Azania Bungalows, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

4.7 (7 reviews) · Standard
Simple bungalows in tropical gardens near Playa Cocles, offering tropical gardens, a pool, and local cuisine

Overview

With just 11 traditional wood bungalows dotting the property, Azania offers a quiet stay near the beach. The bungalows are Caribbean-style with wooden floors, beds, and decor, plus A-frame ceilings, thatched roofs, and terraces with hammocks. The property is just steps from the northern end of Playa Cocles and includes amenities like an outdoor pool, Jacuzzi atop an artificial waterfall, and an open-air restaurant/bar.

Pros
  • The property is small and intimate, with just 11 private wood bungalows with thatched roofs, terraces with hammocks, and lofts.
  • You'll be just across the street from Playa Cocles, a beautiful beach perfect for sunbathing and people-watching.
  • Because Playa Cocles isn't the best for swimming, the property has an outdoor pool and coldwater Jacuzzi set atop an artificial waterfall.
Cons
  • The property feels a bit dated, and the bathrooms, in particular, could use some improvements.
  • The staff gets mixed reviews; some past guests said service was slow or staff members were rude.
  • Bugs can be a problem if guests leave windows open.

Authenticity

Azania Bungalows is a small resort with 11 wooden bungalows dotted around its property. The cabins have tall, A-frame ceilings with lofts, traditional wooden floors, furniture and accents, and thatched roofing. Although reasonably close together, the property's rich tropical garden offers privacy and Caribbean vibes.

Location

Azania is about as close to the ocean as you can get without being a beachfront hotel. Across the street is the sandy Playa Cocles, a regional favorite but not the best for swimming. The waves are strong, so it's better to lounge on the sand, splash on the shore, or watch the surfers. If you feel like exploring the area, just north of the property is the town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, and not too far south is the Jaguar Rescue Center.

Rooms & Bathrooms

All the bungalows follow the same layout, with a queen and twin bed on the lower floor and another twin bed in the loft, accessible by a ladder (great for older children). Each unit has traditional Caribbean features, including darkwood floors and bed frames, plus thatched palm roofing and a terrace with hammocks and seating. The balconies and bathrooms are spacious but outdated.

Wildlife

Past visitors have spotted sloths, agoutis, lizards, howler monkeys, toucans, parrots, and hummingbirds around the property. At night, the sound of wildlife can get loud, especially in the early morning hours. Sunrise is a great time to see wildlife in the gardens.

Amenities

There's a free-form swimming pool surrounded by lush vegetation, and a shady "Quincho"-style structure offers poolside drinks and snacks. A freshwater Jacuzzi connects to the main pool via a waterfall. It's not the best choice for travelers with limited mobility: all bungalows are accessed by steps.

Family-Friendliness

Children are welcome at the Azania Bungalows, and up to two children under six stay for free with their parents. Bungalows are large and can fit up to four people, so they're suitable for families with two children. However, no specific activities or amenities are offered for kids, nor is there a children's menu. The property's graveled paths are not stroller-friendly.

Other Highlights

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served at the Club House, a "Quincho"-style ranch building next to the swimming pool. The cuisine is made with local, freshly prepared ingredients using local cooking techniques. During the day, guests can enjoy light snacks like sandwiches, calamari, salads, or omelets, while dinner focuses on Argentine-inspired barbecue dishes and locally caught seafood. The bar in the restaurant specializes in Argentine wine and tropical cocktails.

The bungalows were a fantastic blend of jungle environment with modern accommodations. The rooms were very spacious and the beds comfortable. There were ceiling fans for each bed as well as mosquito nets, all of which were very much needed. The location was also fantastic, as it was close to several nice beachside restaurants in Cocles. If you wanted to go into Puerto Viejo, its a short taxi or bicycle ride. Breakfast was also good and quite filling Read more

Our favorite place - well in the top 2- the situation, the vibe of the area, the wild life on site - Poison Dart Frogs, 3 Toed Sloth, Green Macaws, Agouti.... Despite heavy warnings of security for the area, it is clear that if you do not go out as a rich tourist, you do not court unwanted attention. Lovely cocktails changed daily for happy hour, fantastic tours of 2ereserves close by. In a way a shame it was so close to the start of out tour as we loved the area and the feel of this place.
