Falling at the beginning of Uganda's second rainy season, October is a great time to visit for those who enjoy quieter trails. You'll want to pack along good quality rain gear and be prepared for the unexpected, but in return, you'll enjoy intimate moments with Uganda's incredible wildlife and get to know a more authentic side of the country. Accommodations, flights, and permits will also be less expensive than during the dry season months, making it an ideal time for budget travelers to explore.

Weather

Uganda's second rainy season is in full swing in October, meaning you'll want to be prepared for the occasional heavy downpour and muddy trails. Even so, as it usually only rains for a couple of hours at a time, you can still enjoy some sunshine and plenty of opportunities to view the wildlife. Plus, as temperatures hang between 63ºF (17ºC) and 81ºF (27ºC), embarking on game drives is enjoyable with the proper rain gear. Be prepared for the unexpected when it comes to weather, and October can be a great time to visit Uganda.

Crowds & Costs

Due to variable weather, October is not a popular time to visit Uganda. However, it's a perfect time for budget travelers and those who enjoy exploring quieter trails, as you can find great deals on permits, accommodations, and flights. In addition, booking tours in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is much easier compared to the dry season months, and throughout Uganda, national parks feel much quieter than the previous months. Even so, as some businesses will be closed and there's an overall limited amount of lodges near popular destinations, you'll want to plan and book ahead to avoid missing out.

Where to Go

Despite the rains, there is plenty to explore in Uganda in October. Pack along your high-quality rain gear and embark on a two-week national parks trip to experience the highlights and hidden gems of the country. Most international flights will arrive at Entebbe, a good place to learn about the country's culture and traditions at the Ndere Cultural Center, before trading in the city for a trip to Kidepo National Park. If you are prepared for rain, you'll have a fantastic time searching for elephants, zebras, and lions along the park's many tracks and circuits.

Next, don't miss a trip to Murchison Falls National Park, whose roaring waterfall will be impressive thanks to the rain. Explore the banks of the Nile River, keeping an eye out for buffalo, giraffes, and waterbucks, and take in the vast plains of the Albertine Rift Valley. Another great park to visit in October is Queen Elizabeth, whose rolling green hills will be lush and green. Opt for a water safari along the Kazinga Channel, looking for the park's unique bird species, then head to Kalinzu Central Nature Reserve to track chimpanzees before continuing your journey southwest.

For those up for an adventure, transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. While October isn't traditionally known as a good time to go trekking in search of mountain gorillas, as long as you're prepared for rain and mud, it will still be a remarkable experience. The same applies to Mgahinga National Park, located in the southwestern corner of Uganda. In return for trekking during the off-season, you'll enjoy cheaper permits, and as the mountain gorillas hang out at lower altitudes, you won't have to hike as long to spot them.

What to Do

This month, split your time between game drives, walking safaris, and cultural experiences. Those who enjoy intimate moments with wildlife will especially love visiting national parks. Search for rhinos in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, seek out crocodiles along the Nile River, and learn about Uganda's birdlife at the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary; then, follow the Kasenyi Sector route in Queen Elizabeth National Park to search for lions preying on antelope. Going mountain gorilla trekking in October is possible, but you'll want to be prepared for muddy trails and challenging hiking conditions.

If you're interested in learning more about Uganda's culture and traditions, October is a great time to visit quiet villages that rely on tourism to help keep their trade relevant. At the Ndere Cultural Center, you can watch inspiring folk dances and songs from all over Uganda. At the Batwa Pygmy Cultural Experience, you'll learn the history of the displaced Batwa people and have a chance to listen to their traditional songs and stories. Or, for a more modern take on culture, spend an afternoon at the Buganda Craft Market browsing craft stalls and watching locals socialize.

For those interested in wildlife but prefer not to spend all day trekking, October is an excellent time to visit the lesser-known animal rehabilitation centers. On the island of Ngamba, on Lake Victoria, you'll learn about the impressive work done to help orphaned and rescued chimpanzees. It's also well worth stopping by Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to learn about their rhino reintroduction project and see the rare southern white rhino.
