Overview
Pros
- The property includes 15 acres set between the central Tortuguero lagoon and the Caribbean Sea, so there's easy access to both areas of water.
- You can enjoy your meals—which have a good amount of selection, including Westernized cuisine—in the open-air dining area. There's also a bar right on the lagoon and an on-site café.
- Relax in the lounge areas, both indoor and outdoor.
- You can join optional tours (including turtle tours in season) for an additional fee.
- Rooms feel like a standard hotel rather than a jungle bungalow, and bathrooms are outdated.
- There's no air-conditioning.
- Travel to and from the lodge can be tricky as the area is only accessible by boat or plane.
- Lacking certain amenities like a gym or a spa.
Kimkim's Take
Authenticity
Laguna Lodge sits on a narrow stretch of land (only 650 feet wide) between Tortuguero's central lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. Tall trees and tropical flowers dot the property's lawn and gardens. Top it off with sunrise or sunset at the bar overlooking the lagoon, and enjoy both local food and Westernized options at mealtimes (unique for Tortuguero accommodation, which typically doesn't have much food variety).Location
Set between the ocean and the lagoon, you get the best of both worlds here, as you have easy access to Tortuguero's central canal and the beach along the Caribbean Sea. The property is quite large, sitting on 15 acres that offer a home to many wildlife species, including birds and butterflies. Packages include tours to Tortuguero Town, the national park, and a nature walk.Rooms & Bathrooms
The rooms at Laguna Lodge are fairly basic and straightforward. All rooms are standard (no deluxe rooms or suites), but you have a choice of configurations: two queen beds, a double and a single, a queen and two singles, etc. Bathrooms are starting to show their age and could use a few updates.
Wildlife
Built on a narrow strip of land in Tortuguero National Park, Laguna Lodge offers travelers many opportunities to spot wildlife. The lagoon surrounding the hotel is home to several different types of turtles, including leatherback, Hawksbill, and green sea turtles that all nest on the nearby beaches. There are over 70 varieties of birds in the region which you can spot throughout the property. Laguna Lodge also has a Frog Pond and Butterfly Garden that you can explore at your leisure.
Amenities
Due to the remote location, Laguna Lodge doesn't have many luxury amenities like a spa or gym, as the property is more oriented toward enjoying the outdoors and exploring the surrounding area. The lodge does have two pools, with one that is shallow and better suited for families, while the other is an adult-only pool with a central lounge area and pool bar. You'll have access to basic WiFi and laundry on-site, a nice perk given the rural area. There are several wheelchair-accessible rooms, and the lodge has paved pathways throughout, but travelers with limited mobility should be aware that getting to and from the location can be challenging.
Family-Friendliness
Children of all ages are welcome at the lodge, and those under the age of four stay for free. There are no cots available, but the buffet does have options for children. The shallow family pool has been a favorite of previous travelers, along with the many outdoor activities that are offered as part of your package stay.
Other Highlights
Besides the lodge's superb location, you can enjoy a few other highlights. The restaurant is a spacious open-air dining area to enjoy your all-inclusive meals. Meals are buffet-style, but the local cuisine changes each day. Adults can grab a drink from the pool bar. Perhaps the biggest draw is that the lodge offers a diverse package of activities, allowing you to enjoy outings like boat tours, kayaking, and nature walks.
Sustainability
Laguna Lodge is one of the more established accommodations in Tortuguero, but they're only starting to adopt a more sustainable focus. Two current projects include installing solar water heaters in all cabins and using a bio-degradable process to reduce waste and turn it into sustainable energy for the property. The lodge hopes to complete these major initiatives in 2022, and it currently has a fleet of eco-friendly boats to help you get around Tortuguero.
