What you'll do

Meet your guide at Plaza Nueva, the oldest square in Granada (despite its name meaning the "New Square"). From here, you'll embark on a journey through history and flavors, starting in the Albaicín, Granada's beautiful Arab Quarter. As you navigate its narrow, winding streets, your guide will share stories of its rich cultural heritage and how it continues to shape the city. The Arab influence is not only visible in the architecture but also in the local cuisine. You'll have your first taste of tapas, a dish rooted in this historical period, as you explore the little Marrakesh of Granada, a street nicknamed Calle de las Teterías (Tea Houses Steet).

Your culinary adventure continues to the lively central marketplace, renowned for its fresh produce and local delicacies. Your guide will help you select some of the best tapas and drinks, ensuring you try the must-have local jamón asado. With each visit to a tapas bar, you'll enjoy a drink and a choice of shared plates, allowing a delightful variety of flavors, best experienced in a group setting. This is a great opportunity to dive into the local gastronomy and enjoy the communal dining culture that is a hallmark of Granada.

As you make your way through the city's historic center, you'll be met with some of Granada's monuments, including the resting place of Queen Isabella and Ferdinand, while learning intriguing tales of the city's past. The walk concludes in a lively tavern in the heart of Granada's social scene. Here, you'll indulge in a traditional pionono, a dessert with a fascinating local story that perfectly caps off the evening.

Our private guide, Theresa, met us at the main square at 8pm and we proceeded to wander. We went to 3 different places and with 4 drinks and generous tapas (and we ordered one extra dish at the first place that I think we probably did not need to portion wise). At the end, she pointed us towards other options, though, honestly I was stuffed and had had enough to drink.
I can't see doing this in a group as many of these places are small and crowded. The big advantage having the guide for us was overcoming our reticence to go into authentic or cool looking places that looked too crowded. We would not have gone into some of the places she took us and they were excellent.

Tips for future travelers

If you are a little reticent or cautious and a little overwhelmed but how crowded cities are here compared to home, this broke the ice well for us. We had a little more courage the rest of our stay to try more authentic places. Honestly, though, the food everywhere was good.
