What you'll do

The day begins with an early morning transfer from La Fortuna, taking the better part of an hour as you drive through the scenic northern plains. You'll arrive at Tonjibe, the first town (locally referred to as a palenque). Together with the communities of Margarita and El Sol, the palenque is part of a larger territory of 7,396 acres (2,993 ha) and 1,000 inhabitants.

Follow your guide through the village, interacting with members of the tribe and hearing their dialect, Maleku Jaica. You'll learn about ancient burial practices, traditional palenque structures, and the intricacies of craftsmanship that sustain the community today. Discover the importance of cocoa in agriculture and learn how they make their clothing.

Continuing your exploration, a short 1,969-foot (600 m) path leads you into the forest, where you'll uncover the secrets of medicinal plants and trees the Maleku use daily, following in their ancestors' footsteps. Then, it'll be time to participate in activities such as archery, the ancient hunting method, using a traditional bow and arrow, and carving, giving you a hands-on appreciation for the skills involved. Upon returning to the main ranch, you'll attend a Maleku cultural demonstration featuring dance and music (you might even be welcomed onstage to join in!).

Cap off the day trip with a traditional Costa Rican lunch with a twist—you'll get to try mafuriseka, a fish-based dish steamed in banana leaves and accompanied by vegetables and fresh fruit juice. With full bellies, you'll make your way back to La Fortuna in the early afternoon.

My daughter (11) is into history and was very interested in learning about the local history and tradition. We were offered this private tour. It is nearly 4 hours tour - we learned about their cultural beliefs, then had a live demo session of making clothes from tree barks. We did some carvings, tried archery and finished the trip with a warm traditional home cooked meal. Read more

Only two in our group again. It was informative and we were able to pick up some lovely artwork for home. A walk through the jungle (wear bug repellent) to discuss the medicinal plants. Entertainment, which we got to take part in. We also shot arrows and had lunch. They very sweetly had prepared to pieces with our names on them which they gave to us. A lovely visit. Read more
