Thanks a lot, Charlotte for the kind words. I'm so happy that all went smoothly and most of all that you feel Cambodia is an underappreciated destination. The country is not well known besides Angkor of course. Thanks to both you and Giulia for travelling with us and hope you can encourage your friends to also visit Cambodia one day!

Our family of four (parents and two adult sons) had an amazing trip to Cambodia thanks to Steve and his team. While we have traveled in Asia before, this was our first time in Cambodia and Steve was enormously helpful in crafting a trip that worked for our family and gave us an incredible introduction to the culture, history and beauty of Cambodia. We will definitely be back! We began with 3 days in Siem Reap where our guide Ms. Sokin shared her in-depth knowledge of the beautiful temples of Angkor Thom, Angkor Wat, Ta Phrom & Banteay Srei. We enjoyed the traditional Apsara dancing one night and had delicious meals there and at Haven restaurant. Having a guide and driver from the moment we landed at the airport made the trip so much easier. We traveled by boat to Battambang, which was a long trip (@7 hours) but definitely worthwhile as we saw the floating villages and beautiful countryside along the way, and the boat was comfortable and a fun experience in itself. We stayed 3 days in Battambang with Ms. Sokin continuing as our guide - highlights included making lunch with the locals, where we harvested local ingredients and prepared delicious local cuisine as well as the bike tour, where we toured a number of local home-industries. Also the bamboo train was a fun experience and the visit to Phnom Sampeau for sunset should not be missed. We then traveled by car to Phnom Penh, stopping along the way to visit a pottery maker and the market, where we tried some local delicacies (some of us more adventurous than others!). We spent 3 days in Phnom Penh. Our guide there Ms. Sreyhouch led us through the beautiful central market, where you can get anything from fresh food to housewares to jewelry. We also visited the Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields, important to understanding the history of the Khmer people. All-in-all, our trip was amazing (but slightly exhausting) - the hotels were all comfortable and accomodating, and we felt that we were really able to see the local experience (particularly in Battambang). The knowledge and support of our guides and driver deepened our experience, allowing us to focus on the experience rather than worrying about whether we were missing something or how we were going to get to the next place. We would highly recommend Steve and his team!

Thanks Claudia for the review. And lots of information to see that the experiences were not just enjoyed, but remembered for a lifetime. We do love Battambang and after 'temple town' (Siem Reap) and the 'big city' (Phnom Penh) it's a great place to experience Cambodian culture, especially in the small villages.
It was great to meet you and the family at Haven in Siem Reap and check all was going well.
Thanks for travelling with Travel Asia a la carte and Kimkim and we very much forward to you returning again.

I cannot speak highly enough about Steve and his exceptional team at Travel Asia A La Carte. Our recent two-week trip to Cambodia exceeded all expectations, thanks to their meticulous planning and unwavering commitment to ensuring our family of four had an unforgettable experience.

From the moment we started discussing our preferences with Steve, it was evident that he and his team were dedicated to tailoring the perfect vacation for us. Our family, including two children, has specific dietary needs, and Travel Asia A La Carte went above and beyond to accommodate them. Every meal was a delightful culinary adventure, showcasing the diverse and delicious flavors of Cambodia.

What truly set this experience apart was our desire for an authentic vacation with a touch of adventure. Steve crafted an itinerary that perfectly balanced cultural immersion with thrilling activities, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Whether exploring ancient temples in Siem Reap, cruising along the Tonle Sap Lake, or engaging in hands-on experiences with local communities, every moment felt like a unique adventure.

The attention to detail in the itinerary was impeccable, ensuring that our family's interests and preferences were seamlessly integrated into each day's activities. The accommodations selected were not only comfortable but also reflected the charm and character of Cambodia.

Steve's team (Horn and Mr Tee in particular) demonstrated unparalleled professionalism and a genuine passion for showcasing the beauty of Cambodia. Their local knowledge, combined with a personalized approach, made us feel like we were in the hands of true experts.

We had a tremendously interesting and enjoyable 2 weeks in Cambodia, thanks to Steve & Travel Asia a la Carte. One of their sample itineraries on kimkim.com mostly matched our wish list and Steve tweaked it to accommodate all our requests. He was extremely responsive, replying to queries within a day and offering good advice, even stopped by our hotel to say hello. The itinerary was wonderfully varied, well-organised, and went off seamlessly, at a packed but manageable pace, with great guides & drivers, nice hotels. Steve & his team took much of the stress out of travelling in a developing country and we have no hesitation in recommending them.
Of the places on our route, of course we were thrilled to finally visit Angkor Wat, Bayon, Preah Khan, Ta Phrom & other stunning sites in Angkor park. But we also really enjoyed the Apopo "HeroRats" demo, Phare Circus, Kampot’s shophouses and Old Cinema Hotel, Kep's seafood market, La Plantation, Santuk silk farm, our beach interval on Koh Rong, the heritage tour of Phnom Penh by tuk-tuk & tablet, and driving through the countryside. The food experiences were a riot, from fried tarantula to stuffed frog, nam ben chok noodles to authentic Portuguese cuisine in Kampot!
Best of all was the lovely Cambodian people we met, their ready smiles, openness and sense of humour, despite their horrific recent history that touched almost every family. The children just melt your heart and their families seem happy to engage. Even the persistent vendors were more friendly than pesky. Our guides were highly professional and delightful personalities, especially Ms Dy and Mr Sothea, who made late changes to cater to our interests and comfort. We felt in safe hands with the drivers, especially Mr Ya and Mr Date (sp?), who always aircon-cooled the car before we got back in – we felt thoroughly pampered. All the hotel staff were smiling & obliging, especially Tina, Chanthy and Sophan (possibly the most attentive waiter we've ever met) at Sohkkak Boutique Resort.

