What you'll do

Your adventure starts when you grab your hiking boots and meet your driver outside your hotel for a transfer to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Here you'll meet the rest of your small group and your experienced naturalist guide and delve into one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet, home to approximately 2.5% of the world's species. Your guide will share insights into the distinct ecological zones within the reserve and share fascinating details about the mammals, birds, insects, and plants that thrive there.

As you navigate the cloud forest trails, you'll have the chance to spot an array of fascinating flora and fauna. While wildlife sightings aren't guaranteed, your guide will expertly lead you to the best vantage points for observing some of the reserve's most famous residents, including resplendent quetzals, two-toed sloths, colorful toucans, and capuchin monkeys. After several hours in the cloud forest, you'll make a short stop at a women's artisan cooperative for the chance to meet the locals and pick up some souvenirs before your transfer back to your hotel.

The reserve only let's in a limited number of people (200?) but we were in the guided group so we got in easily. We had to get there early to check in and they bus you to the reserved (maybe a 5 minute drive).

The guide did is good job of describing the wildlife and was good at showing us flora and fauna.

Tips for future travelers

show up on time -- they wanted us there pretty early and it took time to check in, park the car and get up to the start of the hike.

Not a hard hike at all and there is a lot of waiting around with the guide talking through details. We had a couple of people walk out of the group because the pace is slow.

Tips for future travelers

Bring good quality rain gear - it rains off an on all the time and is always wet. As far as equipment goes, make sure to have water and fog proof binoculars and spotting scopes (other wise they will cloud over and be unusable) and to have rain protection for any high end photography equipment you plan to use. If you care about birds absolutely bring good binoculars or scope. You will see so many birds but most at a distance so magnification is a big help. If you love hummingbirds work in a stop at Colibri Cafe which is close to the park. They have feeders outside and we saw 5 or 6 different types of hummingbirds while enjoying hot drinks.

Our guide was Micheal. In addition to be an highly educated naturalist, we was local to Monteverde and provided insight into what is what like growing up in the mountains.
