Parador de Aiguablava, Begur

Overview
Kimkim's Take
- The location is hard to beat, set atop a rugged peninsula overlooking the coastline. You'll enjoy incredible views of Costa Brava throughout the hotel—in rooms, common areas, restaurants, and the spa.
- You can access a very popular golden-sand beach on a scenic walk downhill from the Parador de Aiguablava for beach and water activities, as well as pick from a few dining options.
- Art lovers will appreciate the extensive collection of over 200 works by renowned Catalan artists, including Dalí and Miró, displayed throughout the hotel.
- Two restaurants serve delicious traditional Catalan cuisine with al fresco dining overlooking the sea.
- Refresh with a dip in the (unheated) seasonal outdoor pool, encircled by fragrant pines and sun loungers.
- For a little self-care, head to the spa, which has an indoor thermal, jetted pool, 15+ treatments and a spa circuit (you'll need to make a reservation for each), and a fitness center with a sauna—many rooms offering sea views.
- Though the hotel's location is essential to its appeal, it's a steep trek to the beach and back up to the hotel.
- Due to its remote location, a car is recommended if you want to explore the area or eat out.
- Past travelers have noted that while the buffet breakfast (not included in the room rate) is decent, it can get a little repetitive if you're booked in for a longer stay, as well, the Catalan cuisine offerings in the on-site restaurant have been rated as mediocre and pricey.
Authenticity
Like all of Spain's Paradores properties, Parador de Aiguablava is set in a historic and remote building. Originally a 1930s villa, it was converted into a hotel in the 1960s and, more recently, fully renovated. The open layout with large view-to-the-sea windows may be a nod to the '60s, while the whitewashed exterior walls and south-facing natural stone terrace lean to Mediterranean-style concepts. Contemporary interiors are both Spanish-designed and outfitted using mid-century modern furniture. You'll also find a collection of over 200 artworks by Catalan artists and regional delicacies served in both restaurants.Location
Given its remote clifftop location, a 15-minute drive outside Begur, Parador de Aiguablava is best visited with a rental. A 6-minute walk down a stone path with stairs and a railing will get you to the main—and public—beach at Aiguablava (Catalan for "blue water"). In Begur, you can explore historical sites like its medieval castle and hit up local shops and restaurants, or go farther afield to Girona, which is about an hour's car ride. The property also backs onto a few scenic trails, not to mention the coastal path on the beach's west side, leading to other villages and beaches (and views!).Rooms & Bathrooms
Rooms are modern, done in soothing tones of creams and pale gray, with wood-paneled accent walls and colorful mid-century modern furniture. Sliding glass doors open to a furnished balcony or terrace that overlooks the open sea or the bay. Bathrooms are equally chic, with classic amenities and complimentary toiletries. For more space and perks, grab a Suite. They come outfitted with a spa bath and a considerable terrace decked with large sunbeds and a small outdoor dining area.Amenities
In addition to the outdoor pool, Parador de Aiguablava's spa offers a host of treatments as well as a water circuit (book in advance), an indoor thermal pool, and a fitness center with sauna—most featuring water views. Two restaurants, including the summer-only Mar i Vent down by the beach and the in-house restaurant, serve Catalan cuisine, a lot of it locally sourced seafood (with minimal vegetarian options). Buffet breakfast is well received, though for a cost. Other amenities include free parking (a must for this location), EV charging stations, and several lounges with sleek fireplaces.Family-Friendliness
Parador de Aiguablava isn't particularly tailored for families. The focus on art, fine dining, and spa services caters primarily to adults. That said, some Doubles offer a single bed to accommodate three people, and the spa reserves 2 pm to 4 pm for children 7 and older.Like what you see?
