What you'll do

Leave your accommodations in Monteverde in the early evening. Meet your local guide for a tour of a coffee plantation. Along the way, you'll learn about the cultivation and preparation of coffee. Your guide will also show you the simplest way to prepare a perfect cup of coffee. Sit and chat with your guide as you sip a delicious cup, asking any questions you may have about the plantation or life in Costa Rica.

Next, enjoy a brief chocolate activity and sample locally-made chocolates. Then you'll venture into the protected forest that makes up about 50% of the plantation's property. The trail extends along a creek that runs through the farm, an ideal location to spot wildlife in the trees and along the water. During the night hike, you'll hear the natural sounds of frogs and insects, witness the glow of fireflies, and likely spot frogs, sloths, and possibly even the elusive kinkajou.

You'll travel back to Monteverde to finish the tour.

This was a highlight of our time in Monteverde. We were picked up at our hotel and driven to a small coffee farm. We first got to press some sugar cane and a lime, and had some to drink. Then we learned abut how coffee is grown, roasted and what gives it unique qualities. We sampled several roasts of coffee beans. We then ventured out into the forest when it got dark, with flashlights and nerves on edge! We saw a mother and baby sloth, armadillos, tarantula, a couple of snakes, and... Read more

We purchased some coffee that had been grown there to bring home. Our guide, Junior, was knowledgeable, entertaining as heck, and passionate about growing coffee. This was one of the best experiences of our trip!

The tour guide was great, however the season was not right as we could not see all the coffee making in action. Also, we were not lucky enough to see many things at the Nature Walk and you never know what you get to see, but overall was good experience. Read more

I enjoyed learning about a major export of Costa Rica and how the coffee is grown and harvested.
When it was very dark, we did have a nice walk through the jungle, saw sloths, pit viper, porcupine, basilisk lizard and a kinkajou. Not bad for a short stroll through the jungle. I believe other night walks in the Arenal area might prove even more productive.
Our guide was very knowledgeable and tried hard to ensure that we saw all that he was pointing out.

Transport was a little confusing, we did not know whether a ride back was going to be provided, in the end it was and was included but the staff there was unaware.

One of the most authentic feeling activities from our trip. Junior has his own (with his business partner and wife) small farm and showed us around. Felt less commercial than the other coffee options in the area, which was nice. Price was also reasonable. Bring extra money to buy coffee!
