This Peru trip for me was unforgettable. This is my first time using KimKim as well as Andean travels and everything was planned to perfection. From the suggestions made by Liz Karen to Lisabeth being very responsive to any needs that arose while I was in Peru, it was a very much stress free trip. All the drivers and tour leaders were amazing, knowledgable and timely. I had to change my plans multiple time and Liz was so accommodating to making any changes needed. Thank you so much for planning a great trip for me.

Palacio del Inka Cusco

This is a top notch hotel, in an amazing building, feels like a museum - staff is amazing and always there when you need anything. The family suite was great for us (king + 2 doubles) - breakfast was the best part of the stay - great choices from all around the world + a la carte menu. The courtyards were a nice touch and the bar for sports super fun for watching the Champions league, spa really nice and relaxing after the flight and altitude readjustment.

This was our favorite hotel the entire trip - small but so quaint and in the middle of a botanical garden, sort of - the flora in the hotel was just spectacular. The rooms were just right with great shutters to get a great night sleep. The location, first a bit odd in the train station, but on second thought perfect to get on the train to MP and back to pick up bags. Staff, amazing and super helpful.

Great location to the pier to get to the islands. Staff very friendly, especially in the bar and restaurant. A bit chilly in the common areas but I think that is the nature of the hotel. The views from the patios in the morning were truly exceptional. Getting to the restaurant in the early am is a bit cold (different buildings and through outside) but not a big deal. Appreciated the games by the fireplace!

This was by far the best, felt authentic (while clearly targeted for tourism to support the islanders) - Jose, our guide, was so knowledgeable, proud and ready to share. The lunch on Taquiles was the best fish we had in Peru and the view could be confused with Positano in Italy. The Uros islanders interactions were fun and real - and something we truly enjoyed.

Amazing end of our trip - while we thought we ate it all, Carlos sure had some aces in his sleeve. The food and the setting in the restaurants (Limara and the one by the ruins) were true gems, as was the market - we were worried we are not going to be able to eat anymore as the tasting menu was a lot of food. Really loved the variety, the interaction - make your own ceviche and the pisco sour demonstration and tasting. Truly well done - and we got to see a bit of Lima too!

Fabulous hotel! A little walk from the centre but the advantage was that it was very peaceful. Staff were very nice and we would have to give a special thank you to Juan in the bar/restaurant. He was one of the most helpful members of staff we came across during our 6 week South American adventure! Our room was really lovely. Very comfortable bed, good shower, lots of space for our belongings, no noise from neighbouring rooms, stutters made it nice and dark at night and we really slept well. Lunch and dinner in the restaurant were excellent and great value. Our experience at breakfast was a little haphazard but I think it was down to the inexperience of the staff and the language barrier. Food quality was not a problem, just trying to communicate simple needs like toast and butter!

Wow! This was one tough climb! I knew it was going to be a challenge, but nothing can quite prepare you for the ascent over the first few hours. Glad I did it for the sense of achievement, but it’s definitely something people need to give serious thought to before signing up for it! For me, this was the only way to see the view from the Sun Gate ( I now know it’s possible to do this again from Machu Picchu site) and to be honest, the view of the site was not as mind blowing as I had expected. It was so sunny and so far away that I couldn’t really appreciate it. If I had the choice now, I would have skipped the 1 Day Trail and just walked to the Sun Gate from Machu Picchu.

Martina was awesome and planned the trip well however the execution of the trip lacked the quality we expected from Kim Kim.

Language was a big issue in Peru. We had an hard time understanding the English speaking guides. Many drivers who came to pick us up didn’t speak a word of English which was also very challenging. The guide in Lima lacked energy and was not engaging. She took us to a restaurant that lacked hygiene and we ended up not eating. We took a bus from Lima to Nasca but guide told us journey was 4 hours rather than 7 and we got off on wrong stop. Thank god someone spoke English and asked us to get back on bus. I specifically requested a meal in Nasca but when we checked into the hotel the front desk had no clue about our meal and to top it all they didn’t speak English. So 11 pm in the night after 7 hours of bus we were out on street looking for food in a town where we didn’t understand the language.
Cusco excursions were amazing and our guide Will was stellar. Hotel in Cusco smelled like someone had defecated in the room but hotel staff was unable to identify the issue (entered room multiple times). Amazon trip was the most memorable for us but on our way back Lima airport was shutdown - nothing that tour guide can control however every time we called them they didn’t answer rather preferred to communicate via WhatsApp messages. That was strange... I wish they would pick up our calls given we were stuck in Cusco and language was a huge barrier for us. I do want to point out that texting via WhatsApp was prompt.

