What you'll do
Your adventure begins as you settle onto a sled, comfortably wrapped in warm blankets, while a reindeer gently pulls you through the serene, snowy landscape. Guided by experienced Sámi herders, you'll traverse the tranquil wilderness away from the bustle of city life. As you glide through the pristine snow, the lack of urban light pollution provides a clear, unobstructed view of the night sky. You might even glimpse the northern lights if luck is on your side. According to Sámi tradition, the northern lights have a sound—sit quietly and listen; perhaps you'll hear it!
After the peaceful sled ride, you'll have the unique opportunity to step into the reindeer enclosure. Here, you can participate in the daily feeding of a herd of 200 reindeer, getting an up-close look at these animals. The Sámi herders will guide you through this process, sharing their extensive knowledge and deep connection to these creatures. This hands-on experience allows you to appreciate the relationship between the Sámi people and their environment.
Once the reindeer are fed, you'll be invited to enjoy a hot meal inside a traditional Sámi tent. This meal isn't just about nourishment but also an immersion into Sámi culture. You'll get to taste traditional dishes, learn about Sámi artifacts, and listen to stories passed down through generations. If the auroral activity is particularly striking, the evening will be spent more outdoors to maximize your northern lights experience, slightly reducing the cultural segment.
This activity is a must-do for nature lovers and those seeking an authentic cultural exchange. It's available during the winter months when the northern lights are most visible, making it a perfect addition to a winter itinerary.
