Hotel Presidente San Jose City Center
San José

The rooms were comfortable and the rooftop dining area was nice. The location is right in the heart of the city, which in San Jose means we had to be a little careful. The streets essentially roll up by around 8-9pm and there is not a soul in sight. We have been told that it isn't very safe to walk around at night in the city and that was apparent to us in this area. This means that if you don't want to be hungry at night, make sure to eat a full dinner early on as there is no where nearby to get food and the hotel only offers $3 bags of peanuts. The free breakfast in the morning, however, was delicious with a large selection. The fact that everything around the hotel closes so early also makes it difficult for smokers. Since smoking is not allowed anywhere on the premises my husband stepped out front at night to smoke a cigarette, and the gate promptly locked behind him (gate was not accessible with the hotel key). After about 5 minutes, the gate was opened for him, but during this time he did start to get heckled by an aggressive homeless man. The only entrance/exit to the hotel essentially leads right into the street so it's good to be careful when leaving the hotel grounds.

This is where we saw the majority of wildlife during our stay. The grounds are spread out and lovely with tons of beautiful vegetation, and the rooms were clean and comfortable. Howler monkeys and iguana were abundant. Our guide for being transported via boat as well as the boat tours was Elias, and he was amazing and also very helpful when we needed to modify our plans slightly. Bismark at the front desk was also very helpful and friendly. They keep the bar running from 10am - 10pm and the large water-facing gazebo as a designated smoking area was appreciated. Being that we were in the middle of the jungle, the comfort and cleanliness of the rooms exceeded my expectations. There is no AC but the temperature was perfect the whole time and I truly didn't even notice. There are also mosquito screens rather than windows, but I still felt like I had enough privacy, plus the screens allowed us to hear all the jungle noises! I had a lot of fun just walking the nature trail and looking for (and finding) wildlife. The grounds were very relaxing. The tap water here is not for drinking but there is a place to fill up water bottles toward the entrance. The food was better than I expected. It is not out of this world or anything, but it is more than adequate. It is offered buffet style (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). We sat at assigned tables in small groups, but the tables were big enough that I didn't feel crowded. Also, the time window that meals are offered is large enough that it was rare for everyone at a given table were all eating at the same time. It is best to go outside toward the bar/restaurant for a good WiFi connection, if needed. I believe a lot of these lodges in Tortuguero (Pachira, Evergreen) all have the exact same setup and function essentially the same. I would definitely recommend them for staying somewhere that feels like 'the jungle' but doesn't sacrifice comfort.

The restaurant here is perhaps the most beautiful place I've ever eaten (beautiful jungle view) and I am still thinking about how good the seafood soup was weeks later. We wanted to see as much as possible on this trip and we feel like we got to see a lot of different places. Getting to these different places wasn't easy. My wife gets car sick and she really had a rough time on the roads. If I could do it again I would have considered flying from place to place when possible. The drive times were all longer than we expected. Most roads were paved but not all. And some roads had many potholes. Even when paved the winding roads made the drives feel extra long. Fortunately our drivers were one of the highlights of our trip. They were all personable and professional. They were excellent drivers and handled the challenging road conditions like true pro's. They were very hospitable. They answered our questions and let us practice our bad Spanish.
All of our guides were wonderful. They were all very knowledgeable and professional and friendly. You can tell they enjoy what they do.

Holiday Inn San José-Aurola

This hotel wasn't "amazing" but it was fine and served it's purpose. We checked in at 10 at night and were gone the next day by 2. The rooms were dated and drab but everything worked. Great water pressure in the shower. We were hungry when we got in but didn't know where to find food at such a late hour. The person at the front desk let us know that we could order via Uber Eats. 45 minutes later we were eating Chinese food in our room. If he hadn't mentioned it, I'm not sure we would have thought of delivery. The breakfast in the morning was a good mix of hot foods and fruits. The waiter helped us when my wife overcooked her waffle in the waffle maker. The location of the hotel is very convenient to downtown San Jose. They held our bags as we went out to explore the city. Overall a solid choice for 1 night.

We didn't have any hot water on our first night. Of course when the hotel sent someone to check on it the next morning the hot water was working. We had intermittent hot water for the rest of our stay. Besides the hot water, I don't have any complaints about the hotel. The room is simple and comfortable. Our 3rd floor room had a balcony overlooking the gardens. The restaurant served a yummy buffet breakfast. My favorite part of the property was the proximity to the beach. The beach is beautiful and only a few minutes from our room. We saw a sloth perched in the trees at the beach on our last day.