Hotel Reviews
Hotel Old Cinema
Kampot

Absolute gem of a hotel. Our favourite of the trip. Excellent adaptive reuse of a former cinema building and superbly restored, then beautifully decorated. Aesthetically pleasing details in every corner. Even the breakfast was a visual (and tasteful) delight. Lovely little restaurant/bar. Tiny pool inside but open to the sky. Our superior room with king bed had a small balcony facing the indoor garden, very quiet.

Authenticity & Character
See above
Location
In centre of town, surrounded by French colonial-era shophouses. Walkable to many restaurants, open-air food court and the riverfront promenade.
Staff
Jilly was great, happy to answer questions on history of the hotel and developments in Kampot, and book restaurants for us.
Cleanliness & Comfort
High threadcount linen and firm mattress made for best sleep
Penh House
Phnom Penh

Pretty, greenery-filled hotel in great neighbourhood, near the palace. Lovely, small, rooftop pool with city views. Good breakfast spread with enough Western & local options eg eggs cooked to order, noodle soup, and plenty of assorted fruit. Deluxe room tastefully done with effective aircon & little balcony; unfortunately faint odour of drains in bathroom.

Authenticity & Character
Exhibition of photos of Angkor in lobby
Location
Surrounded by small eateries & cool shops
Staff
Helpful in giving directions, booking tuk-tuk
Cleanliness & Comfort
Very clean overall but occasional slight sewage odour in bathroom
Sokkhak Boutique Resort
Siem Reap City

Beautifully appointed 12-room hotel. Small pool but great for cooling off in. Very good breakfast choices, cooked to order. Always smiling, helpful staff who greet you with cold towels & tea every time you return, book remorks, recommend restaurants (albeit in the same Chanrey Tree Group), break up US$100 bills, tell you about Sin Sisamouth. Deluxe room not big, no sofa or chair, but has balcony. Very comfortable firm bed. Powerful aircon and shower pressure.

Authenticity & Character
Elegant local furnishings and decor, lotus flower arrangements, lush landscaping in pool area
Location
10 minutes remork ride from town. But just down the road from Apopo visitor centre
Staff
Tina, who obligingly sprayed my husband's legs with the hotel's lemongrass-scented bug repellent every morning! Sophan, super-attentive waiter who remembered our breakfast preferences and just a very sweet guy. Chanthy who brought cold drinks & cold beer to our room
Cleanliness & Comfort
Mattress was firm and very comfy, as in all the hotels we stayed at
Long Set Resort
Koh Rong

Hotel is on a gorgeous beach - turquoise sea & powdery white sand shaded by palms - but there weren't enough sunbeds for guests (and you're warned not to lie on a towel on the sand due to sandflies). Decent beach-facing restaurant/bar serving fun cocktails and okay food. Resort could use a refresh, eg worn cushions, broken sunbeds, misaligned doors. Room just adequate but well-cooled. Occasional very brief power cuts, not really bothersome. Complimentary use of kayaks & SUPs, snorkel mask & fins, small gym.

Authenticity & Character
Typical mid-range beach hotel in the tropics, not luxe but fine for 3 nights
Location
Only half-hour boat ride from Sihanoukville port. Short stroll from pier.
Staff
Lovely, smiley, obliging staff. Runy served us the most - she's a sweetheart. Louise was great about rebooking our snorkelling trip.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Comfy bed. Good aircon & shower pressure. Toilet paper has to be thrown in a lidded bin, not flushed, but room is cleaned daily.
Vakara Hotel
Kep

Very nice, new, modern hotel, on the edge of a national park and not near Kep town, so better to have your own transport. Our spacious deluxe room (finally with a sofa!) plus large balcony looked down on the huge swimming pool and towards the forested hills of the national park. We saw no other guests (only 7 of the 70 rooms were occupied the night we stayed) so it was extremely quiet. Breakfast, served by the pool, was fine, with 11 set menus to choose from!

Authenticity & Character
Not much character but ideal for families, with chalets on the grounds, kid's playground, big pool and lots of space to run around
Location
Staff
Staff were all smiles and eager to please
Cleanliness & Comfort
Sparkling clean. Comfy firm mattress.

National Museum & Royal Palace
National Museum & Royal Palace
Phnom Penh

Palace: Besides gawking at the ornate architecture, it was interesting to watch the monks & local devotees. Museum: beautiful French-designed, Khmer-style building around a lovely courtyard, worth visiting even if not too interested in the exhibits, which are mostly pre-Angkorian and Angkorian sculpture and carvings - annotated, including those returned to Cambodia by US, UK etc.

