Contemporary hilltop hotel with historic touches, a rooftop pool with panoramic views over La Concha beach, and Basque-inspired dining

Overview

Modern architecture meets the remnants of a 17th-century monastery at Hotel Catalonia Donostia. From a scenic perch on a hilltop in central San Sebastián, guests can stroll to La Concha beach and the Cathedral in under 10 minutes. Rooms are decorated in a cozy English country house style with dark wood floors, leather furniture, and floral wallpapers, and some include terraces and sea views. Amenities include a rooftop terrace with an outdoor pool, a small spa, and an on-site restaurant and bar serving creative Basque-inspired dishes and local wines.

Pros
  • A hilltop location gives you elevated views and easy access to the city center.
  • The hotel's modern architecture incorporates portions of the facade and towers of a 17th-century monastery.
  • Rooms channel an English country house-feel, with dark woods, floral wallpapers, and leather headboards.
  • You'll get panoramic views over the city and sea from the rooftop terrace and pool.
  • The on-site Aldapeta Gastrobar serves Basque-inspired dishes and local wines.
Cons
  • It's an uphill walk to the hotel, but a handy private elevator connects you with the city center.
  • Some rooms don't face the sea, so book early if you prefer the coastal vistas.
  • Entry to the downstairs spa isn't included in the room rate (except for the upgraded suites).

Authenticity

Hotel Catalonia Donostia opened in 2020, blending modern architecture and design into the remains of a 17th-century hilltop monastery. The dramatic entrance incorporates the convent's original three towers and restored central church, but the overall effect is contemporary, with interiors inspired by the cozy, clubby feel of an English country house. Think dark wood floors, plush leather furniture, floral wallpapers, and plaid blankets accented with historic remnants like stone walls and columns. The on-site restaurant channels more of a regional theme, with a menu based around Basque country flavors.

Location

You'll be located right in the center of San Sebastián, perched on the natural viewpoint of San Bartolomé. This lofty setting means panoramic sea and city views and quieter surroundings. A handy private elevator takes you down to street level when you want to save time (or skip the uphill climb at the end of the day). You'll be less than 10 minutes on foot from the cathedral, train station, and La Concha beach; a 15-minute stroll takes you into the cobbled streets and pintxos bars of the Parte Vieja (Old Town). There's paid underground parking and EV charging stations on-site, and it's a 25-minute drive to the airport.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The 128 rooms are furnished in a cozy, English country house style, with leather benches, velvet or leather headboards, tartan blankets, and floral wallpapers. Options range from compact Singles with sea views (located in the atmospheric original watchtower) to larger Doubles and spacious Suites with separate living areas and private terraces. Bathrooms are well-appointed, most with walk-in showers, bidets, and ample counter space. All rooms include air-conditioning, WiFi, soundproofing, and tea and coffee-making facilities.

Amenities

A big draw here is the rooftop terrace, complete with a sun deck, seating, an outdoor pool (unheated and seasonal), and incredible views. Head downstairs for a modern fitness room and a small spa area with a sauna, steam bath, cold pool, and massage cabins. When you get hungry, grab a plush banquette with a view at the Aldapeta Gastrobar and choose from a menu of creative Basque-inspired dishes with an emphasis on regional produce and seafood. The central marble-topped bar serves a nice selection of local wines and ciders, and an extensive breakfast buffet is served in the same space each morning.

Family-Friendliness

Catalonia Donosti welcomes families. Children under three can stay for free, and those aged three to 11 get charged a child rate. The Triple and Family rooms are good options for families; some have bunk beds or extra twin beds.

Very nice rooms in modern hotel with great breakfast. It was a hike to old town, where we spent most of our time. Our room was large and comfortable for 3 but we did not have a great view. I think if you stay over on top of this hill it's worth it if you view the bay. Read more

My room had views of Concha Beach and windows that opened for fresh air. It was modern with local touches. The room was big, and the bed was comfortable. There is a rooftop pool with views of the old town and the beaches, a gym, and a spa.

The breakfast buffet had a variety of options for vegans and meat eaters. There is a parking garage under the hotel with convenient access and an elevator to the lobby.