All in all I feel for the money we paid, guides could be better and definitely hotel should have been top notch - they weren’t. The airport issue took all the pleasure out of the vacation and the fact that tour guide was not willing to talk rather chat only added to frustration.

Not everybody in Peru speaks English and usually our drivers don't. I am sorry if this was not clear. This is why we always work with professional English-speaking guides in the different destinations.

All the hotels that I selected for your stay were good 3-star hotels and we work with them regularly. I will pass on your comments to the hotel in Cusco. Unfortunately you haven't informed us about the bad smell, we would have asked the hotel to change your room right away.

In regards to communication on the last day in regards to the electricity problem at Lima airport, our team was very busy taking care of all our clients that could not leave or could not arrive in Lima. We did our utmost to reply to your messages right away, to find another airline for you and reschedule your flight (even if this flight also was delayed and didn't work out).

I am confident that once settled in again, you will mainly remember the good moments and the great family time that you had all together.

Warm regards,
Martina

We could not be happier with the service we received. From the start, Nicholas was attentive and communicative, providing valuable feedback as we built our itinerary. We had lots of ideas of what we wanted to do, and he helped us organize them in such a way that maximized both our experiences and our time, while offering suggestions that complimented our goals. Where we had pre-booked travel and experiences, Nicholas seamlessly integrated them into our itinerary. And for the bookings we made with him, where possible, upgrades were offered that significantly enhanced our trip. Our itinerary was clearly presented, with the names and phone numbers of our guides to facilitate our communication. Moreover, the support we received from Nicholas while in Peru was immediate and effective.

Our guides, Nancy, Cesar, and Antonio, were always timely, always engaging, and they were all empowered to help us refine our itinerary further, based upon their own knowledge and experience, and our requests. That level of care and commitment was a true showing of their interest in us, and of their personal pride, both in their roles as guides, and as representatives of their respective cities. Our drivers were personable and safe, as well.

In sum, KimKim was a phenomenal resource to help us put together a memorable Peru experience!

Palacio Manco Capac by Ananay
Cusco

A historic hotel situated twenty minutes (by foot) from the historic center of Cusco. Our room was very nice and comfortable, however, wifi was extremely poor in the room. It was stronger elsewhere in the hotel. We did not have enough time to make use of the restaurant for any meals, yet, the hotel did put together breakfast boxes for our early morning departure, and they were amply sufficient.

Authenticity & Character
The hotel is in a historic building, and care has been given to maintain that authenticity.
Location
Situated at the top of the hill, views from the hotel are amazing! The walk (downhill) to the historic center of Cusco is easy. The walk back (uphill) to the hotel is a bit tougher!
Staff
All the staff we interacted with were friendly and helpful.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Our room was clean and cozy. The only complaint was the wifi - which hardly worked in our room. The signal was better elsewhere in the hotel.

This is a popular hotel in the Colca Canyon. We booked it particularly for the hot springs and the spa, both of which were nice, the hot springs more so than the spa. The restaurant is very good, serving a full breakfast and offering local dishes for dinner. The staff were welcoming and helpful.

Authenticity & Character
The location of the hotel is its chief selling point. While comfortable, the rooms are not particularly memorable.
Location
Situated right next to the river, the hotel is scenic. The hot springs are also situated close to the river, which makes a dramatic backdrop for your time there. You are far away from any other property or facility, though.

We were able to find our guide easily, and he helped us with our transfer to our hotel. Along the way, he shared some thoughts about Lima, and its surrounding neighborhoods, all of which were useful. He pointed out various places of interest, and restaurant types that we could consider. He also gave us tips on how our process would go when we returned to Lima airport, to transfer from our domestic flight to our international flight, as we would be doing that on our own.

Our guide, Nancy, was awesome! She was punctual, friendly and engaging. More to the point, she figured out very quickly what we wanted to see and experience, and how we wanted to go about doing it. As such, she made on-the-fly adjustments that had us walking through the neighborhoods instead of driving through them, while also showing us to more off-the-path sites and sights, that were better aligned with our interests.

