In September, you can expect warm days and the occasional heavy rainfall. In the north, the second of Uganda's rainy season is already in full swing, and places like Kibale Forest National Park will receive around 6 inches (150 mm) of rain throughout the month. On the other hand, southern Uganda doesn't see the same amount of rain until later in the month, allowing for plenty of pleasant and sunny days. Plus, thanks to Uganda's location on the equator, temperatures remain relatively constant throughout the year, and you can look forward to daytime highs around 81ºF (27ºC) and nighttime lows around 63ºF (17ºC).
Crowds & Costs
September is a great month to visit Uganda if you prefer quieter trails and are traveling on a budget. With the peak tourist season months of June through August come and gone, September sees a dramatic decrease in visitor numbers, and it becomes much easier to book permits and accommodations. In Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, you can often find fantastic deals on mountain gorilla trekking adventures. Similarly, flights in and out of Uganda are also less expensive than in the dry seasons. Keep in mind some businesses will be closed, especially in the north near Kibale Forest National Park.
Where to Go
Take advantage of the south's lesser precipitation and spend your days exploring the region's cities, villages, and national parks. Most international flights arrive at Entebbe International Airport, and the nearby towns of Entebbe and Kampala are perfect for getting your bearings. Explore the capital city's bustling streets, then head west to Queen Elizabeth National Park to go in search of hippos, elephants, and buffalo along the Kazinga Channel. Before leaving the park, stop by the Kalinzu Central Nature Reserve to walk among a tropical forest overflowing with butterflies, monkeys, and sunbirds.
For those looking to get an up-close encounter with the rare mountain gorilla, September is ideal for visiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Rain steadily increases throughout the month, so you'll want to be prepared with high-quality rain gear, but in return, you'll enjoy more affordable tour rates and quieter lodges. The same applies to Mgahinga National Park, Uganda's extreme southwest in the Virunga Mountains, a chain of volcanoes. Here you'll feel like you're the only one around for miles as you trek in search of leopards, golden monkeys, mountain gorillas, and incredible birdlife.
If you plan on traveling to northern Uganda, you'll want to be prepared for the occasional heavy rain shower, but even so, rain rarely lasts all day, and you can enjoy plenty of sunshine between showers. This is particularly true in Murchison Falls National Park, known for its impressive waterfall dropping 148 feet (45 m) through a narrow gorge. Take a day or two to embark on game drives and boat cruises throughout the park, then be sure to stop by Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to see these powerful animals up close.

What to Do
September is a great month to enjoy the incredible national parks, and wildlife Uganda is known for. As the dry season has just passed, animals will still gather around watering holes, and with less vegetation, it's easier to spot and take fantastic photographs of the wildlife. Opt for a seven-day national parks trip and split your time between Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Parks. Embark on a game drive along Kasenyi Sector, known for its competing lion and antelope populations, then take a water safari between Edward and George Lakes looking for great white pelicans and Nile crocodiles.
Once you've arrived in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, trek alongside an expert guide through village gardens and dense forests in search of mountain gorillas. You'll want to have a decent fitness level for this activity, as the bush can be thick and trails muddy. Still, if you're up for it, you'll be rewarded with an interrupted hour watching these incredible animals interact, eat, and play in their natural habitat.
If you're more interested in the culture and traditions of Uganda, you'll find plenty of options for things to do in Uganda in September. Get to know the capital city's rich history with a visit to Kabaka's Palace, the historic seat of the kings of Buganda, and a stop at the Ndere Cultural Center.
