Avra Hotel Rafina, Athens

4.0 (36 reviews) · Standard
Convenient, business-oriented hotel with modern rooms, excellent sea views, and free airport shuttle service

Overview

Avra Hotel Rafina is a modern property in the port suburb of Rafina, Athens, on the Petalioi Gulf. Guests will appreciate its strategic location, which is steps away from the sandy Rafina Beach and the port—ideal for catching a ferry—while just a 20-minute drive from Athens International Airport. The bright, compact rooms, decorated with contemporary furnishings and equipped with private balconies, offer city or sea views, providing an efficient space for travelers. Amenities include a modest 24/7 gym, a restaurant with Mediterranean cuisine overlooking the ocean, and a complimentary airport shuttle catering to both leisure and business visitors.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • Avra Hotel is conveniently located near Rafina Port and just a short walk from its beach.
  • The hotel offers a free shuttle service to Athens International Airport, about a 20-minute drive away.
  • Rooms feature private balconies with either city or sea views, providing a pleasant spot to relax.
  • The restaurant serves a generous buffet breakfast included in your stay (6 am-10 am), with options inspired by Mediterranean and Cretan cuisine.
  • Families will appreciate the variety of room configurations, including interconnecting rooms and rooms that sleep up to four guests.
  • The hotel's Aegean Breeze restaurant offers a 15% discount on meals, and the lobby bar offers a selection of local wines and cocktails.
Cons
  • Although the rooms are soundproofed, due to the hotel's location near busy roads and the port, you may experience some traffic noise.
  • And while Avra Hotel doesn't have a pool or spa, its proximity to the beach offers an alternative for relaxation.

Authenticity

As a modern airport hotel, built in 1968 and renovated in 2019, with contemporary furnishings and decor, you won't find much in the way of an authentic Greek experience, but you will enjoy beautiful sea views and close proximity to the beach, port, and a convention center. However, Avra Hotel's restaurant, Aegean Breeze, offers a taste of the region with a menu inspired by Mediterranean and Cretan cuisine.

Location

Situated in Rafina, Avra Hotel is conveniently positioned near Athens' second-largest port, just a short walk from Rafina's Beach and a 20-minute drive from Athens International Airport. While the hotel isn't ideal for exploring Athens itself—a 40-minute drive away—it serves as a strategic spot for travelers in transit, offering easy access to ferries bound for Greek islands and the airport. There are restaurants and bars, particularly those specializing in fresh seafood, within a 10-minute walk.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The rooms at Avra Hotel while compact are cleverly designed and feature bright contemporary decor with white linens, cool gray and dark blue accent walls, modern art, and white or light wood furnishings. Large French doors allow natural light to fill the space, leading to private balconies with views of the port or town. The bathrooms are semi-open, with a slatted screen separating them from the sleeping area, and feature ample counter space and separate shower and toilet areas. The rooms are soundproofed, ensuring a generally quiet environment despite the hotel's busy surroundings.

Amenities

Avra Hotel offers a small gym equipped with basic fitness machines, open 24/7 for guests. The standout feature is the Aegean Breeze restaurant, which provides a generous breakfast buffet, open from 6 am to 10 am daily, and Mediterranean-inspired meals with sea views. The hotel's lobby bar, Avra Marina Bar & Lounge, serves local wines and cocktails in a stylish yet relaxed setting. The hotel also includes a free shuttle service to and from the airport, adding convenience for guests.

Family-Friendliness

Avra Hotel is family-friendly, offering a range of room configurations to accommodate families of different sizes. Cribs are available for infants, and the restaurant provides a kids' menu and child-friendly breakfast options. Babysitting services can be arranged, and the hotel's proximity to Rafina Beach is a plus for families. The presence of an elevator makes the hotel accessible for those with strollers.

The main attraction of this hotel is that it is located by the port where the ferries come through and near to the airport (to which it offers a shuttle service) o it is good for people in transit. The free shuttle to the airport at 3am is the main reason I stayed here. In the future I will plan for a later flight so I don't have to stay again. Overall the experience was okay. Read more

Authenticity & Character
It was a run-of-the-mill corporate hotel.
Location
The noise from the surrounding neighborhood was unbearable.
Staff
The staff seemed fine. When the airport shuttle was delayed, they arranged for a car for us, which was nice.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Although it was clean, it didn't feel very homey. The biggest issue, however, was the noise at night (which was coming from outside the hotel).
