Ashley Nguyen

I was born and grown in Hanoi - the capital of Vietnam. I have always been interested in travel and discovering other cultures and places. When I was a little girl, I dreamed of being a tour guide when I get older. Now I am a travel consultant— not exactly the same thing, but very close! Being a consultant has also let me discover more places and help people to organize trips not only in Vietnam but also in Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand, the countries which I am continuously exploring and feel a big passion for.
I am feeling happy to share with my clients my knowledge and experience of traveling and helping them to enjoy Indochina's beautiful landscapes, nice & friendly local people, delicious cuisine, rich culture, and history.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"We offer a wide range of trips from relaxing beach outbreaks to trekking in the jungles throughout Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Laos. Our tour types include, but are not limited to:
- Classic and culture tours
- Family vacations
- Honeymoon trips
- Adventure tours
- Foodie tours
- Wellness
- Day trips and excursions
- MICE"

How did you get involved in travel?

"I wanted to be involved in travel since I was a child when I dreamed to become a tour guide. But one day, when I was traveling with my best friend to Da Nang, I was responsible for organizing our trip. At that time, I realized that I would love to become a Travel Consultant. I realized that I have a passion for making the entire holiday and being more involved in the organization process. And I still could meet with my clients and share with them my experience and listen to their travel stories.
Four years since the first time, I worked as a Travel Consultant, my clients are always happy when arranging services with me from the first time I contacted them until when they're back home. "

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"It was the first time I traveled to Sapa in 2017, the mountain region of Northern Vietnam. At that time it hasn't been a hot tourist spot and all the infrastructure was under construction. Many roads and hotels were not in good condition yet. I stayed in a hotel with a central location, based on the recommendations on the internet. It was right in the middle of the construction and far from the villages. Each day I had to travel a lot to visit beautiful places and get far from the dust of construction. I still enjoyed the trip, but it was the time when I realized how important it is to make a deeper search before the trip and get information from one who has first-hand knowledge. It was the first time I realized how important a travel consultant's work is, and I always remember this experience as a motivation and inspiration for me to serve my clients to make sure their travel experience will be smooth and joyful. We especially appreciated all of the accommodations that Ashley selected for us, and her handling the myriad travel logistics required to fit all of that into a three week tour. It was so wonderful to get to meet Ashley in Hanoi at the end of our trip so we could provide feedback, reminisce over the many highlights, and thank her in person for the excellent work she did on our behalf. We highly recommend Ashley's services should you choose to travel in her areas of expertise.

Hotel Reviews
Mu Cang Chai Ecolodge
Mu Cang Chai

We had a pleasant but cold stay at Mu Cang Chai Ecolodge. The accommodations were charming and the hosts were very friendly and attentive to our needs, but the thin walls on our room were a big challenge for the cold front that brought temperatures down to the mid single digits. We would recommend a stay here, but be prepared if the weather turns cold!

Le Champ Tu Le Resort Hot Spring and Spa

Le Champ was one of the unexpected highlights of our trip. The location is magical, and it was such a delight to soak in the hot springs after a long day of travel. Extra points for having a beautiful cave to explore right on the resort grounds! We wish we had more time to enjoy this wonderful facility.

Sin Chai Ecolodge

We loved this beautiful little resort on the outskirts of Sapa! The grounds and rooms are immaculate, the views are lovely and the food was terrific. We especially appreciated being outside the craziness that is Sapa town. Highly recommended!

Hue Ecolodge

We had a nice but brief stay at the Hue Ecolodge. The grounds were immaculate, the staff quite friendly, and the food was very good. We had a busy itinerary and poor weather, so didn't take advantage of the on-site amenities like the pool and spa, nor did we have a chance to explore the neighborhood. But as a place to spend a night it met our needs just fine.

Homestay Bac Ha

We had a delightful homestay during our one night in Bac Ha. The grounds are pretty, the views are nice and the rooms were quite comfortable. We especially appreciate how they went out of their way to meet our food needs, driving us to a "tourist-friendly" restaurant for lunch and cooking us a delicious (and HUGE) dinner. We lingered around the dinner table late into the night getting to know our hosts using Google translate.

Chay Lap Farmstay
Phong Nha

We had a delightful stay at the Chay Lap Farmstay. We loved the fact that the property is out in the country, away from the rapidly gentrifying Phong Nha town. We took advantage of the free bicycle rental to ride around the area, and the free kayak rental to escape the heat of the day out on the river. We also rented their e-bikes for a day at a very reasonable rate to explore the area. (A visit to Paradise Cave and a ride on the 'ferry' into town are both must-dos!) The Farmstay was an excellent place from which to see the amazing Phong Nha Ke Bang area.