Quality of Experience
Both places evocative - the museum evoking French colonial patronage , the palace the reverence for the monarchy especially former King Sihanouk (who was imprisoned there by the Khmer Rouge).
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Mr Bunna was our guide (subbing for Mr Sovann, who was busy that day) - more understandable English than Mr Sovann and very jolly. Tried hard to explain the Sisowath and Norodom royal family trees but we were still confused!

Very interesting and fun stops on the long drive to Siem Reap. Husband ate a fried tarantula for bragging rights. I tried a fried grasshopper - crunchy. Learned a lot about silkworms at Santuk silk farm, first time we saw up close silk threads produced from the cocoon; bought some silk scarves. Enjoyed the boat ride on Tonle Sap to Kompong Khleang and learning about life on the lake, seeing the kids playing in the water (though surprised there's no treatment of sewage at all before it goes into the lake!)

Quality of Experience
The variety of interesting experiences
Food
Tasty, simple lunch at the silk farm

Mr Sovann enthusiastically and earnestly answered our many questions, and we could understand about 60% but didn't want to keep asking him to repeat himself.

Angkor Thom (morning) by remork
Angkor Thom (morning) by remork
Siem Reap

Exhilarating to finally be in Angkor park and then within the Bayon, discerning the differences in enigmatic facial expressions on the towers; having details in the bas reliefs explained by our guide; seeing the actual length of the Terrace of Elephants. The vast size of the park and how green it is dawns on you as you putter around it by remork.

Quality of Experience
The scale, artistry, exactitude (in the 12th century!) similar in jaw-drop factor to Petra (tho that was 1000 years earlier). Apart from the romance of the jungle setting, the sheer engineering involved is mind-boggling & mystifying
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Our guide Ms Dy's excellent commentary really added value to the experience. She took some fantastic photos for us too.
Transport
Fun to tour by remork, iced water provided too.
Afternoon and sunset at Angkor Wat
Afternoon and sunset at Angkor Wat
Siem Reap

We visited Angkor Wat at midday when it was 33C and remember it through a heat haze. There's no shade on the causeway, no breeze around the wat. Ms Dy valiantly kept us going with rest breaks and fanning as we struggled to pay attention to her detailed commentary. We had no energy to clamber to the top level. That said, the site is breathtaking & baffling (how did Khmers build this in the 12th century?!) and the long bas-relief galleries stunning, especially the Churning of the Sea of Milk which I'd long wanted to see. We did not stay for sunset as my husband was exhausted from the heat and wanted to return to the hotel.

Quality of Experience

Guides, Drivers and Staff
Ms Dy’s deep knowledge and patient explanation of the sites, Hindu-Buddhist hybridity, deities, S2 and J7, restoration & conservation with minimal intervention, and much much more.

High-energy dancing, acrobatics, juggling, mime, live music on Khmer instruments and drums - with a creative Cambodian angle ... great fun for a good cause.

Quality of Experience
Wonderful experience of contemporary Cambodia and its talented youngsters
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Ms Dy met us at the venue, showed us all the food stations, took us to our seats under the tent. Mr Ya waited for us with his car till the show ended.
Transport
Appreciated the door-to-door service, particularly as many people were trying to flag tuk-tuks on the street after the show.
Sunset river cruise
Sunset river cruise
Kampot

Relaxing cruise upriver, passing fishing boats heading the other way out to sea. Typical SE Asian rural scenes of mangroves, coconut groves, fish traps, riverside tourist chalets. Very pleasant as the sun sank behind Bokor mtn.

Quality of Experience
Fun to dangle legs over side of wooden boat
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Mr Sothea bought fresh coconuts, beer & snacks for the ride. Friendly boatman, tried to find fireflies for us.
Transport
Kep Crab Market
Kep Crab Market
Kep

Very fun and tasty grazing on bbq squid and deep-fried mini-crabs as Mr Sothea guided us through this seafood market by the beach. Tubs of fresh blue crabs, octopus, squid, shrimp, big pots steaming over wood fires, assorted fresh fish grilled over charcoal - worth coming to Kep for this market, as well as the sun setting behind the surreal giant crab sculpture and seeing local families enjoying themselves on the beach.

Quality of Experience
After a scrumptious meal of crab, fish, shrimp & squid the previous night (less than US$50 for 4 people!) at one of the nearby seafood restaurants, good to see where it all came from.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Mr Sothea always looking out for us. My husband the foodie was tempted to sample the fresh local oysters on display in the market but Sothea sensibly cautioned against it as we had a long drive to Phnom Penh ahead of us.
Transport
Our route included a couple stretches of really bumpy, rutted, dusty roads that Mr Date handled with aplomb
Grand Circuit morning tour
Grand Circuit morning tour
Siem Reap

We visited 3 more sites in Angkor Archaeological Park this morning. Each had its own character and distinctiveness. Especially enjoyed Preah Khan and the WMF interpretation gallery there. The rectangular symmetrical layout, surprising 2-storey columned sanctum, massive garudas, graceful apsaras, made it special. Also loved smaller-scale Ta Som, its well-preserved four-faced towers and unusual devatas. East Mebon was interesting as a brick-built temple to honour an earlier king’s parents and its stone elephants an irresistible photo op. After clambering around its big laterite steps under a blazing sun we were happy to call it a day.

