Best of Amed, Bali

On the east coast of Bali, Amed lies near a series of picturesque beaches, peaceful bays and fishing villages. The area’s big draw lies offshore, with some of Bali’s best snorkeling and diving spots reachable on short boat trips. Inland, the mountainous peaks offer many possibilities for trekking, and you can even climb up the highest volcano in Bali. Numerous resorts catering to all budgets make Amed an appealing place to base while exploring the many attractions nearby. 

Boat excursions from Amed take you out to prime snorkeling spots, which have hard and soft corals, sea turtles, blue starfish and other abundant marine life. There’s also an underwater temple as well as more recently carved sculptures, strategically placed to help create an artificial reef. Serious divers (and even snorkelers) can head to Tulamben to dive the Liberty, one of Bali’s best-known wreck dives. West of Amed, Pura Lempuyang is one of Bali’s most important Hindu temples, and it has a spectacular setting on the slopes of Mount Lempuyang. For something completely different, you can learn about the production of salt from seawater, a traditional livelihood in Amed going back many generations.