Quality of Experience

Nancy did a great job of guiding us, and of hosting us. She was adaptive to our requests and to our general method of exploration, ditching our transport for more of a walking tour, with the points of interest and experiences more in line with our personal preferences, as opposed to a set menu of sights.

We wanted to get our hands dirty with the local community, and this experience got us to do just that. From working with textiles to digging up crops, to dancing and sharing a lunch, this was an immersive, personal experience that was really impactful. Pisac is a large archeological site, and it would take more than a day to explore it all. However, our specific hike was tailed to our wants, and we spent a few hours on a 4km trail that got us to incredible vistas and historic sites that were well explained by our guide.

This was an impactful experience. Our guide was an able translator for us, but there wasn't much that needed to be spoken, rather, the engagement was in action. We worked with textiles. We worked with farming equipment. We shared a lunch. We danced together. If that's your thing, this is a great experience. Pisac is more of a hike, which is what we wanted, and our guide did a great job of explaining the historic significance of the site.
Food
Our lunch was very good! Sourced locally it was a tasty showcase of the community.

Ollantaytambo Village and Inca Site Exploration. Pinkulluna Hike
Peru

Olly (for short) is a small town that offers up a lot of sights and experiences. Situated about halfway between Cusco and Machu Picchu, and a stop on the railway between the two, it is easily accessible. There are serval Inca sights to see, and I appreciated getting to ones that were on and off the main tourist circuit. The town itself is very scenic, with a lively marketplace and historic center.

Quality of Experience
 Pachamanca: Traditional Andean Underground Cooking
Pachamanca: Traditional Andean Underground Cooking
Sacred Valley

The cooking method, and explanation, are good experiences. And the lunch that follows is very good! This is a more commercial enterprise and less personal than I would have preferred. There was a missed opportunity for this to be more inclusive with a tour of the farm (not just the distillery and beanery that were targeted for sales) and to have more interactions with the staff.

Quality of Experience
More commercial than interpersonal. Some missed opportunities for this to be a more engaging and fulfilling experience.
Food
Lunch is really good!
Maras Salt Ponds
Maras Salt Ponds
Sacred Valley

The salt ponds are a wondrous sight. The scale of the development is impressive, and the photography opportunities here are vast, with different colors and elevations to point your camera at. However, that's all this is - a view of some salt ponds.

Quality of Experience
The scale of this place is impressive, and you have an opportunity to point your camera at a stunning backdrop of colors and elevations and textures.
Moray Terraces
Moray Terraces
Peru

Like the salt ponds, this is a limited experience. The history of the place is fascinating, and the photography opportunities are good (albeit less so here than at the salt ponds). If you are already in the Sacred Valley, this is a worthwhile stop. But if you are only in Cusco, I wouldn't make the trek to visit these exclusively.

Quality of Experience
A historic Inca ruin with some interesting history, and a cool photo stop. But not much more.
From {{start_location}} to {{end_location}} via Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve
From {{start_location}} to {{end_location}} via Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve
Peru

The National Reserve is vast, and unspeakably beautiful. I would say the same of the Sacred Valley as well, but the landscapes here are totally distinct, with different wildlife and vegetation. You can take photos and videos endlessly here, and still fail to capture the magnitude of the area. If you're driving from Arequipa to the Colca Canyon this is a super worthwhile route to take.

Quality of Experience
Truly a wondrous landscape to drive through and make photo stops in. You can't venture far off the road as it is a protected area, but being able to make frequent stops and just "take it all in" is very cool.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Our guide, Antonio, clearly loves this place, and he was eager to point out various wildlife and vegetation unique to the park. Also, he knew the best photo stops, yet was more than willing to accommodate our own requests to make stops to take in the sights.
Transport
Our driver, Gonzalo, was awesome. The road through the park is a two-lane highway, chock full of cars and buses and trucks. He navigated both the road and the traffic supremely well, and didn't get frustrated when we made stops, or asked for them.
Hike to Chimpa Fortress
Hike to Chimpa Fortress
Colca Canyon

Getting to the starting point for the hike is an adventure in and of itself. It is in the middle of nowhere, in what's already the middle of nowhere! The hike itself is relatively short, but it is steep. If going in the midday sun, bring a lot of water - and trekking poles, though not strictly necessary, are helpful. The fortress itself isn't much, but the viewpoints from it, are spectacular and worth the effort to get to, both in the drive there, and the hike.