Quality of Experience
Glad we added an extra day in Siem Reap to see these, particularly Preah Khan, in addition to the more famous wats.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Ms Dy again expertly guided us through all 3 sites, explaining what's known about the history, the scholarly theories, pointing out details and distinctive features. In Preah Khan's hall of dancers she demonstrated the hand gestures of the apsara carvings that Khmer dancers still practise today. She also helped us old fogies climb the high uneven steps and led us on easier paths. We could not have asked for a better-informed or more considerate guide.
Transport
Mr Ya waited for us at each stop. Nothing beats an aircon car to ferry you around in the heat!

Fascinating tour of a sustainably-run pepper plantation overlooking a lake, enjoyed the pepper tasting in a beautiful old Khmer house. Learned a lot about pepper cultivation and processing, eg that black, white, green, red peppercorns come from the same stem. Bought all our gifts for home at the shop.

Quality of Experience
Admirable agritourism project. Happy to support a social enterprise that funds a school for its rural community and helps other small farmers
Food
Delicious pepper-themed 3-course lunch at the restaurant, trying the various pepper-infused sauces.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Informative in-house guide who welcomed questions
Transport
Mr Date and his 'golden elephant' safely transported us over potholed dirt roads
Kampot Walking Tour
Kampot Walking Tour
Kampot

Very interesting tour on foot and by car of the French colonial-era shophouses and riverside cinema-turned-Starbucks, Cham Muslim village & mosque, Chinese temple & school, Buddhist monastery, gilded wat & funerary stupas. Many photogenic scenes of monks soliciting alms, entire families on motorbikes, massive durian roundabout, dating couples on the riverside promenade ...

Quality of Experience
Charming laid-back town, less touristed, yet has incredibly good local & European cuisine. At La Tertulia, we had the best Portuguese meals outside of Portugal, so good we ate there both nights.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Mr Sothea would tell us the plan for the day so we knew what to expect, then flexibly adjust it along the way depending on our interests. He thoughtfully or humorously answered every question, took us to his favourite eatery for lunch, escorted us across roads safely, just looked after us like family! He made the trip more local and authentic than if we'd done it ourselves, and was great company throughout.
Transport
Mr Date was at our beck and call, always on time, his car spotless, his cooler full of ice water
Tuol Sleng, Central Market & Killing Fields in the afternoon
Tuol Sleng, Central Market & Killing Fields in the afternoon
Phnom Penh

Central Market was worth visiting even though we're not avid shoppers. The building is humongous and houses scores of stalls selling everything, from gems to galangal, plus cubicles where you can get a massage, hair wash, nail varnish. The food stalls section was fun; we snacked on grilled squid there, would've tried other stuff that looked interesting if we knew what it was (our guide didn't come in with us). Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and killing fields were even grimmer than anticipated, but well organised with a set route (no guide necessary) and descriptive boards in English. Glad we dressed appropriately.

Quality of Experience
S21 heightens appreciation of the Cambodian recovery and resilience of its long-suffering people, why they'd rather put up with a dynastic autocracy than oppose it.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Guide could accompany guests into Central Market to help with translation & questions, instead of waiting outside.

Apopo HeroRats, Banteay Srei, Banteay Samre, Noodle Village, & Ta Phrom
Siem Reap

At our request to avoid heat exhaustion, Steve and Dy rejigged the schedule: we visited Apopo and Ta Phrom in the morning, returned to hotel 12-2pm, went out again at 2pm for late lunch and visit to Banteay Srei, skipping Banteay Samre. This was perfect and we were able to enjoy the temple visits much more. Apopo HeroRats: must-do, fluently narrated by guides who know their stuff. The landmine-detecting demo was fascinating and HeroRats so cute; we "adopted" one for a year for US$100 - an eminently worthy cause. Ta Phrom: very atmospheric to wander around, even with people lining up to take the iconic photo of tree roots gripping the ruins. Ms Dy skillfully manoeuvred us into strategic spots and snapped some great pictures. Interesting to learn about the hollow spong trees. Noodle village: deliciously different nam ben chok rice noodles, eaten with 2 sauces & fresh veggies. Also tried stuffed frog at a roadside stall in Pradak village and almost tried whole roast pig-on-a-spit but it was still roasting. Banteay Srei: must-see, exquisite carvings in dusky pink sandstone, well preserved. A bridal couple in traditional costume were taking photos there, which added to the ambience. The drive there through villages & countryside was interesting too, stopped to buy palm sugar.

Quality of Experience
We loved the variety of experiences interspersed between temple visits
Food
Loved the nam ben chok noodles. Stuffed frog with tamarind paste was a first for us - yummy.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Ms Dy was an outstanding guide, flexible, open, chatty, answering questions fully, diligently pointing out details, repeatedly explaining till we got it. We learned a lot from her. Also a born story-teller, with an extraordinary family history of survival and achievement. With our careful driver Mr Ya we felt we were in responsible hands. He was a sweetie too.
Transport
Mr Ya was unfailingly punctual, his car comfortable and clean.

Thank you Debbie, David & Barb for travelling with us in Cambodia and taking the time to share these glowing comments.
The quality of the tour guide is for me the most important part of a trip. It doesn't matter how well I plan tours to match guest requirements if the guide does not deliver the essence of the itinerary and services. It's wonderful to hear Sreylen and Sukin did such great jobs and I will thank them again.
Please share Cambodia's magic with your friends and encourage them to visit us.