Cozy An Boutique Hotel Hoian
Hoi An

We had a very nice 3-night stay at the Cozy An. We appreciated that it was in a quieter part of town while being close enough for us to walk to the more touristy areas. The rooms were nice, with a small balcony, and the food in the restaurant was plentiful and delicious. We took advantage of the free use of their bicycles to ride around town and ride out to the beach. We appreciated the one on one time we received from the concierge, and all her recommendations for what to see and where to shop. While in the end we didn't agree with all her assessments, they gave us a great place to start. We would definitely recommend staying here.

Day Trip to Ba Vi Countryside & Cooking Class
Day Trip to Ba Vi Countryside & Cooking Class
Hanoi

We spent our first full day in Vietnam on this tour of the Ba Vi. It was a nice introduction to Vietnam. The highlights of this tour were getting to speak with a former north Vietnam soldier about his experience during the American war and his perspectives on his country and relations with the US today, and the AMAZING lunch we had. However, the cooking class was a little disappointing - we were taught to make wraps for amazing spring rolls and got to make a salad, but the food was mostly prepped in advance and we didn't do any actual cooking. Also disappointing was the bike ride in the countryside, which was much shorter than we would have liked. Relative to some of the awesome days to come this tour was fine, just not one of the highlights.

Immerse in the Nature - Tu Le - Khau Pha Pass - Mu Cang Chai
Mu Cang Chai

The drive from Tu Le to Mu Cang Chai over the Khau Pha Pass was quite beautiful. Unfortunately, the March weather was hazy and overcast, so the views were not quite as lovely as they likely are at other times of the year. Once in Mu Cang Chai we had a tasty lunch and then headed into the hills for a walk through rice fields and a local village. We had a delightful encounter with a group of older Hmong women, from whom we bought textiles and crafts. After the long drive we were glad to stretch our legs and have a first person encounter with the countryside.

Half Day Sapa Village Hike
Half Day Sapa Village Hike
Sapa

The drive from Mu Cang Chai to Sapa was long and winding. There were many sights along the way, though low clouds and hazy conditions detracted from some of the scenic beauty. We had a bit of trouble finding a place to stop for lunch, but in the end found a small restaurant that met our needs. We drove through the heart of the tourist area in Sapa town, getting enough of a sense for the place to be glad we were staying outside of town. We ended the day by walking from the edge of Sapa town to our homestay in the village of Sin Chai, which took about 90 minutes. It was a nice walk, but much less trekking than we had been led to believe. This was really more of a travel day than an activity day.

Hoi An

Our street food tour of Hoi An was an unexpected delight! After traveling for 3 weeks in vans and on bicycle it was such a delight to zip through the streets like a local on the back of a scooter. Our guide was soft spoken but informative, and he brought us to a nice mix of well-known and back alley food carts and restaurants. We got to try many kinds of foods. While not all were to our liking, we appreciated the opportunity to try them out. This was a great way to spend an evening in Hoi An.

Trek to Lech Dzao & Thanh Kim Villages & School Visit
Trek to Lech Dzao & Thanh Kim Villages & School Visit
Sapa

Today's activity was the first for our highlight reel. The trek down from Sapa town through Cat Cat village and up into the hill villages was excellent. The route took us through cultivated fields, along jungle paths above a river, and into small villages where we could interact with the locals. The weather was cooperative - the haze even cleared a bit, allowing us to see the tall mountains across the valley - and it was great to have a day without car travel. We especially enjoyed our encounters with the local artists and artisans who produce the beautiful indigo-dyed batiks, embroidered clothing, incense, and other crafts.

Visit Bac Ha market (open only Sunday)
Vietnam

Our time in Bac Ha was a bit mixed. After the morning drive from Sapa - in part along the Chinese border - we arrived in Bac Ha for lunch and then a trek into the hills near our homestay. It was interesting to see another mountainous landscape, though this trek lacked the interactions with local we had on previous treks. On Sunday we visited the famed Bac Ha market, which truly was an experience. It was a delight to see a bustling market whose focus was more on meeting the needs of locals than tourists. So many colors, sounds, smells and tastes - a true sensory delight! After market we had lunch at a roadside buffet restaurant that clearly was not geared towards tourists. The food was a little less beautiful than we'd seen elsewhere, but just as delicious. Then it was time for the long drive back to Hanoi.

