What you'll do
Your glacier adventure starts when you arrive 20 minutes before your scheduled time at the Sólheimajökull Base Camp, located just over two hours east of Reykjavík and just off the famous Ring Road on Iceland's South Coast. This vast 5-mile (8 km) long ice mass is actually an outlet glacier of the much larger Myrdalsjökull, and its easy accessibility, dramatic ice walls, and dazzling color patterns make it one of the best spots in the country for a glacier hike.
Begin by meeting your guides (professionals who hold the highest glacier guiding qualifications and are active members of local search and rescue teams) and get equipped with the necessary safety gear, including crampons and helmets. Then, it's time to step into a specially designed glacier truck and set off for the starting point of your walk. As you step out onto the ice, you'll spot deep crevasses and water cauldrons and notice how the glacier's color varies from bright white and deep blue to volcanic black.
Your guides will share fascinating insights about the area's unique geological features, including how glaciers and volcanoes helped carve the current landscape. Overall, you'll spend about 1-1.5 hours on the glacier itself and have plenty of opportunities to capture remarkable photos of the icy backdrops. Another drive in the glacier truck will take you back to base camp, where you'll drop off your equipment and say your goodbyes to your guides and your fellow adventurers.
