Soho Boutique Castillo Santa Catalina, Málaga
Adults-only luxury accommodation built on the site of a 17th-century fortress
Overview
Pros
- You'll stay at a restored castle from the 17th century, with preserved stone arches and towers, though the structure itself is a newer build from 1923 in Arab Renaissance style.
- The outdoor dining terrace has some of the most beautiful sea views, and you can also relax on the terraced bar lounge.
- Enjoy private parking and personalized shuttles to take you down to the beach or around the city.
- Some rooms have historic architectural elements from the Arab Renaissance, such as curved entryways, columns, and wood-beamed ceilings.
- By the end of 2022, the new owners (acquired in 2021) hope to open a spa, gym, and swimming pool at the hotel.
- You'll compromise the exclusivity and incredible sea views for location, as the hotel's quite far from all the city's main attractions (about 25 minutes of walking).
Kimkim's Take
Authenticity
Though the hotel is in a building from 1923—designed to pay homage to the Arab Renaissance—it sits on the grounds of a Malacitana fortress from the 17th century. Some historic elements remain, including stone archways, drum towers, and mosaic flooring.Location
Hotel Castillo De Santa Catalina calls itself "Málaga's most exclusive hotel," and its private location adds to that allure. You can request personalized services during your stay, including car transfers to any city site. If you feel like walking, the beach is just 15 minutes away, though the start of the historic city center is about 25 minutes.Rooms & Bathrooms
All the rooms are bright and modern, though we recommend those with historic Arab architectural elements, including the deluxe double rooms, junior suites with sea views, and the two-bedroom suite. The others are still perfectly comfy but lack the hotel's design appeal. Bathrooms are big and clean, all with rainfall showerheads and some with charming vintage tiling.Other Highlights
Soho Boutique Hotels restored the property in 2021 and plan to open new facilities by the end of 2022, including a gym, spa, and swimming pool. You'll also find the El Castillo Restaurante onsite, which offers incredible outdoor dining with some of the best sea views in the city. Other highlights include a beautiful garden area, an outdoor terrace bar and lounge, and private parking.Like what you see?