Thanks for travelling with Kimkim/Travel Asia a la carte in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.

Thanks for travelling with us in Cambodia, and also for your very sweet words. I'm glad you wanted to stay longer! Please come again and see more of the country.
I agree, Phum Baitang is a lovely place to stay and get a feel for the Cambodian countryside. And the lodges are wonderful.
It was also great to catch up with you during the market visit before the cookery class. Please send my regards to Joe.

It seemed daunting to plan our trip to Cambodia as I had to ascertain a hotel in the city centre, local transport, tickets to shows and temple entries and most importantly language and food options. But after I found Kimkim and Steve, our tour planner, the holiday came together so beautifully and without hassles. Steve gave us a customised itinerary to suit our interest of having an active holiday closer to nature and soaking in the culture and history of Cambodia. Mr Arn, our Cambodian tour guide and child survivor of the infamous Khmer Rouge regime, shared personal experiences and stories which gave us a chance to be engaged and immersed in the Cambodian life.
Some of our most memorable experiences were the cycling trip around the temples, the trek on the Kabal Spean mountain, the APOPOS land mining rats and Phare circus. Each of these had been curated by Steve after taking inputs from me.
All in all, this was an experience we will never forget as we bonded as a family while soaking in the Cambodian way of life.

Steve managed to organize a short family trip for us down to Cambodia that was a trip of a lifetime. He was able to answer questions from each family member, at all times of the day, helping us prepare for the trip (from currency, to clothing, to flight recommendations). While we were there, he always made sure we were well taken care of, checking in on us and even went above to help with delayed baggage.
Regarding the trip itself, he managed to find a way for us to learn about the Cambodian history (the Khmer Rouge & S21 were very humbling to learn about), experience and understand the Cambodian culture today (the cyclo tour was such a fun experience), and enjoy the beautiful scenery around the Angkorian temples.
I appreciated that most of what we did, involved supporting the locals. Be it via Jaan Bai (delicious food), the Phare Ponleu Selpak (those kids had SO MUCH POSITIVE ENERGY), or even Tonle Sap (seeing the entire community drying the fish was really fascinating).
Sarrun as our guide was also amazing. Cambodia has very little English speaking, and he was able to help teach us the basics of Khmer language, help us on the day trips (reserving a spot for us to see the bats, buy us the local hacky sacks that we loved seeing people play with, communicate with the driver(s), etc). He also was great at helping us understand how much to expect for a TukTuk ride for our free nights, and how safe it would be during the night.
One thing to mention, if you do not know humidity, be prepared for lots of humid days, and pack accordingly!

Going at sunset instead of midday was the best decision made (in terms of weather and the scenery). The sunset was beautiful, and I think it would be even more beautiful during wet season, with the rice paddies being more green. However, the only time I felt bombarded / guilted on this entire trip was at the shops at the end of the ride. You go for about 10min, then you get off and there are a couple little shops. The kids all know how to say they're hungry and are poor, though none look malnourished. The parents also try to push that on you. And the only way for you to leave is back on the train, but the train driver is related to the shop owners, so they are in no rush. This probably would be the first thing I would remove if I were to re-do this trip.

This is one of the areas, that highlights how helpful a guide is. Sarrun helped us get a truck transportation up the hill. Even though we are a fit family, even we would not be able to walk the mountain in the heat. Also, having a spot saved for us at the bottom to see the bats leave was perfect. This was the first spot we saw the monkeys in Cambodia, and it was a humbling experience understanding the history of what became of the cave during the Khmer Rouge.

Even if they did a little mess up, they wanted to do it again and everyone (including other cast members) would always cheer them on. It is only an hour, but it was really such a positive experience. It was cool to go to the market, get some of the ingredients, then actually cook those ingredients. The portion sizes are massive, and don't forget with every meal, you will get a massive bowl of rice. Very little english is known, so having a bit of french and the very basics of Khmer helped. The food was delicious, and it was really cool to actually learn to cook the Cambodian way (from cleaning the bananna leaves for the fish amok to mortar & pestle the spices to using the clay pot stove we saw in Ondong Roussey). It was such an amazing experience, and great to then taste our feast at the end. To top it all off, we were allowed to walk the gardens and they were so accomodating. Walking around Angkor Wat afterwards was still beautiful, but I enjoyed Angkor Thom, Ta Phrom, Banteay Kdei, and Pre Rup more.

Hi Shayla,
Thanks for taking the time to share such detailed comments. It's really helpful.
A couple of points:
Angkor Wat - I was there a few days ago for sunrise. Perhaps 500-800 people total. However, it was relatively quiet and I felt still manageable. However, we are expecting Asian tour groups, especially Chinese, to return before too long. Angkor Wat - I was there a few days ago for sunrise. Perhaps 500-800 people total. However, it was relatively quiet and I felt still manageable. However, we are expecting Asian tour groups, especially Chinese, to return before too long. So its going to get a lot busier, and we will probably stop offering sunrise at Angkor Wat to guests, as we did pre-Covid when things were just too busy.
Bamboo train - I haven't visited for a year or more now. Sorry, to hear the families there are being a bit persistent in trying to sell t-shirts etc. They are not rich, but also not poor, and make money from growing crops in the fields. We will ask our guides to be a bit more insistent on them not going over the top with their selling. The ride is still beautiful, and yes, early morning/late afternoon is best as there is no shelter from the sun whilst on the bamboo train.

