What you'll do

Get yourself to the lower station, a simple 30-minute walk or 10-minute bus drive from the Tromsø city center, and board one of the two gondolas, Seal and Bear. The cable car operates year-round from 9 am until 11:30 pm, and the viewing platform at the top is one of the best places to catch the midnight sun in summer and see the twirling lights of the aurora borealis in winter.

Step into your spacious gondola (each car can carry up to 28 passengers) and enjoy the pristine Norweigan landscape as you ascend 1,378 feet (420 m) in five minutes until you reach the viewing platform at the top of Storsteinen. The mountain offers incredible vantage points where you can gaze out over the city to the fjords and snowcapped peaks beyond. If you're lucky, you might even see paragliders taking off nearby. Spend as much time as you like discovering the views from the summit, and don't miss an opportunity for a warming hot cocoa and cinnamon bun at the nearby Fjellstua Café before making your way back down.

I'm a kimkim staff member and I was on a work trip when I experienced the Tromsø Cable Car. The cable car is off the island, across the bridge, on the mainland. I caught a Tromsø Taxi which was very easy - the walk would’ve been over 45 minutes while the taxi ride was 10-minutes.
The cable car made it to the top in about 5 minutes overlooking all of Tromsø and the surrounding areas of mountains, sea, fjord, and outskirt towns!

A cafe called the Fjellstua Café sits at the top where the cable car deposits you. The open-faced roast beef sandwich was great, especially sitting out on the open viewpoint tables.
There are dozens of trails all on top of the mountain that you can traverse to go get different perspectives miles away from the cable car. I explored little bits of a few different directions of trails and got some fantastic views.
The cable car ride down was just as easy, along with the Tromsø Taxi ride back to Tromsø Island!

Tips for future travelers

This activity is not walkable if you are staying in the center of Tromsø like most Travelers. You will need to catch a Tromsø Taxi or take the Svipper Bus (highly recommend, super convenient and always on time, with plenty of stops around Tromsø and a phone-application to buy tickets and guide you to the nearest stops).

Try to plan around the cruise ship tours. It was unbearably crowded the afternoon that I was there since it was a day that 2 cruise ships were docked in Tromso. If you can plan your visit on a day or at a time when there were not so many other visitors it would be more enjoyable

This was a good idea. It's close to the city and gives very good views of the fjord and surrounding mountains. You can watch the paragliders takeoff beside you!
