Eco-friendly beachfront reserve offering spacious accommodations, a treetop restaurant, and an on-site spa

Overview

Thala Beach Nature Reserve, nestled between Cairns and Port Douglas in Australia, offers an immersive eco-experience on its private property. This resort prides itself on its deluxe eco-accommodation options that blend sensitively with the natural landscape. You'll find yourself perfectly positioned to explore the local flora and fauna and enjoy views of the sunny beach and Coral Sea against a mountain backdrop.

Accommodation at Thala Beach Nature Reserve ranges from the intimate Sandpiper Suite, offering unobstructed sea views, to the Eucalypt Bungalows that allow you to experience the unique tropical forest in comfort and privacy. The Coral Sea Bungalows on the highest ridge of the resort's private headland also offer unobstructed sea views framed by the native Australian forest canopy. Larger groups or families can choose the Kingfisher Suite, a two-bedroom bungalow with outdoor and indoor living areas and a simple kitchenette. Interiors are spacious, light, and airy, drawing inspiration from the surroundings with wooden elements and natural furnishings.

For relaxation, visit the private Oak Beach, with pristine sand lined with coconut palms and sheoak trees. When you're in the mood for some pampering, head to the on-site Rejuvenate Spa for various treatments, including massages, facials, body scrubs, and wraps. For dining, the treetop Ospreys Restaurant offers local cuisine and panoramic views over the Great Barrier Reef. Dining options extend beyond the resort's main restaurant, with picnic baskets available for private dining anywhere on the grounds, and Herbies Beach Shack offers a casual beachfront venue for cocktails and canapes.

Interesting and unique, but far too isolated with not enough activity at the resort. Only one restaurant and food was average. Wait times long for meals and quite overpriced for what is offered. Couldn’t even get a cup of coffee without someone asking for our room number. Pool area and beach felt unkempt and zero activity or anything of interest. Transportation to port Douglas was late - we almost missed our planned tour - and very limited. We lucked out by grabbing an uber back from town... Read more

Couldn’t even get a cup of coffee without someone asking for our room number. Pool area and beach felt unkempt and zero activity or anything of interest. Transportation to port Douglas was late - we almost missed our planned tour - and very limited. We lucked out by grabbing an uber back from town one evening. Staff was helpful and tried their best, but perhaps a bit understaffed or maybe it was the time of year??

Authenticity & Character
Very interesting location. Plenty of nature. Many frogs, toads, and can hear much wildlife st night from your tree house/jungle hut. Walking at night, not for the feint of heart. Golf cart shuttles are available but allow for extra time.
Location
Too far from everything. Nothing offered on property.
Staff
Helpful, tried their best. Seemed a bit understaffed maybe???
Cleanliness & Comfort
Room was mostly clean. Pool area and beach both needed some attention/love.

BEAUTIFUL place to stay! It is out of the way and in its own space. They have a great restaurant with yummy dinners and breakfast! The rooms are individual cabins in the rainforest which was really wonderful and private. So relaxing and comfortable. They have miles of trails/tracks on the reserve. You want to be sure to have a day to just stay on the property! Read more
