What you'll do

An ATV adventure through the beautiful landscapes of the Maras and Moray is the perfect way to experience the natural beauty of this remarkable destination. Throughout the day, you'll experience breathtaking views, learn fascinating history, and feel the thrill of riding through lush fields against the backdrop of the snowcapped Andes.

Your guide will give you clear instructions on operating the ATV safely before you begin. Once you feel confident, you'll set off on your journey toward Moray, passing through vibrant yellow wheat fields and quaint villages on the way. Enjoy the beautiful mountain views and soak in the beautiful surroundings as you ride.

Upon arriving at Moray, you'll explore the Inca terraces, which resemble amphitheaters carved deep into the earth. These unique structures are believed to have been used by the Incas to determine the optimal conditions for growing crops. Your guide will share interesting stories about the history and significance of these impressive terraces.

Next, you'll head about two miles away to the ancient salt mines of Maras. This village, dating back to pre-Incan times, is known for its over 3,000 salt pools carved into the mountainside. Every day, a stream of water fills these pools, showcasing the exceptional skills of the people who built them. Your guide will walk you through the area, explaining the history and importance of this former salt-producing center.

After exploring Maras, you'll hop back onto your ATV and make your way to Chinchero for a fascinating insight into local craftsmanship. Here, you'll get to see how the locals make sweaters and other items, and you can buy some unique things to remember your trip by.

The morning drive to Moray took us through a less used road which was actually really nice because it gave us a chance to see the path the locals often take as well as unique views of the Sacred Valley. It also did allow us to pull over and get lots of photos as needed. The salt flats were amazing to see as were the Moray terraces.

The ATV tour with Mountainview Experiences was probably the weakest link in our entire tour. It took a bit of time for them to get us organized (which is abnormal as everything else on this was super smooth). One of us then ran out of gas fairly early on and we got stuck for a while waiting for someone to bring us more gas; another ATV group came across us and the tour operator made us switch ATVs with the other group so we could continue on...only for us to run into the other group still stuck on our loop back which made us feel awful ( we assumed they were done and hence the switch but that seems less likely now). A bit more time stopping to see the views and take pictures would have been nice but it seems this didn't happen due to the previous delays and us having to catch a train. The instructions on how to ride the ATVs were mostly clear and outside of the delay/issue it was an enjoyable experience otherwise.

The salt flats were nice and our guide took us to a stall where we were able to try some chocolates with no pressure to buy anything. They even pulled over so we could get some nice shots of the flats before we made it all the way down.

This was OK but not the best part of the trip. We enjoyed it but with hindsight would have spent this time doing something a little different - a Sacred Valley tour with more time in Ollantanytambo. 4 wheelers not well-maintained but they worked just good enough. If you're being transported here be sure to have your guide / driver stop in Chinchero to see the locals manufacture sweaters and local materials. I wish we'd been able to spend more time here. Tips for future travelers

I'd skip this. The Inca ruins at Moray are interesting but the smallest and least favorite of all the ones we experienced (Cusco city, Machu Picchu, Ollantanytambo).

If you have plenty of time in your schedule, this isn't bad but if you're on a short trip I'd totally skip this.
