Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in The Amazon
Welcome to the Amazon jungle, a magical and mystical world that covers nearly one third of Colombia's landscape. Today you will take a flight from Bogotá to Leticia, where a representative from your hotel will be waiting to bring you on your Amazon adventure.
When you arrive at Leticia's airport, you'll transfer to a private boat and head down the Amazon River to your accommodations. You'll stay in an upscale, eco-friendly guesthouse dedicated to the conservation of the rainforest and local communities. While this means there will be some restrictions for guests, such as limited hours for electricity, it's all part of the natural Amazon experience. You'll have the option to stay in a treehouse, where you can take in amazing views of the Amazon from the tops of the trees.
Relax in the rainforest tonight as you enjoy a delicious dinner prepared with local ingredients and customs. Afterwards, take a nighttime walk with a local guide to soak in the sounds of the Amazon after dark.
Day 2: Artisan Community - Mocagua Island - Peruvian Coast
Today will give you the chance to experience different aspects of the Amazon. Wake up at dawn to go bird-watching with a local guide and see how many of the 1500 species of birds in the Amazon you can identify.
After breakfast, you will head out to the artisan community of Macedonia, where woodcarvers produce a variety of redwood objects and artisans create baskets and jewelry.
You'll return to the lodge for lunch and then set out for the island of Mocagua, which has an inland lake and unique flora and fauna, such as Victoria amazonica, giant water lilies that can grow to be 10 feet in diameter! Continue on through the canals of the Amazon River to the Peruvian coast, where you can spot pink dolphins, which are found only in the Amazon.
You will return to the lodge for dinner, where you'll have the chance to help prepare a local dish of fish wrapped in leaves and seasoned with peppers only found in this region. You will spend the night at the lodge.
Chat with a local specialist who can help organize your trip.
Day 3: Puerto Nariño - Lake Tarapoto
You'll start the day with a visit to the Amazonian village of Puerto Nariño. This peaceful, spotless village is known as the most eco-friendly place in Colombia and is home to indigenous Tikuna, Cocoma, and Yagua peoples. This pedestrian village has no cars or motorcycles, so you can wander around peacefully by foot to see all that it has to offer.
You will then take a 90-minute boat ride along the Amazon River to Lake Tarapoto, where you can take a dip in the clear waters of this protected wetland. Lake Tarapoto is home to pink dolphins, manatees, and the large water lilies, Victoria Amazonica, among other flora and fauna.
You'll end the day back at your hotel, where you can enjoy a wonderful dinner of local dishes and flavors.
Day 4: Birdwatching & Shaman Adventure - Fly to Bogotá
This morning will begin with breakfast at the lodge, followed by a bird-watching excursion with a local guide.
You will then go on to meet a shaman, a traditional healer, who will introduce you to the science of medicinal plants and provide knowledge that goes back thousands of years.
In the afternoon, you'll return to Leticia and then fly back to Bogotá. Thank you for visiting the Amazon of Colombia!