This is a beautiful property. The landscaping is beautiful with a garden and walking trail. Didn't get to use the heated pool or hot tub but it looked like the perfect way to finish a long day. The rooms were modern and comfortable. Great shower water pressure. The front desk staff, especially Lilly, was very helpful and hospitable. The restaurant had a yummy ala carte style breakfast in the morning. My only complaint is that with high winds during our stay, the branches from the trees kept hitting the roof above our room making it very difficult to sleep. We should have said something after the first night. If you're on the 4th floor make sure the tree branches are clear of the roof.

Fantastic hotel. The combination of the various hot spring pools, surrounding vegetation and the view of the mountains made this property really impressive. I think there was 7 or 8 different pools/hot tubs to enjoy. My favorite part was the view of the pasture and mountain from the coffee shop. The property feels luxurious and natural at the same time. The breakfast buffet at the restaurant was my favorite breakfast of all the hotels we stayed at. Good selection of hot breakfast food and all the fruits you could want. The rooms were modern, spacious and comfortable. Staff was friendly. Kenneth helped us schedule a taxi and make a dinner reservation on our first night.

We got to stay in the Villa. It was basically a one bedroom house with a full kitchen and living room and nice covered patio section. When we were escorted to the villa the sofa bed in the living room looked like it had been used and not cleaned and a coffee cup was in the sink. The hotel employee assisting us had somebody come and makeup the sofa while we were out at lunch. Not a huge deal but not a great first impression either. The shower water pressure was weak. The property is full of trees and animals. We saw an Iguana, monkeys, squirrels, lizards and cats. The breakfast was served a la carte and was delicious. The restaurant staff was very friendly. The pool was simple but very relaxing. Live music sounded good too.

There were 21 of us on this tour, by far our most crowded tour of the trip. The ride to the beach took an hour and then it was a 20 minute walk to the beach. We waited for over an hour while our guide scouted the beach for turtles. There was only one turtle on the beach that night. We were able to observe the turtle nesting and laying it s eggs.

Dear Sergio, Charlotte and Nancy,

We cannot thank you enough for the wonderful experience we enjoyed in Costa Rica with your tremendous assistance, including the splendid itinerary, your responsiveness before and during our trip, and your suggestions of what to see and experience. True, you had an excellent canvas to work with: Costa Rica! The country is beautiful with so much to see and enjoy, and the people we met along our journey were also a pleasure, and the food was so tasteful and exactly the kind of food we enjoy as vegetarians. That said, we know that the quality of our experience was enhanced due to your individual and collective expertise and professionalism.

As for the guides and tours you recommended, each were great in their own way. Chris, our guide at hanging bridges (assisted by Pablo) was informative and personable. The white water rafting was truly a blast and well run, and the zip lining was, despite my personal fear of heights, truly amazing. Likewise, we cannot say enough good things about Andres Socio, our guide at Manuel Antonio National State Park; he is truly brilliant, good natured, and has a good sense of humor. Frankly, without the guides you recommended we would have missed the vast majority of what we saw on the hikes we did. Also, the ocean kayaking and snorkeling tour, in which Maddy and I were the only two participants, was also a tremendous life experience and very well run. We even made a point, per your recommendation, of stopping at Crocodile Bridge and were glad that we did. And the resorts we stayed at were each spectacular in their own way. Tabacon it was the thermal hot springs. Peace Lodge: as animal rights activists and nature/outdoor lovers, Peace Lodge was heaven on earth to us and had great vibe. And Arenas del Mar, particularly given its beachfront access and trappings and staff, and the many creatures of nature (capuchins, sloths, iguanas etc) that were just roaming about, was a blend of perfection. And Grano de Oro, an oasis in that neighborhood, proved to be the perfect cap to our trip.

Again, thank you, thank you and thank you.

Bryan was extremely patient and thorough when planning our trip. He was able to answer all my questions and concerns, and adjust my plans accordingly. He truly understood what we were wanting for this trip and our experience exceeded our expectations. We had a great balance of cultural experiences and downtime to hang out at the beach and pools. All of our accommodations were interesting and wonderful -- not your average resort. We loved the Poas Volcano Lodge in the Cloud Forest. It was small and intimate, and they went out of their way to make our family feel welcome. My kids declared it the best hot cocoa. Our favorite was La Mariposa in Manuel Antonio. Monkeys were always around and we had a pair of Macaws fly past our balcony every morning. Nearby restaurants are great. Our favorite excursion here was the nighttime rainforest tour. The national park tour is a must, and we had THE BEST tour guide, but expect it to be very slow. Lost Iguana near La Fortuna is a good place to stay, but it could use a little bit of updating. However, the views are the best, great hiking trail and a good restaurant. Our kids liked the heated pool. The town of La Fortuna has a lot of shopping and restaurants. Our favorite events of the entire trip were here: The cultural experience was the absolute best and everyone should be so lucky to do this. Second to that was the Chocolate Factory Tour.

