What you'll do

This half-day excursion begins with a pickup at your accommodation in Porto, where you'll meet your driver, who will take you about an hour south to Aveiro. While the origins of this seaside city date back to ancient Roman times, it emerged as an important port during the Age of Discoveries in the 15th century. When you arrive in Aveiro, you'll hop on a tuk-tuk to take a guided ride around the city, where you'll learn about this history and possibly see sites like the University of Aveiro, Art Nouveau Museum, the azulejo-lined train station, or the Salinas. While exploring Aveiro, you'll have time to stop and try ovos moles de Aveiro (soft eggs of Aveiro), a pastry first made in the 16th century by nuns of the Convent of Jesus of Aveiro.

After the tuk-tuk ride, you'll explore the city via its famous canals with a guided trip in a moliceiro, one of the brightly painted traditional wooden boats once used to harvest algae. Relax in the moliceiro, as you cruise the canals of the Ria de Aveiro, taking in the city's streets lined with palheiros (striped and colorful houses). You'll discover the history behind the houses' unique design and how they're linked to the moliceiros as you feel the fresh breeze and see firsthand why people call this city the "Venice of Portugal." After the moliceiro trip, your driver will take you back to Porto.

The day in Aveiro and Costa Nova with Marta was a treat! Marta is an incredibly knowledgeable guide with a well-rounded repertoire of places to visit and things to try. First, we spent the morning and early afternoon touring Aveiro, learning about the city’s large array of Art Nouveau buildings as well as its history as a once, major exporter of sea salts. We viewed the active salt flats via tuk-tuk and visited local shops by foot to collect a variety of local salts, canned fish, and egg yolk treats. Perfect for culinary aficionados or home cooks!

We also enjoyed a boat tour on the canals of Aveiro where we learned that many of the guides are indeed local fishermen. It was a charming city. After Aveiro, Marta took us to dine in another town called Costa Nova. Here we enjoyed a fresh and delicious seafood lunch at Canastra do Fidalgo. Conversation with Marta was intriguing. We felt like we understood Portugal and way-of-life in the country much more holistically through her insights.
