Karahé Beach Hotel, Manuel Antonio
Simple, no-frills hotel on the beach with an open-air restaurant and outdoor pool right on the sand
Overview
Kimkim's Take

- The property has direct, private Playa Espadilla access—a surprisingly unique trait in Manuel Antonio, as many accommodations aren't beachfront.
- Some units are on the hillside with ocean views, whereas others are a few steps from the beach, so your toes will hit the sand shortly after you leave your room.
- Karahé Beach is an area staple as one of the first hotels in Manuel Antonio and has been in business for over 40 years.
- The on-site restaurant/bar, outdoor swimming pool, and lush gardens are directly on the beach.
- You'll have opportunities to see sloths, monkeys, toucans, and iguanas on the hotel grounds.
- Some rooms are accessibility friendly.
- Not all rooms have ocean views, nor are they all set on the beach.
- The budget-friendly units sit atop a steep hill, which can be challenging to navigate for some.
- The busy main road cuts through the Karahé grounds, so you might need to cross the street to access some of the common areas.
Authenticity
Karahé Beach Hotel connects visitors to Manuel Antonio's natural beauty. Originally built in 1980 with villas in the mountains, the hotel has grown to include a restaurant, swimming pool, and lush gardens. Each room offers a different vibe. If you opt for one of the hillside villas, you'll enjoy a bit of jungle privacy (some) with incredible ocean views. If you'd rather stay beachfront, you can wake up to the sound of the waves and relax in the property's well-maintained gardens. You'll find regional marble and hardwood in the rooms and will likely spot local wildlife, such as capuchin monkeys and toucans.Location
Karahé Beach Hotel is one of the few properties directly on the area's primary beach, Playa Espadilla, so daily sunsets are a given. The tradeoff, however, is the main road cuts through the hotel, so many units require crossing a busy street to get to the pool, beach, and the on-site restaurant. Still, you'll be within walking distance of the beach and Manuel Antonio National Park. Reaching nearby restaurants and shops might require a taxi or a short drive due to the lack of sidewalks and hilly terrain.Rooms & Bathrooms
The no-frills rooms are bright and airy, each with a small private balcony or terrace with views of the beach or surrounding jungle. Standard rooms are on a reasonably steep hill, are pretty basic, and could use a refresh. We recommend upgrading to a hillside Villa or Villa Deluxe (if you're okay with crossing the road to the beach) or a superior Beach Front option. These have a much better feel with wood and stone decor, plus exceptional ocean views or direct beach access. Travelers with limited mobility will want to book rooms on the coastal side of the complex, as the rooms on the hillside require a steep climb.
Amenities
Karahé Beach Hotel has a moderately sized pool with an adjacent hot tub steps from Playa Espadilla. There isn't an on-site spa, but in-room beauty and massage treatments are available through a local partner. The all-day, open-air Canto Del Mar restaurant serves Costa Rican and Peruvian dishes with beach and garden views—a great spot to sip a drink while taking in the sunset. Daily breakfast is served here and is typically included in the room rate. Guests can enjoy poolside food and drinks from the full-service bar, and the hotel's proximity to the beach offers opportunities for surfing and other water activities.
Family-Friendliness
The hotel is very popular with families, largely because it's one of the few beachfront options in Manuel Antonio. Two children up to eight years old can stay for free in rooms occupied by their parents. Villas and Beach Front rooms are the best options, offering multiple beds for up to four travelers, including a crib on request. Most previous travelers with families have preferred to stay in rooms on the beachside half of the property.
Wildlife
You're likely to spot a wide range of Costa Rican wildlife on the grounds, though for your best chances, the more reclusive animals are sighted around the hillside villas. Travelers have come across sloths, monkeys, and toucans, to name a few, and the beachside pool often has a group of iguanas hanging out.

Hotel room smelled very musty the entire time, was missing basics like a coffee machine/tea and phone, and no outlets by the bed. The breakfast was good quality though minimal compared to some other stays. The overall best feature was location beach side, and the private beach seating with shade cover - this part was 5/5 in addition to very nice and accommodating staff.

This is a very basic hotel. Good for the location (beachfront) but that's about it. Clean but As basic as it gets. No frills. Even the safe inside the room was broken. We wanted to ask someone to come fix it and guess what - no phone in the room to contact front desk - have to walk all the way to the other side of the road to get someone.

The staff of the hotel helped to find out where the driver was.
They arranged for a driver who took us a few miles and connected us to a van who drove us to San Jose.
The driver of the van was an excellent driver! Read more
