What you'll do

After getting picked up from your La Fortuna hotel, you'll be brought to North Fields Coffee for your interactive farm tour and product tasting, starting with the nursery. You'll learn about the initial stages of the coffee plant lifecycle and be introduced to the delicate process of tending these infant plants, gaining an understanding of how they're nurtured into maturity. Following this, you'll move to the plantation itself to check out the many coffee trees spread across lush fields. You'll even have a view of Arenal Volcano in the distance, hopefully making an appearance from beneath its cloud cover.

The next phase of the process involves the harvest. You'll witness the skilled workers handpicking the ripe, red coffee cherries—the first critical step in obtaining high-quality beans. Once the cherries are collected, you'll listen to your guide as they lead you through the drying and roasting processes. Here you'll see the dried beans transform into the ones you recognize in your local coffee shop. You'll learn about the different roasting levels—from light to dark—and how each stage affects the flavor profile of the coffee. Next, you'll witness the grinding process, which prepares the roasted beans for brewing.

Of course, the highlight of the experience is the tasting. You'll be able to savor the fruits of the farmers' labor and appreciate the rich, distinct flavors of their specialty coffee. Brewed to perfection, each sip provides a deeper appreciation of the intricate journey from farm to cup.

Not only will you be immersed in coffee production, but you'll also gain insight into traditional Costa Rican culture. The farm is home to various animals and small crops of cacao and sugar cane, and similar to the coffee-making process, you'll learn all there is to know about traditionally growing and harvesting cacao to make chocolate and its many artisanal forms as well as pressing sugar cane. And because you'll also get to sit for a tasting of each product, you'll want to come with an appetite.

We went through Coffee and Chocolate tour - there was nothing mentioned about Sugar Cane - guess it wasnt that important for us, but would be nice to not include it from the beginning, so not create any expectations. Also, not sure if the pricing we paid was "extra". Read more

I've really enjoyed this tour and the family-owned company that provides them. The guide was incredible. We ate a lot of chocolate, drank a lot of coffee, and learned A LOT about coffee beans, chocolate production, and the history of locals.
It was amazing to know that the bread that we had during our tasting was made by owners wife and to meet the owner who is still working hard in the fields in his 80s.