I'm glad you had a little 'up to you' time to see other temples such as Banyeau Kdei. There are so many more you could explore but others may just get 'templed out'. My personal favourite is Preah Khan, which is a quieter version of Ta Phrom.

Thanks again for travelling with us, and also for all the feedback when I will reread again.
Best regards,
Steve.

Mr Sarun was responsive and more often proactive. For example, when we were purchasing souvenirs he was right with us interacting with the seller and us to make sure we understood the cost.

Sarun taught us key Khmer phrases such as, Sour Sdei for Hello, Orkun Chroeun for Thankyou. Often when we used these phrases the Khmer people asked if we knew their language. These phrases helped us feel connected to the community.

Our driver, Thaulm (please correct spelling), was welcoming and helpful. He always had the tour bus ready for us and greeted us at the door.

One suggestion, build a bit more down time into the schedule in Phonm Penh while the day time market is open. And, allow for some more down time in the morning or earlier in the evening while in Battambang. My husband and I like to take our time walking around the city, eating street food and exploring local shops/markets. We finally got this time in Siem Reap on the afternoon of our last day and the extra day we added to our trip. We would have liked some more down time (not in the heat of the day) to explore Battambang and Phonm Penh.

It may have been nice to have at least one brighter light in our room. And, the pamphlet in our room said that we could get coffee anytime of day. I was waking up at about 4am to finish edits to an academic journal article that is being published and like coffee while I write. Since our host and hostess have a full day of work from about 6:30am until about 9:00/10:00pm, it may be nice to have a French Press coffee pot with some ground coffee in our room to substitute for the times when the kitchen is closed. Please know the food we had here was some of the best for the entire trip.

Glad we rode bikes. If it’s possible to start this bike outing an hour or 30 minutes earlier it would have helped me. My skin is very light and there have been times that heat and sun exhaust me. I did fine. But, decided to stay indoors for the rest of the day and part of the next morning to make sure I didn’t have heat exhaustion. I got a Khmer massage at Maisons Wat Kor and loved it!

I imagine all of us on this family trip do not all agree about the pace of the days. I speak for myself and know that at least one other person also sat out of activities on this evening after the bike outing. Some family members wanted to have the day packed full of events. So, it’s a challenge to provide feedback that seems reasonable based on what I experienced and what the family members booked with KimKim. Having said that, it is my sentiment that we did too much each day. But, other family members wanted to have each minute of everyday packed with scheduled activities. The down time around the pool seemed to be another schedule activity. Whereas I prefer a mix and better balance of planned events and open time to experience the local environment. My point, I am sharing my feedback and know that my feedback on this item may not represent feedback from the others on this family trip.

I'm glad our guide made you feel part of the community, and also you got to learn a little Khmer and practice it. It's always guaranteed to generate a smile from the lovely Cambodian people!
Thanks also for sharing the comments about the tour programme and down time. It's very hard to gauge when planning a trip as so many guests are trying to cram as much into their itinerary as possible and don't want to 'waste a second'. If you plan your next trip with Kimkim please do share such info in advance so the expert can take that into account and maybe add in half a day free in suitable locations. Anyhow, I'm glad you had a more relaxing time in Siem Reap and had a bit of rest there. Your tour was private and I hope the guide was as flexible as possible with the schedule.
It was also nice to meet you at the hotel in Siem Reap and learn the reason for the family of 8 coming together and arranging the visit to Cambodia. As I mentioned, it's hard in busy lifestyles to get time to travel together so I'm very glad it all worked out.
Thanks again for travelling with Travel Asia a la carte and Kimkim and hope to see you again.
Best regards from Siem Reap,
Steve.

I hope that on my next trip (wherever in the world that might be), I have another guide like Chu and his team at Absolute Tours in Siem Reap. We were amazed by his knowledge and his passion for sharing and teaching. While many guides seem to tick the box, Chu was ready to take us beyond the well-worn tourist trails Instagram spots and to show us the rarely visited temples and vistas. For these kinds of experiences, we were deeply grateful. Touring Southeast Asian countries during the lunar holidays can certainly provided some challenges, but none so great that I couldn't recommend going at this time of year. So while there were some hiccups with communication along the way, our two week trip ultimately will be remembered for the stunning views and the amazing experiences and the lovely people we met in these two very unique countries.

Hotel Reviews
Hidden Charm Ninh Binh
Ninh Thang, Hoa Lu, Ninh Binh

This is a nice place to stay for a night, but it really leaves you feeling uninspired and isn't remarkable for either very good or very bad reason. While clean and safe, Hidden Charm ultimately lacks any real character. By trying not to offend, it's decor and atmosphere feel very sterile and impersonal. On the contrary the staff were all wonderful and incredibly accommodating even going to far as to provide us another room at a discounted rate. The breakfast was varied and had something for everyone. The walk into town was short and easy and also felt safe. Hidden Charm had neither extreme highs nor extreme lows, and sometimes that exactly what you want in a travel hotel.

