What you'll do

You'll leave La Fortuna around 7:30 am and drive 1.5 hours to Juan Castro Blanco National Park. Note that good physical condition is required for this active excursion, which is considered moderately difficult and is not recommended for children or senior citizens.

Follow your naturalist guide along a 5-mile (8-km) trail. Be sure to keep your eyes open for wildlife like monkeys, sloths, and tropical birds — the landscape here runs the gamut from grassy plains to clay soil to volcanic rock, which makes for a wide array of ecosystems within a relatively small area.

The hike takes between three and four hours to complete. You'll begin by walking through a pasture area along the edge of a volcanic caldera on your way to a trio of volcanic lagoons formed many years ago inside a single crater. The highlight along this private trail is Hule Lagoon, a pristine lagoon occupying 136 acres (55 hectares) at the base of the Cerro Congo Volcano. (The name Laguna de Hule translates to "Rubber Lagoon.")

You'll keep up a good pace throughout the trek. But there are a few designated stops along the way where the guide will talk about the region's volcanic history, flora and fauna of the cloud forest, and more.

After visiting the lagoons, you'll descend back to the starting point, hiking through the rainforest and taking in scenic views. Break for lunch in the home of a Costa Rican family. Then return by car to La Fortuna, where the trip concludes.