Quality of Experience
A great hike to a great viewpoint. The fortress itself is a bit "meh" but that is a small component of a much larger experience.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
As usual, Antonio and Gonzalo did an amazing job of navigating the roads, and sharing the history and significance of the fortress, while also enduring the hike with us!
Classic Gastronomy Tour - Arequipa
Classic Gastronomy Tour - Arequipa
Arequipa

We had spent several days with our guide, Antonio, already, so he was familiar with our travel style, and our preferences for food and drink. As such, he was able to curate a food tour that was particularly aligned with our tastes (quite literally). We had a great time eating our way around Arequipa, combined with a nice walking tour of the city, and Antonio's lecture points.

Quality of Experience
Our guide made great choices on which places to visit and when. All of our eats were tasty local favorites, representative of the city and region.
Food
We are really well; local dishes in neighborhood cafes and restaurants that were not part of the main tourist circuit.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Antonio was great, setting up a walking and food tour that was on point.

The room was lovely and clean, but the experience at this hotel was strange. They wouldn’t give my husband and I each a key card for the room because they ran out of keys, but we both wanted to come in and out of the room at different times. We had terrible service at the restaurant (for example they brought out the wrong order for me and didn’t bother to correct it after I mentioned that the order was wrong, and service was slow), and the food wasn’t very good. They also put the wrong charges on our room and it took a while to correct. I also found the vibe strange - it felt like a hunting lodge meets wellness retreat.

The trip was so easy! We were met at the airport in Lima and taken to our hotel, picked up the next morning, taken to the airport for our flight to Cusco, and were picked up at the airport there and taken to our next adventure, and it continued that way through the whole trip. It was so nice not having to think about our transportation or accommodation. Many of our meals and tours were included. The local guides were great - David in the Sacred Valley, Angel on the Inca trail and Machu Picchu and Dennis in the rainforest. All were knowledgeable and well spoken and personable. They really made our trip special. I would not hesitate to recommend Kimkim to anyone.

This is a lovely hotel with on a beautiful property with a great restaurant. The downside is that it is a bit of a walk from the main square and located right beside the very busy train station. The first night we had dinner there and could smell the diesel fumes from the trains as they idled out front. Some people may appreciate the proximity to the train station, but I would have preferred to stay closer to the main part of town.

The staff at this hotel were wonderful. The hotel itself is being renovated with obvious signs of construction throughout. Unfortunately, not enough thought has gone into making the rooms accommodating for travellers. For instance, there was an outlet at the head of the bed - which would have been fine, except it was located directly behind the mattress and not usable. The walls were empty which made the room feel stark - but probably due to the renovations.

This was a fantastic hotel! Well located in Cusco - walking distance to the main square, and near many artists and shops and restaurants. The hotel itself is beautiful with many small touches to make guests feel welcome. For instance, they warm the beds with hot water bottles and offer tea bags and a thermos of hot water to make tea in your room when you arrive. The breakfast was included and it was excellent! One of the best I've had. There were many healthy choices at the partial buffet, and you also order eggs and other food from the menu.

The lamb and pork were really dry. Not sure if it was supposed to be that way or if they should've used larger cuts of meat. More carrots and fava beans wouldn't hurt. Overall, it was about the experience, so I didn't mind the dry meat, but the dry pork/lamb was the only thing that wasn't perfect.

This is a estate/mansion renovated into a hotel, located in the San Blas tourist district in Cusco. The hotel serves complimentary hot water & cocoa tea to help cope with altitude sickness. All rooms have comfortable beds and continuous running hot water. The staff here are helpful and courteous. Overall the place is great; but the couple of nits are that: 1. as a boutique hotel the rooms aren't uniform - we weren't satisfied with the initial room offered that was a converted attic, but the staff offered a good alternate room. 2. The space heaters provided aren't effective against the cold nights in Cusco and need to be updated; though the blankets/wool provided do help.