Authenticity & Character
If you want to remember everything about your trip to Ninh Binh, this isn't the hotel for you. We had difficulty recalling what it exactly looked like, which could be good thing ultimately as the hotel should not be the highlight of the trip.
Location
Easy and safe walk in to town.
Staff
Like all the hotels we stayed at in Vietnam, the service was five-star. Very grateful to the front desk for not only accommodating us with another room, but also not taking advantage of our request.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The grout and tiles in the bathrooms could be cleaned or reapplied, but otherwise this was a clean and modern hotel.
Hôtel Perle d’Orient Cat Ba

Parts of this hotel reminded me of an Agatha Christie novel. The Hotel Perle is a gorgeous hotel at the end of a long road from town with stunning views, a hidden path to another beach, and a lobby and bar right out of the 1920's. The food was amazing, the atmosphere was inviting and warm, and the amenities like the spa and gym are top-notch. The two private beaches are just that, private. They are clean and sunlit and perfect for all types of travelers. Wish we could have stayed longer. We will certainly be back. Highest recommendation.

Authenticity & Character
This places oozes with charm and prestige.
Location
It's a half mile walk to town on a very safe and picturesque road. However some guests might not feel comfortable walking that far at night. We had no problems at all and actually enjoyed the stroll on both nights we were there.
Staff
The front desk staff was friendly and inviting and made us feel right at home. The hotel was short staffed because of the Lunar New Year, but we never knew it because the service was seamless.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The rooms felt new and are immaculately maintained.
Era Cruises
Hai Ba Trung Dist., Hanoi

While the boat staff was friendly and welcoming, the cruise itself lacked any real personality or excitement. Guests are left mostly to take in the views of the stunning bay (although floating debris and trash is a real detraction). The activities offered feel half hearted and mostly done so the boat can say the offered them. There is a real lack of earnestness in this. The fishing for squid is a great example. It was not squid season, nor were we in a spot where you'd normally catch squid, but they gave us the poles and told us to try anyway. While this type of cruise might appeal to some, it wasn't for us and so I can't recommend it.

Authenticity & Character
It felt like the boat was going through the motions of another cruise. It felt very uninspired.
Location
The views are commanding and unique to this part of the world. Unfortunately the presence of debris and garbage in the water is such that it can't be ignored.
Staff
Mr. Lee brought tons of energy and was very friendly and likable. He carried the cruise by himself.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Clean, but older and well-used interiors. You don't go on a cruise to watch television, but I found it interesting that none of the movies played all the way through. I have no idea if there were or not, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were pirated (no pun intended).
La Siesta Hoi An Resort & Spa
Quảng Nam

A serene and luxurious place to stay. The staff was amazing, the rooms were immaculate, and the food was delicious. Would love to stay here again.

Authenticity & Character
This isn't a hotel, it's a resort, and it's a very good one at that.
Location
A bit far from the main area of town, but that's also what gives it its peace and quiet. Not a far walk, but far enough if the sun is out.
Staff
The staff were amazing. They allowed us an early check-in and a late check-out. The front desk learned our names and greeted us warmly every time we were in the lobby.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Our rooms were spotless and plush. The wifi was strong and fast and the hot water lasted even after the longest of showers after epic bike rides in the cold rain. I can't say enough good about how comfortable this place was to stay.
Hotel Somadevi Angkor Resort & Spa

After having such incredible experiences at our other hotels on this trip, this was a major let down. The rooms and beds were old and well worn. My room on the fourth floor had an ant infestation that I was only aware of after having a cup of tea in my room. The doors didn't latch properly and needed slamming which created it's own kind of disturbance as well. The location is central and walking to some parts of town is easy, but rides are required for any place really worth going. The staff was friendly but distant. Kind, but not really caring. The breakfast was also far weaker than any other place we stayed. Cold food that was supposed to be hot, dry tasteless breads and weak tea and coffee (you could buy a stronger brewed cup) made this feel more like a motel than a hotel. The pool was nice, but it wasn't anything special. While we felt both safe here and could endure the minor physical problems and blemishes this is not a hotel (and definitely not a resort) that I can recommend or would travel to again.

Authenticity & Character
I don't think the hotel was really trying to be authentic unless heavily worn and dated is an authentic look. Lots of stains on floors and walls, mismatched paint, loose woodwork, and basic furniture in the bedrooms told the story of a hotel where no one really cared about maintenance or appearance.
Location
The location was probably the best part about this place. Easy to bike from here around the city and to the temples. Easy walk to restaurants and Pub Street. I'm not entirely sure it was 100% safe to walk from there late at night, but it was only about 800m.
Staff
The mainly kept to themselves behind the desk in the lobby. No doormen, bellhops, or concierge offering assistance of any kind.
Cleanliness & Comfort
I think the hotel covers the basics like changing sheets and towels, but there was little evidence of much else. Years of dirt and grime build up certainly point to the contrary.
La Siesta Hoi An Resort & Spa
Quảng Nam

You cannot beat this location! However, in being walking distance to nearly everything, you also end up with lots of noise. Some of this is city noise and some of it is from the hotel, but regardless, if you're a very light sleeper, there might be a better option. The breakfast was superb and the wifi was strong through out the property. There was a small gym, but it was dated. What really sets this place apart though is it's location. While not affiliated with the hotel, the Blue Butterfly restaurant across the street was also delicious and offered generous servings.

