Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in San José, Transfer to Fortuna

Arrive in La Fortuna and explore with your family!

Welcome to Costa Rica! Your flight lands in San José, the country's capital and its largest city. Upon arrival, your driver will be waiting to transport you to the town of La Fortuna, which serves as the gateway to Arenal Volcano National Park. The scenic drive takes approximately three hours, and once you've arrived and gotten settled at your hotel, you and the kids are free to start exploring!

Sitting at the base of the awe-inspiring Arenal volcano, Fortuna is an outdoor enthusiast's dream, with activities to suit all ages. You'll be staying at a local resort where your family can unwind after a long day of travel by visiting several hot and cold springs or enjoying a meal at one of their on-site restaurants.

If the kids need to burn some energy, you can also visit the Club Río Outdoor Center, located along the Río Arenal and offering tubing, kayaking, horseback riding, and more. Or, if you'd rather keep things low-key, you can take a gentle stroll around town, checking out local shops and the peaceful central park.

Day 2: Discover Arenal Volcano & La Fortuna Waterfall, Night Hike in the Forest

Hike around Arenal volcano and see La Fortuna waterfall with your family

The day begins with a guided walking tour of Arenal volcano. Rising more than 5,300 feet (1,633 m) above the town and countryside, this active stratovolcano dominates the landscape and, until recently, often had more than 40 eruptions per day. Visitors can't hike to the top, but there are several trails around the base. The trails are generally flat and not very strenuous, making them accessible for all ages and abilities.

During your hike, your guide will explain the region's history, share information on previous eruptions, and discuss the impact of the lava flow on the area. There are also several forested areas along the trail, and the kids should keep their eyes peeled for birds, monkeys, and other animals. Continue to La Fortuna Waterfall, a beautiful cascade that sits at a height of more than 230 feet (70 m). Learn about the rock formations and the history of the basalt columns that gave rise to this waterfall, and at the end of the trail you can all enjoy a refreshing dip in the fall's surrounding pools.

Tonight, see the rainforest from a different perspective with a guided nighttime forest hike. Alongside your experienced guide, you and your family will venture deep into the forest, equipped with headlamps to guide your way. Your guide will use a high-powered flashlight to illuminate the nocturnal creatures that call this region home and provide fascinating insights into their behaviors. Return to your hotel in time to rest up for tomorrow's adventures.

Day 3: Safari Float on the Río Peñas Blancas

Take a private safari float along the Río Penas Blancas

Get to know La Fortuna's river system today by taking a slow-paced float trip down the Río Peñas Blancas. Meet your guide after breakfast and, after a safety and equipment briefing, hop aboard your raft and head downriver. You'll have the chance to see some of the flora and fauna that banks the river, and you're quite likely to see wildlife such as monkeys, sloths, iguanas, and alligators. The kids might also catch a glimpse of the basilisk lizard, which can actually walk on water!

The tour is perfect for families with younger kids who can't walk far, offering plenty of photo ops and views of the surrounding countryside. The gentle waters make for a peaceful trip, with riders only having to occasionally paddle to avoid obstacles. Along the way, your guide, an experienced naturalist, will share their knowledge of the region's ecosystem and the importance of preserving it for future generations.

Day 4: Venado Caves, Transfer to the Gulf of Papagayo

Discover the natural beauty and pristine beaches of the Gulf of Papagayo

Your next destination is the Gulf of Papagayo, an exclusive destination located along the northwestern coast of Costa Rica in the province of Guanacaste. Known for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush tropical forests, this is a popular spot for snorkeling, diving, wildlife spotting, and sailing. Meet your driver after hotel checkout and start the trip, making a stop at Venado Caves along the way.

Created millions of years ago by underground water currents, Venado is located just outside of La Fortuna. Your guide will equip you and your family with the necessary gear, including helmets, headlamps, and gloves, and after a safety briefing, you'll climb, crawl, and slide your way through narrow passageways and caverns. See the incredible rock formations and underground ponds, and learn more about the geological and biological history of the caves. The kids may also get to see bats, insects, and other creatures that call the caves home.

From here, continue to the Gulf of Papagayo, arriving at your elegant, family-friendly resort located just steps from the beach. Get checked in, then you're free to spend the rest of the day at the resort's outdoor pool, take a sunset walk on the beach, or grab a bite to eat at one of the on-site restaurants.

Day 5: Diamante Eco Adventure Zipline Fun & Animal Sanctuary

Take a thrilling jungle zipline ride at Diamante Eco Adventure Park

Spend today at Diamante Eco Adventure Park, a coastal outdoor park offering thrilling jungle zipline excursions, an expansive animal sanctuary, and a botanical garden. Meet your guide and make your way to the park, where you'll start with some ziplining fun! Courses include a 1-mile (1.6 km) ride with ocean views, the thrilling 30-foot (9 m) free fall "Quick Jump," and a hanging bridge over live crocodiles. Families also have the option of riding simultaneously on dual lines, giving you the chance to share the experience.

Afterward, visit the park's animal sanctuary, where you can observe their various rescue animals and learn about their natural habitats and behaviors. See sloths, monkeys, pumas, and more as your experienced guides explain the importance of protecting the species that reside here. The sanctuary also includes a butterfly observatory, educational programs for the little ones, and a botanical garden that showcases a wide range of native plant species.