We have had a fabulous first experience with KimKim. Our guide Fran helped us plan the perfect trip and found hotels that suited exactly what we were looking for. She also helped with local tips on things like clothing and safety which was really helpful to hear from someone who really knows the country. From the moment we landed we were greeted with a lovely and friendly driver, and in Lima we had a great balance of fantastic guide called Jimena for our food tour, as well as time by ourselves to explore Baranco. Jimena was so friendly and helped us to experience the amazing food that Lima had to offer. They accommodated me well as a vegetarian and I really enjoyed everything we tried. We then went onto Cusco where we met our fabulous driver Alex and lovely guide Flor. Both were friendly and made us feel very safe. Flor was also like a personal photographer and seemed well known and liked by all the other local nature reserve staff and more. She was so knowledgeable on the history of Peru and the sites we visited and helped us with every question we had. Machu Picchu was an amazing experience with Flor and we felt really lucky having her as our guide. Other people nearby commented that they were jealous of us having such a good guide! Finally we went to Arequipa where we landed late and were met by Maya and Gonzalo. Both were also so friendly and kind. Maya became like a friend to us and we even saw her for lunch on her day off! They took us to the beautiful Colca Canyon and helped us with various issues like altitude sickness and travellers stomach issues (as did Flor!). We can’t fault our trip, it was spectacular. I only wish we had even more days to enjoy it all! All our hotels, food, visits and everything were amazing. Lots of little touches like travelling first class on Peru Rail we’re unexpected delights on our trip too. Thanks so much Fran, Kristy and all of the amazing staff we met along the way, we were delighted to be supporting local businesses as well as benefiting from their amazing expertise.

Our best hotel in Peru, we wish we had more time to enjoy this amazing place. We were greeted by Frank who went above and beyond to make sure we had a wonderful room ready for us with hot tea, hot water bottles and more, and Miguel who was so friendly and fantastic at breakfast. Wonderful views and amazing location! Can’t beat it. Lovely friendly front desk staff who helped us out with every question we had. The only improvement I’d recommend is slightly faster service on food. We allowed 30-45 mins for breakfast but found this wasn’t enough for us to order food and we had to skip this to make sure we weren’t late for our guide

Amazing views, totally unexpected. We loved the mini hike and seeing the flight of the condors

Amazing views, convenient stops along the way
Food
Some of the tourist buffet stops were great for trying a whole mix of foods, but didn’t feel as authentic as some local restaurants. I’m sure in some of these places there aren’t so many options but our favourite things were local stops where we felt more immersed in the culture rather than getting out with loads of other tourists

The mountain lodge was incredible, an unexpected and totally unique and beautiful experience which felt really fancy, remote and amazing. Food was delicious and the experience of seeing great llamas and alpacas outside (and occasionally trying to get in!) was amazing.

We loved hearing about the history in Cusco and just outside the city centre, but would have liked more time to also explore the life in the city itself. Perhaps the tour could have included more of the local streets etc in the city centre, or had more free time between the tour and the flight transfer to enjoy walking around a little more.

If you're looking for the epitome of travel excellence, look no further than Tamer. Let me tell you, our experience with Tamer, in collaboration with Kim Kim and Responsible Travel, was nothing short of enchanting.

This marks our second consecutive year entrusting Tamer to craft a journey of a lifetime for our students, and boy, did he deliver! Our destination this time was Peru, with all its awe-inspiring beauty. Tamer's meticulous planning ensured that every moment was infused with magic and wonder.

One of the highlights of our trip was undoubtedly the outstanding tour guides he arranged for us, Renato Diaz and Henry Gonzales. Their expertise in working with high school students was evident as they effortlessly blended fun and education throughout our 14-day adventure. From delving into the history of the Incan Empire to exploring the mystical Peruvian Amazon, every aspect of our itinerary was flawlessly executed.

Our journey took us through Lima, Cusco, Ollantaytambo, and Puerto Maldonado, with each destination offering its own unique charm. The accommodations were nothing short of breathtaking, and our air travel arrangements went off without a hitch.

From the bustling streets of Lima to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, every moment was filled with awe and wonder. Our days were packed with unforgettable experiences, from cooking classes to day trips to Rainbow Mountain and exploring the ancient ruins of Moray. And let's not forget our daily excursions into the heart of the Amazon rainforest – an experience that left us spellbound.

Already, we find ourselves eagerly planning our next adventure with Tamer. Year three beckons, and this time, we're setting our sights on Chile. With Tamer at the helm, we know that another extraordinary journey awaits us.

In short, if you want an unforgettable travel experience that seamlessly blends adventure, education, and pure magic, Tamer is the only choice.