If you're considering using KimKim.com to plan your trip to Costa Rica, do it. Our experience was seamless and wonderful. We will use them again.

Phil was polite, responsive and courteous throughout my trip. However, a few things could have been better planned and the last day was quite frustrating. My 8-day solo trip had 3 legs which started off in La Fortuna, then onto Manuel Antonio and finishing off In Corcovado National Park.

Phil did an amazing job arranging a car rental pick up and drop off at specific locations which really helped my journey. He also very kindly helped with the flight back to San Jose from Drake on the last day after I realised I had booked the wrong flight time. Thanks!

Unfortunately, I was given the wrong international dialling code so I wasn’t able to get Phil on WhatsApp until day 3. During this time he was not contactable on the KimKim platform either. It got sorted out eventually.

The Volcano Hotel Inn at La Fortuna was pretty basic to be honest and didn’t have any hot water for the shower. Spending $3,000 I would have expected a little bit of a higher standard. What lacked in quality was made up somewhat for a location as I had a breathtaking view of the Arenal Volcano from my room. The Baldi hot springs were super cool and highly recommended. I was disappointed that the waterfall tour was cancelled because of a lack of numbers and I would have liked an alternative to being arranged rather than a refund.

The next leg of my journey was a 9-hour drive to Manuel Antonio. In hindsight, I think this could have been planned better. I was able to break up the journey by stopping off at the La Paz waterfall which was beautiful and the crocodile bridge which was also cool. Then I was privileged to see a family of 9 whales on the afternoon whale-watching tour at Uvita. I didn’t realise I had to double back on myself to Manuel Antonio with another 2-hour drive. This left me absolutely exhausted when I checked into my hotel.

The Manuel Antonio hotel was fine, nothing spectacular but again the location was superb as I was right on the beach. There was a degree of noise outside my room with loud music coming from a local market across the way a few yards away. The itinerary said I should book a ticket for the local national park but when I got there it was already booked out for the next 2 days. I wished Phil had booked this for me in advance and can’t understand why it wasn’t.

The final leg of the journey started in Rancho Corcovado in Drake Bay but I had to pay for the ferry boat to get there. Phil kindly refunded me this fee. The hotel was right on the beach and the location is truly spectacular. The instructions for the pick up the next morning for Corcovado could have been better as the hotel manager didn’t know where I was getting picked up and Phil had some vague direction that it would be from the beach I was on.

I thought I was spending 2 nights inside the remote parts of the park but I only found out on day 2 that this wasn’t the case because there was no room for me at any station in the park. I felt let down when I found this out. I thought I had given KimKim and Phil enough time to arrange for this. I was very disappointed that I never received any communication about this. On day 1, this was the highlight of the whole trip. I saw so much wildlife and took many pictures. Our guide was amazing and had so knowledgeable about everything. He had a telescope with him and was able to zoom in on every animal so we could see everything in amazing clarity. The people on my tour were great and so friendly.

Day 2 of the trip started out with more wildlife watching, which is what I came for. Amazing! I was then told then the group would depart around 11, and I would be on my own with the guide which would turn into “more of a hike”. This was not clear in the itinerary as it mentioned “backyard station” which I took to mean a station inside Corcovado. This was not the case. There was also confusion about my large bag which I had kept on me and even hiked for 2 KM with on my back on day 1. In my opinion, it should really have been left behind in Rancho Corcovado but the communication on this wasn’t there, and at the last second I was told to leave it on the boat at San Pedrillo. I didn’t have time to really get anything out of my large bag to bring with me on the hike.

And so, to the “hike” which was very intense and very difficult through some very thick and dense forest. There wasn’t much of a trail and it was very muddy even for the dry season. As we were gaining altitude it was noticeable how little wildlife there is up here as they like lowland terrain just like humans. I really didn’t enjoy this at all, and the last thing I wanted on my last day on holiday before 20 hours of flying back to Ireland, was a workout like this.

I was very warmly welcomed at the lodging that evening, and while I had my own room, I couldn’t believe there was no mosquito netting around the windows, it was completely open. Even my guide said he had complained previously about this and was told there are no mosquitos around here. How wrong that was. I woke up the next morning with lots of mosquito bites, and for another gruelling hike back towards Drake Bay. It was really disappointing that I felt I only got half a Corcovado 2-night experience.

