Lagos Mare, Naxos

Charming family-run boutique hotel with sea-view rooms, a farm-to-table restaurant, and an outdoor pool

Overview

The family-owned Lagos Mare offers a more relaxed stay on Naxos from its quiet location just outside the village of Agios Prokopios. Just a short stroll from the popular Agios Prokopios Beach and a 10-minute drive to bustling Naxos Town, the small boutique hotel features 30 comfortable rooms with private balconies and neutral, beach-inspired decor, plus adjoining options for families and groups. Amenities include an outdoor pool, an al fresco bar, and a renowned small restaurant serving farm-to-table Naxian fare and a complimentary breakfast.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • You'll find yourself in a quieter setting at the edge of the village of Agios Prokopios and an easy 10-minute stroll from the beach.
  • The simple but comfortable rooms are furnished in a neutral, beachy style and include private balconies with views over the neighboring village or the Aegean Sea.
  • A small on-site restaurant serves Naxian and Anatolian-inspired dishes with island produce, meats, and cheeses, plus seafood caught by the family's own fishing boat.
  • There's plenty of seating around the outdoor pool and bar area, which overlooks manicured gardens and lawn games.
  • The easy bus to Naxos Town stops right outside the hotel.
Cons
  • The walk to the beach and the village is along rural roads with no sidewalks, and it can be difficult to navigate at night.
  • There's no elevator, so second-floor rooms aren't a good fit for those with limited mobility or families with strollers.

Authenticity

Lagos Mare opened in 2006, but its family history traces back to 1924, when Giannis Lagos arrived in Naxos from Smyrna. Three generations on, the Lagos family completed his dream of opening a small hotel, and you'll receive a warm welcome at the two-story, cubic-style property that sits at the edge of village life and rural countryside. The family's blend of Anatolian and Naxian roots extends to the menus at the on-site restaurant, where the produce, meats, cheeses, and herbs are sourced from island producers, and the seafood catch of the day is supplied by the family's fishing boat.

Location

The hotel sits on the outskirts of the village of Agios Prokopios, located roughly 3 miles (5 km) south of Naxos Town. Smaller and quieter than the island capital, this seaside village is popular for its eponymous beach, a stretch of golden sand that's considered one of the most beautiful on the island. You can walk to the beach in under 10 minutes (though it's along a street with no sidewalks), and it's a 5-minute stroll to the village's shops, restaurants, and cafés. Naxos Town is a 10-minute drive away, or you can hop on the local bus that stops just outside the hotel. You'll find free parking as well as EV chargers on-site.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The 30 air-conditioned rooms are furnished in a neutral, somewhat basic style, but a few details like curved doorways, geometric designs, and Aegean-inspired art tie them in with their surroundings. All include anatomic mattresses with premium linens, Nespresso machines, and private balconies. Bathrooms are modern and bright, stocked with luxury Korres toiletries, and most include walk-in showers. Options range from basic doubles to spacious suites with Jacuzzis, plus adjoining rooms for families or groups. Request one of the sea view rooms to get the most out of the setting.

Amenities

Guests tend to head straight for the hotel's medium-sized outdoor pool, surrounded by a terrace that leads to manicured green lawns and a giant chessboard. The Eastern Star Bar, located poolside, serves local beer, wine, and specialty cocktails. Overlooking the lawn and pool area, the hotel's 1924 restaurant offers all-day dining with a focus on local Naxian products and seafood (you should book ahead on busy weekends or holidays). The included breakfast buffet is served here and out on the adjacent terrace and continues the theme of island products and locally sourced ingredients.

Family-Friendliness

Families are welcome at Lagos Mare, with the first child under 12 staying free when sharing a room with parents. Baby cots and chairs are available, and the connection room options are ideal for larger groups. The hotel features a playground and outdoor games, including a fun human-sized chessboard, and a children's menu is available at the restaurant. Families should note that the walk to the beach is along narrow roads with no lighting or sidewalks, so it's not ideal for kids.

Both plus and minus here. Excellent free shuttle service to airport, town etc. Room was nice except shower leaked onto floor and had leaked for a long time considering the damage to door, wall and floor. They pretended not to know. Food was excellent. Buffet breakfast as well as made to order. Great bar service for drinks, espresso etc. No real restaurant for dinner. Basically ate in an extended lobby that opened to the pool. Nice but not fancy. Wonderful dinners. For me the worst part was... Read more

Maybe could have shuttled but most of us walked. Not good in the dark of night at any age.

A very nice hotel but its location was not great. Surrounded on two sides bu dirt parking lot and a short walk to the beach area. The walk could be anxious with virtually no sidewalk and traffic.
Oddly they had a Nespresso machine in the room with the pods but no cups, creamer or sugar. That was not a big problem as I easily went down to the breakfast area to get coffee for the room but other may not like it, Last the shower was not nearly as nice as in the other hotels. It was...

Very nice hotel that made you feel like you were on an island getaway! Nice staff, great breakfast in the morning. It’s nice that it’s in a quiet area, but it is a little farther from Agios Prokopios ( the closest beach town) than I would have preferred due to the lack of sidewalks on the route from the hotel to there. It is only about a 10 min walk but can feel longer since you have to be cautious about your walk until you get into the beach town with all the shops and restaurants. But in... Read more

But in general, not much sidewalks on this side of the island in this area at least, so that isn’t going to change much! Perhaps if we stayed slightly more central the hotel would have been noisier so who knows! Great hotel and service otherwise, just not the best location-wise.

There is NOT ONE negative thing I can say about this hotel.
Stunning views and clean accommodations. Walkable to the beach and some decent restaurants. Breakfast that was included was delicious, especially the coffee. The most warm, cheerful, accommodating, and wonderful staff ever! My favorites were Daphne at the front desk, Petros behind the bar, and Asteris a personal driver. They and the rest of the staff made our 4 days in Naxos even more unforgettable than it would have already been.