Transport
Our driver was rather aggressive, passing other vehicles on narrow winding roads at times that didn't seem necessary or productive. It made some in our party feel uncomfortable. The van itself was adequate, though became uncomfortable after an extended time. We rode in newer, more comfortable versions of the same vehicle later in our trip - it would have been nice to have the nicer vehicle at this time, given the hours we spent on this part of our tour
Tu Lan Experience Tour

Our caving experience with Oxalis was another trip highlight. We loved the physical activity, especially walking through the village to take in the sights, hiking through the mud in the rain, exploring caves with a headlamp, and swimming through the second cave. We had a great guide and an excellent cohort of fellow travelers to keep us company. The lunch provided on the trail, under a tent in the rain, was amazing considering the conditions it was served under. The only constructive criticism is that we would have liked more information in advance regarding what to bring with us and what clothing to wear. We were given the option of using our own footwear or the boots they provided and didn't understand the options well enough to make an informed decision. (Using their boots - assuming you can find ones that fit - is the clear correct choice.) Also, considering the weather, it would have been nice to have warmer clothing to put on when we stopped for lunch - a wool hat in our dry bag would have made a big difference.

Dinner at Ngoc Son Residency
Dinner at Ngoc Son Residency
Hue

We had a lovely dinner at the home of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Suong. It was very interesting to learn about the history of Hue and the Nguyen dynasty from an expert of that history. We were expecting a group dinner, and were pleasantly surprised that the table was set for only our host and the three of us. The food prepared by the host's 80+ year old mother was AWESOME, both in flavor and presentation. It was a meal we won't soon forget.

Deluxe Hue Sightseeing Full Day Tour - Join tour
Deluxe Hue Sightseeing Full Day Tour - Join tour
Hue

Of all the activities on our trip this one was our least favorite. In general we don't like packaged, pre-defined tours due to their impersonal nature and lack of autonomy, and this tour met our worst stereotypes. There were only 8 of us on the tour, but the jam-packed itinerary left no room for flexibility or meeting the particular needs of group members. Our guide was a lovely man, but he had marginal English skills. He had lots of information he wished to share with us, and it often felt like he was trying to force-feed it to us. It took a lot of energy to understand what he was trying to communicate - and after the first hour or so we stopped listening. We loved the imperial city, but didn't have the opportunity to explore it on our own terms. We liked seeing the pagoda and the tombs, but again would have appreciated more time to just see it at our pace. The lunch was a highlight for us, as the home restaurant had beautiful grounds and delicious food, but it was offset by the stop at the market (unnecessary) and the incense and hat making workshop (read: tourist store). In the end we mostly just felt tired and frustrated.

The full day Khao Yai National Park tour was a pleasant experience. We did a nice hike through the jungle but did not have the luck to see elephants, which was a bit disappointing. However, I understand that these are wild animals and sightings aren't guaranteed. In retrospect, it might have been nice to have the option to visit another park with possibly better opportunities to see elephants, but the one we visited was still enjoyable.

Thank you Ashley/ you gave us a brilliant service. You were always there for us- very quick to respond- and I think I have been demanding- as I always get anxious- plus I am fussy- so THANKYOU!!!

We were really well looked after though the whole trip- with Ashley always checking in- and the guides- always there and on time.

The guides.
Eddie- no. 1 in Bangkok / Kanchanaburi- He was PERFECT. The loveliest person/ caring- knowledgable, reliable- great values- and funny!! He made us laugh a lot. We felt like friends at the end. We were lucky to have him. He researched every activity- and always told us what to expect on timings- accurately- and gave us interesting facts. He could answer every question. We missed him once we said goodbye!

After Eddie- they were all nice people- the best ones were the man guide who helped us at Chaing Mai airport to go to Krabi- I don’t know his name- but he was really efficient.
Also the lady who helped from The Tubaak Boutique hotel to Krabi airport. A lovely lady/ who helped with interesting facts.
All the others were fine-
The man whom was our guide in Chaing Mai- for the Ling neck tribe and waterfalls- was nice- but his English and Knowledge was poor- so he wasn’t able to help with any information- or understand our questions. He was nice though- and fun- so it was ok- but just so you know- it’s better when they know about the destinations- and can speak English to explain.
( though I am bad for not understanding Thai!!!!)

