Skuggi Hotel Reykjavík by Keahotels, Reykjavík

Modern and simple hotel with monochrome rooms, plus a bar, lounge, and parking lot

Overview

Skuggi is a modern hotel that takes its inspiration from Icelandic photographer Ragnar Axelsson, known for his black-and-white photos of the country's landscapes and people. The hotel's location close to downtown Reykjavík allows you to discover different aspects of Icelandic culture, as sites like the Reykjavík Art Museum Kjarvalsstaðir, the shopping street of Laugavegur, and Iceland's biggest church of Hallgrímskirkja are all within 15-20 minutes walking. The surrounding neighborhood offers a mix of cafés, restaurants, and galleries, so this is a great base for you to explore the city.

The style of the hotel is clean, modern, and monochrome. The 100 rooms are all straight lines and black, white, and gray tones. The layouts and amenities are simple, with electric kettles and TVs but no refrigerators or air conditioning. The windows do open, though, so you can cool the room off on your own. Rooms differ primarily in size, and since the Single and Double for Single Use can feel tight, opt for the Double, Twin, or Superior for more space. Bathrooms offer rainfall shower heads, and the Superior includes robes and slippers.

Common facilities include a bar, lounge, and dining area, where you can have breakfast. The hotel also has a parking lot, which is a plus for anyone renting a car to explore the Golden Circle or other areas of Iceland.

Rooms are tiny-I wasn't even able to sit at the desk AND open the door to the bathroom at the same time.
Also, the room was never cleaned. I stayed 3 nites and never did a housekeeper visit the room or even drop off fresh towels.
Breakfast buffet is fine although I would have liked for it to have been available a bit earlier (say 6 or 6:30am instead of 7am).