Overall, Costa Rica is a beautiful country with amazing people and I would have no reservations about recommending it as a destination for other travellers. My expectation was slightly off given some of the accommodation. Using KimKim on the whole was a useful experience. I guess where I feel let down is in some of the finer details which I was hoping I didn’t need to micromanage so closely.

Hi Cathal!

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide this detailed feedback, without a doubt it helps us a lot to improve our service and to improve the choice of partners for the tours we hire.

Also, thank you again for entrusting us with your vacations. We are aware that it is a great responsibility that we have, from the moment the traveler decides to hire our services, I know that it is difficult not to be satisfied with Costa Rica and its exotic fauna and stunning nature, but I hope that in general terms you have been satisfied with our organization of the trip.

I have to say that I do not agree with the way you have evaluated us since we have always been with you every time you have contacted us during the day, you have requested modifications and very specific events in the middle of the high season that we have been able to arrange for you. Also, you rated us with 1/5 stars on the guided tour to the Fortuna waterfall because you did not do the tour as we had told you from the beginning, that possibility existed since you were traveling alone and the tours need a minimum of 2 people to be able to open. However, we gave you all the information and we even tried to convince you to do it alone since you can also enjoy it a lot. To me, that’s a bit unfair.

As far as Corcovado is concerned, you were looking for a very specific combo of days of a lot of adventure through the national park, where there are very few amenities. We sent you the specified schedule with each activity day by day, and according to the company, it was carried out to the letter.

Although it was the first time we used this combo because it is quite unusual and adventurous, we have a lot of working with this tour company in Corcovado and our travelers have always been very satisfied with their services.

referring to your points:
-the code area, was undoubtedly a bad mistake from our end, at the end it was a typo but we have no excuse for this. However you could always contact the Kim Customer Service so they could reach us or take care of the situation, We were able to get in contact with you the very same day.
- Regarding the Volcano Inn, we find it unacceptable that it did not have hot water, we have contacted them so that they give us an account regarding this; We would have liked you to let us know at the time so that we can make a claim
- Regarding la Fortuna Waterfall, as we told you, it was one of the disadvantages of traveling alone; many tours are not opened by a single person unless that person pays double the tour. However, we suggested doing it without a guide which is possible and also worth it.
- Regarding the 9-hour journey that you mention, we are a little dismayed by what happened, and we are convinced that something was not done right. These are routes that we do a lot for many travelers, and that we have done ourselves, so they are not that many hours... From La Fortuna to Manuel Antonio is about 4h50 and we included the Google Maps link with each journey. Then it was 1h10 later to Manuel Antonio.

Congratulations on seeing the family of 9 whales, I am Tico and I have not had the opportunity to see so many, I am very happy for you that despite so many hours of travel you had these rewards.

-I am sorry about Manuel Antonio National Park, buying the ticket is very easy and it's actually cheaper if you do it on your own, however, I forgot to ask you if you’d like us to purchase it for you. It was not done basically so that travelers could better choose the entry time since this has to be chosen in advance.

Finally, I hope you liked the country very much and you had an unforgettable experience.

All the best,

Phil

Overall, I was completely blown away by my family's trip to Costa Rica. I expected to see natural beauty and warm weather but the hospitality of the locals is why I’ll be coming back.

Two examples. On our drive to Monteverde we got a bit lost and were trying to make a U-turn on a narrow, difficult part of road. A random guy riding past on his dirt bike stopped, got off his bike, paused incoming traffic, and helped guide us through the turn. Roads in Costa Rica were pretty terrible outside of San Jose but it’s not really a big deal. Drive with a puravida mindset and you’ll be perfectly fine. On another occasion, we stayed at Hotel Koora at Monteverde. The staff gave my 5 year old a really cool wooden Coati toy. They also loaded us up a bag of water and snacks after learning we were heading out on a road trip to Manuel Antonio. Amazing.

The food was incredible. Nothing fancy but everything is fresh and a lot of attention is paid to preparation regardless of where you eat from Soda’s to the 4 star hotels.

I traveled with my five year old. He loved the trip and especially any component with a beach or pool. The guided nature hikes are a bit tough on kids. Really cool when they get to see things but it can be hard for them to spot things in the dense jungle. For kids especially I recommend the night nature tours. We used Sukia in Manuel Antonio and they were terrific. Kids love holding the spotlight and trying to find eyes in the dark.

