What you'll do

Your adventure begins in Flåm, nestled at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, where you'll board the Flåmsbana (Flåm Railway). As you settle into your vintage train compartment, you'll ascend through Flåmsdalen (Flåm Valley), noting the scenery transitioning from pastoral farmlands to rugged, mountainous terrain. Looking out your window, you'll also see the Flåmselvi river running alongside the railway for much of the journey, as well as be able to glimpse the small historic villages perched in isolated, if not precarious, locations.

One of the trip's highlights is a five-minute photo stop at Kjosfossen, where you can step out onto the train platform to take photos as the cascade feeds the river and makes its way toward Flåm. Back on board, you'll make the final ascent to arrive at Myrdal, a tiny mountain village 2,844 feet (867 m) above sea level and known primarily as the starting point of the Flåm Railway (though it's a crucial junction that connects travelers to the Bergen Line servicing Bergen and Oslo). On select days, you'll find a small kiosk at the Myrdal station that offers snacks and drinks, perfect for a quick refreshment before the hour return trip to Flåm.

This journey is not only a visual delight but also an homage to human ingenuity. Completed in 1940 after 17 years of construction, the line stretches 12 miles (20 km) and is renowned for being one of the steepest standard-gauge railways in the world. As the train navigates its way through 20 tunnels, 18 of which were painstakingly carved by hand, be impressed at a section that includes a daring 180-degree turn inside the mountain.
