5 Days in Germany - 5 Unique Itinerary Ideas

Five days in Germany is enough time to visit two to four destinations. You can train to Berlin, Dresden, Nuremberg, and Munich to see highlights like the Berlin Wall and picturesque old towns. Discover Berlin and Dresden's World War II history or tour them from a culinary and craft beer perspective. Those wanting relaxation in spa towns will enjoy Lake Constance and Baden-Baden, while travelers seeking a festive Christmas market experience should visit Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Dresden, and Berlin.

Make memories at the famous Bavarian fairytale-like castle of Neuschwanstein in the German Alps

1 Week in Germany - 5 Unique Itinerary Ideas

One week in Germany is enough time to visit three destinations at a comfortable pace. History buffs will appreciate tours of Nuremberg's World War II sites, while travelers keen on culinary experiences can sample local food and wine on tasting tours in Berlin and the Rhine Valley. Arts enthusiasts will enjoy a concert at Schloss Nymphenburg and a visit to Alte Pinakothek in Munich, and those seeking a rejuvenating journey can cruise around Reichenau Island by bike and soak in thermal pools in Baden-Baden.

Wander Bavaria's medieval streets of Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Siebers Tower and Kobolzell Gate amid half-timbered buildings

10 Days in Germany - 5 Unique Itinerary Ideas

Given Germany's size, you can visit at least four regions in 10 days. Active travelers will enjoy standup paddleboarding on Lake Constance and biking around Berlin, while history buffs will appreciate a Nuremberg World War II tour. Those keen on culinary experiences can take a Bavarian food and beer tour in Munich and sip riesling in Rudesheim. Travelers eager to embark on a multicountry trip can include an e-bike tour in the Czech Republic, an orchestra concert in Austria, or hiking in Switzerland.

Explore Central Europe by rental car and relish the drive over the Bastei Bridge in Saxon Switzerland National Park en route to Prague

2 Weeks in Germany - 5 Unique Itinerary Ideas

With two weeks in Germany, you can take advantage of its excellent train network to hop between the country's beautiful cities or stick to Southern Germany and explore historic towns and castles on a self-drive itinerary. Other options include a World War II-focused trip featuring Berlin, Nuremberg, Munich, and Prague, a summer road trip split between Germany's Romantic Road and Switzerland's mountain-backed towns, and a fast-paced Central Europe tour that combines five countries and seven cities.

Freiburg im Breisgau, on the southwest edge of Germany's Black Forest
How Many Days to Spend in Germany

Germany has a broad offering of experiences, from modern cities to medieval towns, fairy-tale castles and forests, and even beaches. Two weeks will allow you enough time to get to know the country well, though you can still get a lot from a shorter trip. One week allows for a German "sampler," and even in as little as five days, you can fit in a variety of sights.

Summer is an excellent time to explore charming towns in the Rhine valley
Best Time of Year to Visit Germany

Steeped in history, Germany is a beautiful year-round destination that melds cutting-edge cities, outdoor adventures, and distinct festivals celebrating everything from ski jumping to classical composers. Winter is best for minimal crowds, while the summer months—along with Oktoberfest and Christkindlmarkt—are major draws. Then, there are the two reliable shoulder seasons with mild temperatures and off-peak prices for exploring everything from spas in the Black Forest to dunes on the Baltic Sea.

Cairan had extensive knowledge & understanding of history, great presentation & was fantastic relating with our 14 yo Grandson who was with us.

Our tour to Dachau was a small group tour. The guide .was excellent (don't remember his name but he was American & played the trumpet). He delivered the information with compassion.

Our tour in Nuremberg of the old City & Nazi Rally Grounds was good. We were disappointed, however, because we very much wanted to see the courthouse where the trials were held, & it turned out not to be on our tour as we had expected.

Hotel Tuniberg

the issue I had with this hotel was the location, the staff was very nice, the food at the restaurant was very good, but the location was in the middle of nowhere, with only a gas station across the street. There was really nowhere to go after coming to the hotel for the night, Freiburg is a 15 minute drive away on the highway. The rooms were also very basic. They were clean, but had none of the typical hotel amenities. The bathroom was tiny, there was nowhere to put any toiletries and there were tiny towels and plastic cups (like a kids cup). The parking was also, as my husband said, "the most stressful part of driving each day" bc the parking garage/barn was very tight, need a person directing you so you don't hit anything. The people, however, were kind and the restaurant was good, there was just literally nothing to do there. We took a walk on a short path but it ended at a busy road. Bedding was good!

Burgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa

Oh my word, this gets 10 out of 5 stars, the best 24 hrs of my life, literally! They even let us check out at 3 instead of 12. The pool/spa was fantastic, I will dream of it for years. The views from the pool were spectacular. We were a bit early in the season so one of the trails we hoped to hike was not open and some of other restaurants were not either, but we found another hike, and areas to explore. The buffet was included and AMAZING. We did not have time to enjoy the "private movie screening" for our family bc we wanted to be outside/in the pool. This was the highlight of the trip, highly recommend the splurge. It is pricey but worth it. We had a view of the mountains/cow pastures on one side and lake Lucerne on the other. The amenities included snacks, champagne and a fridge full of beverages including wine. The ferry to Burgenstock is just across from the train station, at Pier 3, and the boat ride is very nice- and the funicular to take you to the restaurant is great also.

the second bed was basically a portable bed against middle of wall with no headboard which isn't very comfortable to read a book or sit in for any length of time, the head of the bed was up against a chair so we slept in it sideways so I could read a book at night, so my feet were hanging off the bed, would have been better if they at least put it against the wall but we didn't want to rearrange the furniture. the bathroom was nice though, as were the linens and amenities