I got the impression that Costa Rica has a very complicated economy... with a large social/word of mouth culture. I wouldn't recommend doing stuff without e.g. a professional tour guide. Socio, our guide with Endemic Birds, was incredibly knowledgeable and great at trying to keep the kids entertained.

Brian with Serendipity Adventures did an amazing job with getting our itinerary setup. Everything flowed seamlessly. Hotels exceeded expectations.

Had a very good two hours hike with a small group of other travellers. This was well organised. Although if you have your own transportation, it is not difficult to get to the start of the hike, having a guide will greatly help with actually seeing any of the wild life, in addition to lots of interesting information about the volcano itself. . It is next to impossible to spot any of the wild life by yourself. The guide carries a telescope lens allowing to see the animals very closely and take good pictures. We made an improptu stop on the way to the volcano because our guide knew that a number of sloths were in trees next to the road, and was excited to show them to us. They are very few sloths left in the wild and they are very difficult to spot. It was a a very good start of the trip.

Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve Guided Hike
Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve Guided Hike
Monteverde

This activity started with a 20 mn drive in a mini bus from our hotel to the Reserve through a dirt road up the hill. We were there in January so the road was dry, but according to the driver, it can be challenging at time. The Reserve got a number of tracks ranging from 0.5km to 4.8km loops. The guide tour took about 2 hours using a 1.5-2km track, as we progressed slowly looking at plants and animals. The track is easy to walk on, especially since we were there in January and it was fairly dry. The weather can change very quickly and can be very misty at time, so come equipped. Although walking around by yourself is not difficult (if you got transportation to get to the Reserve), having a guide is very valuable since it is next to impossible to find and see animals by yourself. The guide carries a telescoping lens so that you can observe very well all there is to see. Our guide, Danny, was most knowledgeable about all the plants around, and was happy to talk about anything related to Costa Rica. We thoroughly enjoyed discussing with him. He managed to find a sloth, porcupine, a tarantula (hidden in a hole), and plenty of birds and other animals. We walked up to the top of the area, where there is a 4 story tower to observe the surroundings, including a number of volcanos. At some stage, we were at the exact point where the water would either go to the Pacific ocean or the Caribbean seen, depending on which side you go. This tour is great for nature lovers and worth getting a guide if you want to fully experience this unique place.

Planning a vacation is never easy, but Kim Kim made the process incredibly easy for me. We communicated a lot via the website allowing me to get my questions answered easily.
During our five days, we had nothing to worry about. Transportation and activities were all taken care of. In Arenal we did the hot pools and took a beautiful hike around the volcano. We also took incredible photos of the stunning waterfall and got to swim around it . The hanging bridges were also amazing!
We moved on to Manuel Antonio where we went on a private catamaran, snorkeled and swam in the ocean. We went deep sea fishing and also explored the National Park. We saw monkeys, sloths, snakes and many other things native to Costa Rica. The beach and the sunset view was amazing!
I highly recommend Kim Kim, it made my life and trip so much easier!

Olman was very patient in working with us as we weren't sure what we wanted from our trip. I appreciated all the information as we were making our choices. Olman had great suggestions on where to stay, what to do, and where to eat. In particular, we loved our stay at The Springs. It was more than we would normally spend, but the resort was worth it. The La Paz Waterfall hiking and rafting excursion were our favorite outings. Our favorite meal was a reservation that Olman made for us in San Jose for our New Year's Eve dinner. All of our drivers were attentive to our needs and got us to our destinations safely and in good time. We normally plan our own trips, but I was so thankful to have Olman from KimKim do it for us for Costa Rica. I would definitely recommend this service!

The people at the front desk were the best part. Very helpful in calling taxis, exchanging money and answering our questions. Room was clean and comfortable, the food at the hotel was good. Only four stars because the fire alarm went off at five in the morning and the pool was cold.

Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas
Guanacaste

This hotel was a great choice for our family because of the 2-bedroom villa with private pool. We even had monkeys swing by as we were swimming! But the vibe wasn't quite our speed. We didn't take advantage of the wellness opportunities and the food wasn't very family friendly. It might have just been a hard transition coming here after our favorite resort in Arenal.

It was a bit farther to raft then the information we were given suggested, but even so, I would recommend this trip. Guides were experienced and helpful and it was just the right amount of thrills for our family. The even took us to a spot where we could jump off a small cliff into the water.

I missed this trip because I became ill in Tamarindo and unfortunately they were unable to reschedule us. My husband and kids went and enjoyed their time. The guide was fantastic. As far as snorkeling goes, they didn't see many fish, but they enjoyed the kayak ride.
