What you'll do

The day begins with a pick-up at your hotel in Manuel Antonio. You'll discuss possible menus for the day's meal as you head to a farmer's market in Quepos, where you'll explore the stands' offerings, get a glimpse of local life amid the busy vendors, and pick out seasonal ingredients for lunch. Next, you'll transfer to the village of Londres, home to a private ranch where you'll attend a cooking class with a local chef.

After a warm welcome, take a stroll around the ranch's organic garden, choosing fresh herbs and produce for your meal. Then it's time to roll up your sleeves and start cooking, helping to prepare a seasonal meal full of classic Costa Rican flavors and regional products. Depending on the menu, you might learn how to make corn tortillas, help prepare a perfect ceviche starter with plantains, or perfect a classic chicken in tomato sauce recipe. Your chef will also give you handy pointers and tips to help you recreate these authentic dishes back home.

When you finish in the kitchen, it's time to sit down and enjoy a relaxed meal with your fellow guests and chefs. Savor the dishes you helped create and enjoy a convivial chat about local cuisine and life on a Costa Rican ranch. Afterward, you'll have plenty of time to take a walk around the ranch to meet the animals and go for a swim in the Río Naranjo before heading back to Manuel Antonio.

Fun experience on the tour owners farm. There were only 4 of us on this tour so everyone got the chance to dice the veggies and stir the pots! Delicious food and we were given the recipes at the end!!

It was fun to get out of town and see some of the countryside.

Tips for future travelers

Fun experience.

This was really fun.
Our guide, Karla, from Toucanes tours was so funny and friendly!
The food we helped cook was delicious and I am inspired to try making the dish at home.
My son enjoyed cooking as well.
It was just my son and I so we got all the attention.

A fantastic way to learn more about Costa Rican life outside the tourist towns. Fifst we stopped by the Mercado in Quepos to see where everyone shops. Then Toucanes Tours took us to their rancho located outside of town. They had several different animals on the ranch, we hand picked some herbs and vegetables. Then we cooked! It was just my wife and I - we had a great time learning to make plantain ceviche (delicioso!), rice, chicken and handmade corn tortillas! What a great meal to share with... Read more
