Hotel Astoria, Barcelona

4.4 (12 reviews) · Mid-range
Boutique hotel with Art Deco facade, excellent in-house restaurant, and a rooftop terrace with a pool

Overview

The eight-story Astoria Hotel was built in 1953 and features an Art Deco-style facade with a stately lobby, marble columns, and a spiral staircase. But don't let this opulence overwhelm you, as the more than 100 guestrooms are decorated in a soothing, minimalist, and modern style with contemporary art and comforts (and underwent a full renovation in 2008). You can enjoy views of Barcelona from the rooftop terrace, complete with a bar and plunge pool, and you can easily explore Barcelona and its sites from its downtown Eixample location. If you're a foodie, try Catalan cuisine at the in-house Restaurant Astor.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • The Astoria Hotel has a rooftop terrace with sun loungers, a bar, a plunge pool, and views overlooking the city.
  • Rooms are modern, chic, and comfortable for guests.
  • You can try some excellent Catalan food at the highly-praised in-house Restaurant Astor.
  • You'll be in a prime location near Avenida Diagonal and Passeig de Gràcia, surrounded by top international shops and boutiques and within walking distance of major attractions like Casa Milà and Casa Batlló.
  • Art enthusiasts will appreciate the Opisso Museum room, which showcases over 300 works by the Catalan illustrator Ricard Opisso alongside a collection of early 20th-century poster art.
Cons
  • Due to the hotel's central location, some street-facing rooms may experience noise, but courtyard-facing rooms offer a quieter alternative.
  • The rooftop pool, while offering a charming spot for relaxation, can become crowded, particularly in the mornings and on sunny days.

Authenticity

Owned by Derby Hotels, Astoria is a historic gem built in 1953 and features an Art Deco facade and a grand marble lobby adorned with stately columns and a spiral staircase. Off the lobby is a "museum room" dedicated to the Catalan illustrator Ricard Opisso, showcasing over 300 works. Additionally, you'll find a collection of early 20th-century poster art and modernist and Art Nouveau advertising-themed posters adorning the walls, including in the Restaurant Astoria. You can savor Catalan market cuisine amid these artistic masterpieces.

Location

Located in the Eixample district, Astoria Hotel is perfectly located next to the iconic Avenida Diagonal and Passeig de Gràcia—Barcelona's most fashionable shopping area. It's a short walk to popular attractions like Casa Milà (10 minutes), Casa Batlló (15 minutes), Palau Ramon de Montaner (15 minutes), and Passeig de Gràcia (15 minutes). The bustling area offers a mix of historic and modern vibes, with cafés, brewpubs, and LGBTQ+ bars nearby. The hotel is well-connected to public transport, with the Diagonal metro station just a 5-minute walk away, making it easy to reach other parts of the city. From the rooftop terrace, you can enjoy views of the city and Barcelona's hills.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The more than 100 rooms at Astoria are modern and minimalist, each designed with parquet floors, glass desks, contemporary artwork, and en suite bathrooms outfitted with eco-friendly toiletries and marble countertops. Past travelers have consistently praised the hotel's cleanliness, comfort, and ample natural light. Larger parties will want to book the Family Room, which sleeps up to four guests, offering a sizeable terrace with street views. Other options include Single, Double Standard, and Double Superior. Light sleepers will want to request a room that faces the inner courtyard

Amenities

The hotel's rooftop terrace is a standout feature, offering a seasonal swimming pool with sun loungers, city views, and a poolside bar serving tapas and cocktails. The fitness center, though small, provides basic equipment for a quick workout. The Astoria Bar, located next to the Opisso Museum room, offers a relaxing space to enjoy drinks and snacks surrounded by art. The hotel also features a billiard room for a touch of leisure. The hotel is accessible with ramps and elevators, and most rooms are mobility-friendly.

The on-site Restaurant Astor serves Catalan market cuisine amid modernist and Art Nouveau signage. If you prefer a more casual setting, the bar next to the Opisso Museum room offers tapas, snacks, and drinks in an elegant space; you'll also find a billiard room with a pool table next to the restaurant.

Family-Friendliness

Families are welcome at Astoria Hotel, with Family Rooms accommodating up to four guests. Free cribs are provided for children two years old or under. While there aren't many specific amenities for children, the larger room options and the hotel's elevator make it convenient for families with strollers.

Very beautiful and the staff was great, but the room was so noisy. We could here everything in the halls, every door open and shut, and the traffic outside too. Also, the curtains were transparent and the was no way to block the windows for privacy or to keep the sunlight out in the morning. Read more

This hotel was historic and nice, but there were some issues with the elevator. While it wasn't a problem for us to take the stairs, I can see this being a potential issue for guests with mobility challenges. Overall, I enjoyed the historic charm of this hotel. Read more
