What you'll do

The day begins with a pickup from your accommodations. You'll be brought to Sintra's center, where you'll meet your skilled guide. This all-day hike will cover six miles (10 km) and an elevation gain of 1,312 feet (400 m), as you trek through the rolling hills of this area that has captivated travelers for centuries. You'll encounter castles, palaces, and gardens, as your guide takes you through the dense forest of this land made famous in Lord Byron's epic poem, "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage." Like Childe Harold, the prototype of the Byronic hero ruminating on his life while wandering through nature, you'll get the chance to connect with Sintra's nature, history, and atmosphere, and see what thoughts may come.

You'll hike to some of the area's highlights, such as the Sintra National Palace, a fantastically preserved monument from the Middle Ages. Other stops include the 8th-century Moorish Castle, with its intact fortified wall, and Pena Palace, whose red and yellow facade is one of the best examples of Romantic architecture in Europe. Another highlight is a visit to Sintra Village, whose cobblestoned streets and colorful buildings embody the overall feeling of the area.

There's an option to stop for lunch. The hike will include a mix of nature and culture, as you'll be able to encounter these and other historic structures, walk through traditional village streets, and hike the peaceful trails lining the area. After finishing the hike, you'll be brought back to your accommodations.

This full day tour was incredible. Sintra was like walking into a fairy tale. We had a misty, cool day, and the castle decided it didn't want to be seen during our visit ;( but exploring the grounds was amazing. There was something at every turn. we loved seeing all of the different plants and trees, and hearing (and seeing a few) birds. There was something at every turn. we loved seeing all of the different plants and trees, and hearing (and seeing a few) birds. We asked for options to hike during our tour of Portugal, and this spot didn't disappoint. We opted to hike to the top near the old Moorish fort. It's a good 45 minute hike pretty much straight up. Coming down was a good workout as well. Sintra is definitely a hilly adventure and well worth it.

Tips for future travelers

Definitely do it, and yes, bring your hiking boots and pants. You could to this hike in tennis shoes, but the traction of the hiking boots came in handy. The walk down from the Moorish fort.was a mix of stone and trail path. Some of the trails did have undergrowth that could rub your legs, so the hiking pants helped prevent any scratches, rashes or bug bites.

Our guide Jorge was excellent. He was born in Sintra and provided interesting memories from his childhood. He grew up roaming around the castle grounds, and really gave insights that made the tour very special.
Transport
On time, suitable for the experience, roomy and clean.

Fabulous!!! FYI Nuno arrived at our hotel at 8 am, while Greg and I were enjoying a quick breakfast. At 8:30 someone knocked on my door to let me know Nuno was waiting .. I reread my notes which said 9 am pick up. Anyway, we hurried, Nuno hurried and we made on 9:45 ticket time for the tour of Peña palace. Next, we hiked through the neighboring woods about 3 miles, went to Cruz Alta then drove to Cabo da orca for an outstanding picnic lunch. Incredible. He then took us back the scenic... Read more

Sintra was a magical experience made even more so by our fabulous guide, Paulo. He took us on the hidden route up to the castle while many others waited in cars. It was fantastic walking amongst there's ancient walls and then the castle was incredible. After the strenuous ascent, Palo made us a satisfying lunch of Iberian meats, cheeses, and wine. After we descended fully we had a small taste of the local liquor, ginjinha, and of course an espresso. It was incredible. Read more

Make sure to get there when they open to avoid the lines into the castle.

Paulo our guide was great. He challenged us and made sure the group did not fall behind. He packed an amazing lunch and even lent us extra windbreakers when we got cold. He went out of his way to take us along the coast on the way home. Read more

It was still well worth the trip to see everything from the outside however. Bernardo was knowledgable and guided everywhere so we didn't get lost. Hiking the stairs up to the fortress was a little scary. Once you make it to the top, the stairs back down are way less scary. People without guides didn't know there was a back staircase to get back down. Our guide was very helpful.
