What you'll do

Your adventure begins with a convenient morning pickup from your hotel in Papagayo Bay or the Tamarindo area. You'll comfortably travel aboard an air-conditioned minivan en route to Palo Verde National Park, a sprawling haven for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers. This protected park, covering over 45,000 acres (18,211 ha) of wetlands and tropical dry forest, is a vital habitat for migratory birds and boasts a rich diversity of plant and animal life. During the trip, your guide will provide insightful commentary about the landscapes you'll pass through, setting the stage for your day's exploration.

Upon arrival at the park, you'll set out on a two-hour boat cruise along the Tempisque River. This leisurely cruise is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant ecosystem of the wetlands. Your guide will share fascinating details about the area's hydrologic characteristics, contributing to its status as a Ramsar site of international importance. Keep your eyes peeled for the array of wildlife that calls this area home. You may spot monkeys swinging through the trees, crocodiles lounging on the riverbanks, and an impressive variety of bird species, including scarlet macaws, tiger herons, and the jabiru, the largest bird in Costa Rica.

Afterward, you'll have the chance to engage with talented resident artists dedicated to preserving the region's renowned pottery and handicraft traditions. You'll watch a captivating demonstration of their creative processes followed by a tasty lunch of traditional Costa Rican fare at a rustic venue, a fitting conclusion to the day before you're transferred back to your accommodation.

This is remote--we enjoyed seeing the countryside, but it was a long time in the car. The boat tour itself was excellent, and the captain was very skilled at spotting wildlife and maneuvering the boat in close for a good look. It was in our favor that it was low tide and there was a breeze. The lunch and stops at a community center with a craft stand run by single moms as well as a stop to see traditional pottery were both quite interesting and a nice change from many of the souvenir shops... This tour included lunch which was authentic and amazing. The boat tour was okay. We saw birds, bats and crocodiles. For the last 1/2 hour or so, the guides were chatting with themselves instead of us so not sure if they missed pointing things out to us or not. We were on the water for maybe 1.5 hours? Tips for future travelers

Very bumpy roads to get to the restaurant and the river.

Quality of Experience
Was shorter than what I thought it would be, not a lot of wildlife to see
Food
Authentic and delicious
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Seemed disinterested in us towards the end of the ride, chatting amongst themselves
Transport
Driver was great but roads super bumpy

We weren't sure what to expect for this tour but it turned out to be a fun adventure! The boat tour itself was lovely. Lots of birds and wildlife to see. Our guide, Mauricio, was fabulous! The included lunch was so cool. We stopped at a local ranch to enjoy a traditional Costa Rican lunch, cooked right there over wood. followed by Costa Rican coffee. It was lovely! We also got a bonus stop at a town known for traditional pottery where we were given a demonstration.

Tips for future travelers

I didn't realize we would be spending quite so much time driving, so that's good to know. Bring snacks if you are a snacky person, and water. It is very hot in Guanacaste so be prepared for that.

Food
I really enjoy the traditional Costa Rican fare and this was especially delicous!
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Mauricio was engaging, knowledgeable and passionate about his country.
Transport
This rating may be misleading - we had a great experience on the transport, but they had to make an extra trip to pick up guests before backtracking to the boat so some of us spent quite a bit more time on the bus than we expected. At the end of the tour our guide, Mauricio, did arrange to have a different bus meet us partway, which was very kind.

Pretty good tour, and we definitely saw lots of wildlife such as monkeys and the most amazing thing was the bats hanging on the tree trunk that looked like pieces of bark. The guide was very knowledgable, and was able to spot the animals that even with his direction we had to really search for to see. However, the boat part of the trip was pretty short, probably an hour. And the rest of the tour was the restaurant, pottery etc. Which is not really our cup of tea. Read more

This was highly recommended, but we were underwhelmed, mostly because the trip there was 2.5 hours and we had to take two buses (and we also stopped at a ceramic workshop on the way back, which was fine but lengthened the trip back). That was a lot of travel for my five-year-old. The boat tour itself was fine but you are rarely out of view of the dock and it would have been nice to go deeper into the park, or perhaps get out of the boat at some point. I would give the guides a five though, and my three stars is largely a function of the distance and the age of my kids.

Don't be shy. Ask questions. Our guide was so helpful not just about the animals we were seeing, but he also taught us about Costa Rican history and culture.

Tips for future travelers

The bus will stop on unpaved roads if there's an interesting animal to see. PRO TIP: you can open the bus windows if you'd like to take a picture.

Given that this is a wildlife tour, it was fun that the bus was willing to stop on the route to point to various Costa Rican animals.
