Sigló Hótel by Keahotels, Akureyri

5.0 (4 reviews) · Upscale
Classic harborfront hotel with scenic fjord views, outdoor hot tub, sauna, and a waterfront restaurant

Overview

Tucked along the harborfront in the charming, former fishing town of Siglufjörður, sits moss-colored Sigló Hótel—an understated elegant escape in Iceland's remote north. Guests are ideally placed just steps from the marina and the important Herring Era Museum, with nearby hiking trails and skiing opportunities available. Rooms are tastefully decorated in classic, plush furnishings using a color scheme of white, purple, and slate blue with lovely views that look over the colorful marina, fjord, and surrounding, typically snowcapped, mountains. Perks include the outdoor hot tub and sauna, both offering exceptional views, and the in-house Sunna Restaurant, which overlooks the marina.

Pros
  • You'll stay in a picturesque location with impressive views of the Siglufjörður fjord and surrounding mountains.
  • Rise early for a buffet breakfast at the hotel's Sunna Restaurant and watch the fishermen bring in your next fresh-caught meal.
  • Step into the outdoor stone hot tub and take in the marina, mountains, and fjord views—and, if you're lucky, the northern lights.
  • You're within steps of the Herring Era Museum, worth checking out to understand Siglufjörður's glory days as the "herring capital of the world."
  • Staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, notifying their guests when the aurora borealis makes an appearance.
  • If visiting during the winter, Siglö Hótel's ski shuttle makes hitting the slopes all the more convenient (for a cost).
Cons
  • Dinner portions at in-house Sunna Restaurant have been reported as being on the smaller side.

Authenticity

Beyond the painted wood-clad exterior, characteristic of many traditional Icelandic properties, Siglö Hótel's main appeal is its proximity to Northern Iceland's raw nature. The property borders Siglufjörður's small marina, with its in-ground stone hot tub mere feet from the water's edge—an excellent spot to take in the summer's midnight sun or watch the winter's northern lights dance. Siglö opened in 2015 under the Keahotels umbrella and marries classic Scandi design with understated romantic elements, like textured wallpaper, slate blue-painted walls, and gray and purple velvet furniture.

Location

Sigló Hótel rests on the east side of Siglufjörður, a narrow fjord from which Iceland's most northern town is named, overlooking the marina. The remote location, accessed by a series of tunnels (Héðinsfjarðargöng), is a great base for hiking, skiing, mountain horseback riding, and fishing. Formerly the "herring capital of the world," you'll be within minutes away from the Herring Era Museum (across the street), art galleries, cafés, and the Folk Music Centre, giving you a glimpse into Iceland's one-of-a-kind folk singing and music, all rooted in Viking culture.

Rooms & Bathrooms

There are six room types, accommodating up to three guests; all are spacious with wood floors and wood-paneled ceilings, and decorated with pale slate blue, purple, or taupes found in furnishings and/or on walls or patterned wallpaper (Suites). You'll find framed images highlighting the area's history and culture hung on walls, and you can expect plush beds, well-sized bathrooms with walk-in showers, Molton Brown toiletries, and soft robes and slippers—perfect for a visit to the hot tub or sauna. Most units include a window seat, a cozy spot to look over the harbor area, mountains, or fjord. Upgrade to a Suite for added space, an extra seating area, and a balcony.

Amenities

Unwind after a day of adventure with a soak in the outdoor hot tub or a session in the sauna with scenic views of the surrounding mountains and fjord—a true Icelandic experience. Order a cocktail or hot beverage from the lounge bar and pull up a fireside chair to enjoy the marina views. Sunna Restaurant serves Icelandic cuisine and an included-in-the-room-rate buffet breakfast with pretty views over the marina (tip: rise early to watch the fishing community bring in the day's catch).

Family-Friendliness

Sigló Hótel's Triple Room sleeps three guests, while all others accommodate up to two. Depending on the room type booked, cots and extra beds can be brought into a unit for a charge.

Very VERY nice hotel in the very North of Iceland. Siglufjordur was very scenic and beautiful. While this comment may seem bland, it is the best summation of the hotel:
"This was an excellent hotel and would I strongly recommend staying there"

Authenticity & Character
Beautiful location right on the water.
Location
If for no other reason, it is an excellent location for Aurora viewing. Head North through two short tunnels and there is a spot with parking that was the most ideal location to view Aurora.
Staff
Came back very late (2:30am) after Aurora viewing and was hungry. The nice night staff person provided a small bowl of bar peanuts as a snack. This staff service was deeply appreciated.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Unquestioned cleanliness.
