What you'll do
After a pickup at your hotel, you'll transfer to La Fortuna Waterfall trail entrance. This protected area is home to a large amount of wildlife, and you'll have the opportunity to observe some of it as you start making your way toward the waterfall (fellow travelers have spotted the vibrant toucan and even caught glimpses of sloths). The trail is only about 0.2 miles (300 m), featuring 530 steps and several comfortable rest areas where you can take a break and listen to your guide talk about the surrounding ecosystem and the geological history that shaped it.
Not far from the trailhead, you'll arrive at an observation deck offering elevated views of the waterfall plunging into the river below. After pausing to enjoy the views from the platform, start heading down the steps to get close to the waterfall at its base. The descent, while manageable, can be a bit of a workout, so take your time.
Approach the Arenal-Monteverde protected waterfall, rising to a height of more than 230 feet (70 m) before you. You'll have plenty of time to take photos at the scenic lookout point right in front of the cascade, and your guide will help you find the best angles. If you like, you'll also have about 40 minutes of free time to swim in the river flowing away from the waterfall, an area teeming with colorful fish, or closer to the base of the falls. Following your (optional) swim, you'll make your way back to the starting point in time for your return drive to your accommodation in La Fortuna.

Morning Bird-Watching Hike with Breakfast

There's a good reason for the early wake-up time: the park is home to a remarkable variety of birdlife, and most species are at their most active in the morning. You'll follow a naturalist guide through the park's different ecosystems, including a new tree-planting zone, open pastures, regenerating forests, and small streams. The mix of terrain allows for optimal bird viewing, and you'll likely spot the great kiskadee, tropical kingbirds, black-cheeked woodpeckers, and more. End the hike with a light breakfast of fresh tropical fruit and coffee.

This trek is recommended for those in decent physical shape and is open to anyone keen on immersing themselves in nature.

Nocturnal Rainforest Walk

As the sun goes down, you'll venture into the jungle, exploring this haven for plants, insects, reptiles, and other nocturnal animals. Highlights your guide will point out along the way include bats, spiders, sloths, snakes, and some of the reserve's many native frog species, including the brightly-colored poison dart frog, one of the planet's most poisonous frogs. Since the reserve is closed to most groups by nightfall, this is an exclusive opportunity to see how the rainforest transforms after dark.

We also did swim in the bottom of the falls -- and next to the falls, there is a smaller area where the water is more suitable to swim - we were literally swimming with the fish it was so clear. At one time we did see a Toucan so that was a bonus ;-). Read more
