Abelonas Retreat Sunset & Sunrise Lodgings, Santorini

4.2 (19 reviews) · Mid-range
Cliffside retreat with sea-view terraces, Cycladic-style rooms, outdoor pool, and room-delivered breakfast

Overview

Residing in the quiet village of Imerovigli, Abelonas Retreat is perched on a cliff known as "The Balcony of the Aegean," treating guests to sweeping views of the southern Aegean Sea and the caldera. Restaurants, transport, and hiking trails to viewpoints and sites, like Skaros Rock, are within walking distance. Rooms embrace Cycladic style with bright, airy interiors, whitewashed walls, and private balconies; some also include living areas and kitchenettes for longer stays. Guests can unwind at the outdoor pool and sun terrace or enjoy breakfast delivered to their rooms.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • Abelonas Retreat's location is ideal. It's away from the buzz of Fira and set at the island's cliff edge, giving guests those iconic caldera views.
  • Cycladic-style rooms are bright and airy, with a private balcony or terrace, most overlooking the caldera.
  • Abelonas Retreat is within walking distance of the Ekklesia Theoskepasti hiking trail and is close to several restaurants and bars.
  • Breakfast is delivered to your room each morning, with a variety of options to choose from the day before.
  • To make up for the lack of beach access on the caldera side of the island, guests can enjoy the outdoor pool and its views.
Cons
  • The showers in some bathrooms are small, with some flooding into the bathroom space.
  • While breakfast is made to order and delivered to guests' rooms, it starts at 8 am, which could be later than expected for early risers.

Authenticity

Abelonas Retreat's two-story property blends traditional Cycladic-style details with the contemporary, evident in its whitewashed and rounded corners and colorful accents, typical of Santorini's aesthetic. While the hotel doesn't boast a long history, its quieter location in Imerovigli village helps garner a more authentic feel. Guests can also find Greek breakfast items on the menu, including, of course, yogurt.

Location

Located in the tranquil village of Imerovigli, Abelonas Retreat is an 11-minute drive north of the busier Fira. Yet it's conveniently located within a five-minute walk to restaurants, bars, and the Imerovigli bus stop. The hotel is a short walk to the Ekklesia Theoskepasti hiking trail, which leads to the Skaros Venetian Fortress, Skaros Rock, and Theoskepasti Church. Meanwhile, the nearest beach, Limanaki, is on the opposite coast, a 13-minute drive east. Fira is just over a mile (2 km) away, and Santorini Airport is a 15-minute drive.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Thirteen bright and airy rooms, comprised of studios, suites, and maisonettes, make up the property. Each has whitewashed walls, colorful accent textiles (turquoise, orange, pink, green, and red), and gray-tiled floors and bathrooms. Options range from smaller studios that can accommodate two guests to two-story maisonettes with private entrances that accommodate up to four people. All units have a balcony or larger terrace to take in a sunset and/or sunrise. While the rooms are spacious, some bathrooms are compact, and showers may cause water to spread across the bathroom floor.

Amenities

The hotel's medium-sized outdoor pool is a highlight. Set on a terrace with ocean views, there are about a half dozen lounge chairs by the pool—open from 8 am to 8 pm—and a pool bar serving drinks and snacks. Bonus, the pool usually isn't crowded. Although there isn't an on-site restaurant, guests can order breakfast a day ahead for a morning delivery, where they can enjoy it on their private balcony. As a cliffside retreat, the property may be challenging for those with strollers or limited mobility.

Family-Friendliness

Families will want to look into booking one of the two Maisonette categories, which offer separate sleeping areas on different levels, sleeping up to four guests. A babysitting service is available for a fee, though other child-specific amenities are limited. The hotel charges children over six as adults, and no extra cots or cribs are provided. Moreover, the property's numerous stairs may pose challenges for families with strollers, making it more suitable for those with older children.

This hotel is in a great location - many restaurants literally steps away. It was quiet and had views of both the sunrise and sunset which are hard to get on the island. Yannis was helpful at reception. There is breakfast made to order and delivered to your room every morning. There are beautiful views although somewhat (minimally) obstructed by the location (restaurants, electric wires). The reason for 4 rather than 5 stars is that the room could use some updating, the bathroom sometimes would smell, and the shower was TINY. Overall, a very laid back vibe, excellent location, and good views.

Authenticity & Character
Very cute room, but could use some updating.
Location
Great spot, close to a lot of restaurants and walking paths.
Staff
Yannis was very friendly and helpful, but some of the other staff were not as hospitable.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The bed was surprisingly comfortable as well as the chairs and tables set out to relax. There's a great outdoor lounge area above the hotel and pool where you can enjoy the views.

Our stay at Abelonas Retreat in Santorini was good but had some issues. We had six rooms in total, and one couple ended up with a room where the bed was against two walls, making it very inconvenient. This was the only place where we felt a bit let down.

The room with the loft where we stayed was a bit deceiving. You could not even stand up straight in the loft nor the bathroom that is up there. I would not recommend this unit for 4 adults, but if traveling with younger kids it should work ok.
The main bathroom with the shower is tiny. For women who shave their legs, good luck doing that in this shower.
The staff is awesome, which helps to make up for some of these downsides.

VIEWS!!!! Overall, good location. A spacious room w/ a large balcony (caldera view). We could view the sunrise from either the opposite side of the balcony or from the room entrance. A rooftop access from the room’s loft area. Breakfast served to the room to enjoy on our balcony. The shower was a bit tricky. It was quite small with short glass shower “walls” which resulted in water easily getting all over the bathroom . Read more

Staff was very nice. Beautiful views and pool. Breakfast is ordered day before and brought to your room. They even prepared a boxed breakfast for us the day we left due to an early flight.
Be advised some rooms (like ours) have significant amount of outside steps.

Had a short but challenging walk from where we were dropped off by our driver to the hotel. Took us a while to locate the hotel office. Once there, while i was signing the group in, the inn keeper made a nasty comment about my unseen but heard (grown) "children"who were trying to get all of our luggage down the steep ramp onto the hotel property. There were some laughs but nothing disruptive.
Bathroom was nothing special (it was impossible to shower without flooding the bathroom, the tile in the entire bathroom/shower was slippery when wet).
Though reported by the innkeeper that the breakfasts were "award winning," we found them to be nothing special. In fact, of all the places we stayed, it was the worst. Breakfast is delivered to your room in 15 minute increments. The innkeeper also complained that our 9:30 AM tour was messing up the breakfast schedule since they don't start delivering breakfast until 8:30 AM, can only delivery to one room every 15 minutes and the earliest times were already booked. As a concession, he agreed to serve us cold options at 8 AM.

Authenticity & Character
Very pretty.
Location
Busses are within walking distance and got us where we wanted to go more reliably than a taxi.
Staff
Paul was very uptight but warmed a bit with time.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The room was clean and bed comfortable. The bathroom left much to be desired. Innkeeper (Paul) could be friendlier and more welcoming to guests arriving tired and weary, even if it is 12:30 PM.
