What you'll do

Begin your adventure by meeting your guide and instructor on Strand von Flåm, the beach in Flåm, where you'll receive a thorough introduction to sea kayaking. Safety is a priority, so your experienced guide will ensure you feel comfortable and confident before hitting the water. Once you're ready, you'll push off from the beach and begin paddling into the calm waters of the Aurlandsfjord.

As you glide through the fjord, you'll pass the Otternes Bygdetun farmyard, a historic cluster of 27 old buildings from the 1700s that overlook the Auralandsfjord from their hilly perch. Your guide will share insight into Otternes, enhancing your understanding of the local culture and history of the Aurland area. Continuing your journey, you'll make your way toward Fronnes, where ancient Viking-age grave mounds and archaeological remains await.

The entire trip lasts around three hours, giving you ample time to soak in the natural beauty and tranquility of the fjord landscape. Keep an eye out for wildlife—if lucky, you might spot seals, otters, or even porpoises in the water. The excursion is designed to be enjoyable for everyone, regardless of previous kayaking experience.

I'm a kimkim staff member and I was on a work trip when I experienced the Summer Kayaking Excursion. I'm a kimkim staff member and I was on a work trip when I experienced the Summer Kayaking Excursion. My guide, Patryk, was a fantastic German exchange traveler who actually lived about 10-minutes from where I spent some time living in Stuttgart! He was a great guide who helped everyone tremendously, gave informative knowledge about the fjord, the waterfalls we passed, Flåm, the city of Aurland we passed, and a sunken WWII battleship that could be dove to if you’re certified! Patryk and I talked for a bit after, he suggested a couple waterfalls that I could hike to from Flåm, and we plan to connect when he visits Colorado at the end of next summer for a kayaking trip.

Tips for future travelers

One minor note is that this experience does not allow you to solo kayak, you have to do duo’s - if you’re alone, you will be paired up with a stranger; I was paired up with the older mother of a couple and she was extremely nice, talkative, but I had to do 90% of the rowing (great workout that I didn’t mind because of my fitness level but just something to note for other travelers).

Tips for future travelers

You don't have to worry about getting wet (not even your feet). They provide a water skirt to keep water off your lap too, as well as a water-tight box for your phone/camera if you want.