Regarding Hotels.
1. Eastin Grand Sathorn- FANTASTIC! Great room, great location- fabulous staff, perfect room👏👏
2. U Inchantree
This was ok- nothing special- but I think cheaper- do value for money good. We were busy here- so just a base- so it was ok. The grounds were pretty- but no where near enough loungers to relax on outside/ after a busy day- so we sat inside/ which is a waste of the lovely garden.
3. Na Nirand Romantic in Chaing Mai/ Wow Wow and WOW! my favourite EVER hotel- what a fabulous choice. I think to balance our budget- it was a great way to spend our money/ and made sense that the previous hotel was less good- it made it really worth it- they treated us as we were in our honeymoon. I never wanted to leave!!!
4. the Tubkaak Krabi- also lovely- great location- wonderful staff- especially Hana in the restaurant.
5. the Montien Riverside. My least favourite/ a little ‘tired’ ( we say this for- old/ out dated) And the location not as good. This is my fault- not Kim Kim because I asked them to change from staying in the Eastin Grand again! But it didn’t ruin our holiday/ it was still nice.

The activities were all brilliant.
My favourites were the Temples day inBangkok , the Erawan national park, the Train and floating markets. The Ekephant sanctuary in Chaing Mai and the 4 Islands speed Boat in Krabi.

This trip had almost 100% success. Locations of hotels, great guides, timely transportation, tour destinations and overall quality for the money were right on. Considering the part of the world and the number of flights due to the destinations that we wanted to see, Ashley did a great job of advising and arranging suitable flights and appropriate timeframes, all of which were met with the scheduled transport services. Ashley did an outstanding job creating an itinerary that met our desires for our first trip to Vietnam. We appreciated that there was a lot of back and forth during the planning with questions which were answered promptly and effectively. From the time we arrived in Hanoi until our farewell in Da Nang, everything that was planned was carried out efficiently. Every transfer from airport to hotel, or hotel to boat or airport, happened exactly on schedule. The greatest source of stress in a trip is transfers, especially when in a country that is not familiar. KimKim (Realistic Asia) arranged everything for us, selecting local tour companies, and all went smoothly. The greatest joy of travel is to be immersed in the culture of the destination. The guides that KimKim selected for our trip were excellent and exceeded our high expectations. We were met in Hanoi Airport by Haley , who met our delayed flight with a smile and delivered us by private vehicle to Hanoi Pearl Hotel. Along the way, she helped introduce us the ways of Hanoi. Our first morning in Hanoi, we had a free day, and found a cooking class on our own. The next day, we were met by Sunny, a guide with Realistic Asia, who conducted a private tour of the Hanoi country side and farms by a 1970 Russian jeep. Ashley suggested the Water Puppet show, which was excellent. The following day, we were met by Dat, a guide of Realistic Asia, and his driver, for our trip to Ha Long Bay, first for the scenic seaplane flight (recommended by Ashley), then we boarded the Orchid Trendy cruise ship for an overnight trip to the bay and the caves at Cat Ba Island. Dat met us upon our return for a drive back to Hanoi Airport. Since we had time before our flight, Dat offered to show us an interest of our choice. We chose the Museum of Ethnology, an amazing place to learn of the 53 ethnic groups of Vietnam. Dat provided in-depth information, better than a museum tour guide. He then delivered us to Hanoi airport for our flight to Hue, where we were met by Trinh, of Realistic Asia, and her driver, who delivered us to the Pilgrimage Village resort, outside of the city. The next morning, Trinh guided us around the Citadel, the Imperial Palace the back streets of Hue, and a river tour on a Dragon Boat. That evening, we were dinner guests at Ngoc Son Residency, a special place that is not available outside of KimKim/Realistic Asia. The next day, we were met by Laura (Phuc) of Realistic Asia for our drive to Hoi An, where we spent the afternoon touring the city on foot. The next day, we enjoyed a private Vespa tour of the country side with Vespa Adventures, suggested by Ashley. In the evening, we attended the Teh Dar show in the Bamboo Theater, suggested by Ashley. It was an amazing acrobatic and musical depiction of tribal highland Vietnam birth, life and death. On our last day, the driver delivered us to Da Nang airport, where our KimKim tour was finished. In summary, KimKim/Ashley did an excellent job planning our trip, and procured the guide services that provided guides that were outstanding in every way. They adapted their tours around our requests wherever possible. They spoke excellent English, and we thoroughly enjoyed their company, in addition to their knowledge of the culture, food, and history of Vietnam overall, and specifically the locale that we experienced. The suggested extra experiences (water puppets, scenic plane, Ngoc Son dinner, Teh Dar show) added to our unique experience. We would not have been immersed in Vietnam as thoroughly as we were, if not for Ashley and KimKim. Thank you.