Authenticity & Character
La Siesta provides a very western feel without the chain atmosphere. The lobby and restaurant were warm and welcoming, but parts of the building felt dated but not quite historic.
Location
Located on a safe and quieter street, you cannot find a hotel better situated than this. A ten minute walk from the front door got you just about everywhere in the old city. We also felt very safe walking around from the hotel at night.
Staff
The front desk went above and beyond in helping us with maps, recommendations, and reservations. The changed money for us and even mailed postcards for me. Top-tier service.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The rooms were clean, but decorations and styling were dated. The mattresses in our rooms were firm, but had evidence of use in the middle. There were usb outlets beside the beds which was nice. The real difference between La Siesta and a five-star hotel is the noise. Doors opening and closing, people talking in the hallways passing by your room made me wonder if I had left the door ajar. City noise from outside the window isn't something the hotel can control, but the car horns and music from passing traffic was also noticeable while trying to fall asleep.

Ninh Binh - Trang An - Hoa Lu - Tam Coc
Ninh Binh

After cycling for a couple hours, we stopped for a late lunch at a tourist dive. It was fine. Nothing special. It might have been authentic, but it was mass produce for tour buses. We walked around town on our own and found a great little hostel by the river which had bonfires set up and bar. That was the coziest part of our stay here. The next day we took a 45 minute boat ride first thing which was peaceful and uncrowded. It was nice until the boat operator stopped us in the middle of the river and tried to sell us the goods in her bag. We floated there for five minutes and kindly and politely said "no thank you" until she gave up and started rowing again. It was a major turnoff and we felt pressured to buy since her rowing was the only way for us to get to dry land. The ride through the cave and the peacefulness of the morning wasn't ruined, but it did spoil the moment prematurely.

Quality of Experience
Food
There has to be more options than the two places we ate. The first stop for lunch was strictly a tourist stop. The second spot for lunch on day three was an old bus stop. Neither seemed like a place they took the idea of food very seriously.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Fouck was our guide and he was personable and friendly. I could tell he really wanted to help us enjoy ourselves, but both he and our driver were smoking a lot and for two athletes, that's hard for us to want to be around. Also with the Lunar New Year on the horizon, I could tell they both wanted to get home, so we finished our riding day four hours early which I think they appreciated, but still left us feeling underwhelmed. I think asking clients if they mind smoking is a great first step rather than assuming they don't. Getting into the van after a ride and having our bags and clothes smell like smoke definitely was off-putting.
Transport
The van was spacious and comfortable and our driver was safe and courteous. The bikes were too small for our size (1.88m and 1.9m) and they had several mechanical problems along the way. We were able to compensate, but it wasn't a fun of an experience as I thought it might otherwise be because of the small and unreliable nature of the bikes.

Our driver from the hotel to the pier left us on the dock with no instructions. Two hours passed before a boat came to pick us up. We asked several other boat skippers if they were our ride and they made calls to the Era on our behalf. Finally I called Alex who was able to get in touch with the boat. Mr. Lee called me and said 20 minutes. 30 minutes later he called again and said 20 minutes. We were very lucky the day was overcast and hot and sunny or raining as there was no shelter on the pier.

Quality of Experience
It was relaxing and peaceful. They should focus on that strength and not try to offer activities only to offer them. If you're going to give guests a chance to fish, they should actually be fishing, not just waving a pole in the water hoping to hook something other than trash.
Food

Mr. Lee was doing the best he could and I appreciate his sincere and straightforward nature. He brought as much energy as he could, it didn't go unnoticed.
Transport
Being left waiting on the pier is not a great start. If the boat is to pick us up at 11:30, and we leave our hotel and are on time, there shouldn't be a two hour delay in getting picked up. I felt bad for the other guests too as lunch wasn't served until we had arrived.

Exploring the old town and riding up the coast was a nice change to the tourist areas we had been seeing. Stopping by the inlaid wood artisans was nice although they pressured us to buy their art, we politely declined. The boat ride would have been nicer but the weather didn't cooperate which wasn't anyone's fault, just bad luck. However the highlight of this day was definitely the cooking class with Hu. The family owned restaurant was exactly the type of experience we were looking for. Hu was funny and quick and a great teacher. He knew the shortcuts and bike trails which took us off the main roads and to the lesser known temples and ruins. His knowledge was excellent and his energy was contagious which helps when you leave the hotel at 5AM for the sunrise at Angkor Wat. The restaurant we stopped at for lunch provided generous serving sizes of delicious food. Contrary to the experiences we had in Vietnam, we felt like the food portions were made for us, not for the masses. I'd eat here again.

A chance to try street food! My travel partner ate a fried tarantula and kind of enjoyed it! It was great to get away from the tourist lines and experience the city that the locals know.

The Landmine Museum is a MUST DO! To understand history, you must look at the parts that aren't as easy to digest and the museum does just that. Mr. Akira is a fantastic storyteller and we spent close to an hour with him learning about his life and mission.

Hi Kelsey,
Thanks for the glowing review! It was great to meet you and Jon during the honeymoon trip.
Lovely to hear all went so well and you appreciated the guide, hotel, biking through the Angkor complex etc etc! Keep up the beautiful Instagram work which I enjoyed watching. Not just Cambodia, but also Vietnam and Thailand!
Hope you can make it back one day and show you more of Cambodia.
Steve.
