What you'll do

After a short transfer from your hotel in La Fortuna, you'll meet your naturalist guide and begin the easy hike through the lush tropical forest. You'll walk through 50 acres (20 ha) of land where the famous cecropia trees grow, a favored location for both two-toed and three-toed sloths, who love to hang out on these trees and munch on their bright green leaves. Spanning just 1.2 miles (2 km), the "sloth trail" is perfect for the entire family, allowing everyone to explore at a leisurely pace.

As you wander through the dense vegetation, keep your eyes peeled; sloths often blend seamlessly into the canopy. Thanks to your guide's skill, they'll point out several of these slow-moving creatures, as well as share insights into their behavior and habits. Beyond the eternally smiling sloths, the rainforest is teeming with a variety of bird species. From toucans to tanagers, you'll have the chance to observe these feathered friends both in the wild and at feeders near the trailhead. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture the vivid colors and lively antics of the birds and any other wildlife that crosses your path.

In addition to sloths and birds, your guide will also help you identify other endemic creatures, such as poison dart frogs, bats, and a plethora of insects, each playing a unique role in the ecosystem.

To round off your adventure, you'll enjoy complimentary drinks and snacks, offering a moment to reflect on the day's discoveries before it's time to return to your accommodation or, if desired, a drop-off in town to explore shops and restaurants.

This was the only time we saw sloths the whole thanks to Jose! We saw 4 and he was apologetic that we didn't see more, but he didn't need to be. We were so happy - and we even saw some poison dart frogs that we definitely would not have seen without a guide! He dropped us off in town after so we could explore the shops and restaurants. We were able to spot 5 or 6 sloths during our walk. I wouldn't have seen a single one on my own without a guide as these animals camouflage very well, so make sure that you go with one. The wooden area houses some number of toucans, although in terms of sheer diversity, the best spot is at the feeders at the start of the hike. Tons of various tanagers and honeycreepers and great Kiskadees and other birds. Read more

Tips for future travelers

The 'photography day' is effectively over at 2PM during the rainy season, as rain reliably starts around that time and the clouds make the wooden area shockingly dark. Make sure to bring rain gear. If you bring weather-sensitive photography equipment, try to schedule your trip in the morning.
