What you'll do
After a 25-minute transfer from downtown Tromsø, you'll arrive at a wilderness center where the evening begins with a hearty dinner. You can choose between bacalao, a traditional Portuguese stew of salted cod (Norway and Portugal are linked via the codfish trade), or a vegetarian option, accompanied by hot drinks to keep you warm. This cozy meal sets the perfect stage for the main event.
After dinner, you'll gather inside a traditional Sámi tent, known as a lavvo, where you can enjoy an open fire while waiting for the northern lights to appear. Your guide will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about them, the local culture, or the surrounding wilderness. Then, when it's time, step outside, take your place in a chair, or recline on reindeer skins to scout the skies for the auroras. Although the lights' appearance can't be guaranteed, the serene darkness and the stories shared by your engaging guide certainly elevate the experience.
If the northern lights remain elusive, visiting the dog yard will certainly lift your spirits. You'll have the chance to meet playful puppies, an experience that adds an extra layer of joy to the evening. Available mostly during the winter months, this excursion is a must-do for anyone visiting Tromsø.
