Overview
Kimkim's Take
- Enjoy a peaceful hotel run by family members with stellar views from a restaurant where candlelit dinners take place, as well as free breakfasts that include made-to-order options.
- Simple rooms (also with views) have original wood floors and antiques; some units have kitchenettes, including private cabins scattered across the hillside.
- You'll find yourself in a unique setting among mountains and fjords, offering views in every direction, with easy access to hiking trails for all skill levels.
- The property's gardens invite you to walk barefoot and enjoy the quiet.
- The hotel's location along the Norwegian Scenic Routes makes it a perfect base for exploring nearby cultural sites like St. Olaf's Church and Hopperstad Stave Church.
- A commitment to sustainability is evident, with local produce featured in the delicious dining options and eco-friendly practices in place.
- The remote location requires a drive to most places (like a grocery store to stock the kitchenettes), so a car is recommended. However, the hotel offers a shuttle service for a charge.
- The dining experience, though excellent, may be on the pricier side, reflecting the quality and local sourcing of the ingredients.
Authenticity
Dragsvik Fjordhotell is steeped in history; originally a farmhouse dating back to the 1800s, you can find remnants of the old main road passing through its orchards, and its quay used to be where traditional rowboats once anchored. The property has been in the family since 1953 and is now run by the third and fourth generations. When you check in, a family member, likely Vida Maria, the host, will give you a form for an advance breakfast order and a dinner menu for an advance order if you choose to dine on the property. This is the hotel's way to minimize food waste.Complimentary cinnamon rolls, tea, and coffee may be served in the afternoon by Uncle Magnar. At dinnertime, candles are lit, and romantic music draws couples and occasional families to the restaurant—all vying for tables with the best views (and the views are extraordinary). This is a seasonal hotel, and each year, slight changes are introduced that have been agreed upon by various family members. Guests may even be asked for their opinion on a topic of improvement.
Location
The Dragsvik car ferry is a few hundred yards from the hotel, serving the eastern and southern shores of the Sognefjord. You'll want to be careful crossing the road when cars enter or depart the ferry as they speed by the hotel. Besides these occasional busy moments, the hotel enjoys a peaceful location, letting the fjord views take center stage. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the Josdedalsbreen glacier. Guests can get to Balestrand in about 10 minutes by car along the Norwegian Scenic Route Gaularfjellet, with access to shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Parking at the hotel is free, and there's one EV charging station for a fee. The hotel does provide a shuttle service for a fee if you're without a rental.Rooms & Bathrooms
Simple, bright rooms with fjord views come in either Standard size or Comfort size for more space. Each one is unique with charming touches and configurations and is located either in the main hotel building or in the red clapboard house next door with historical significance (ask staff for the story). There are also five private cabins on the hillside below the main hotel overlooking the fjord, with authentic details like wood-beamed ceilings. Cabins tend to draw couples, and they come with private decks, kitchenettes, lounges, and dining areas.Amenities
The hotel's expansive garden is a highlight, offering guests a tranquil space to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of the fjord and glacier views. You can explore the hiking trails right at the doorstep, ranging from easy walks to challenging mountain climbs. The on-site dining is exceptional, focusing on regional flavors and local ingredients.Family-Friendliness
While the hotel provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere, it doesn't specifically cater to families with young children. The focus is more on offering a peaceful retreat for all guests, with an emphasis on nature and relaxation. However, the cabins with kitchens and outdoor space can be a good option for families seeking a more self-contained stay, though you'll have to reach out to the hotel directly as all units are for double-person occupancy.Sustainability
Dragsvik Fjordhotell is committed to sustainable hotel management, focusing on protecting the environment through responsible practices and local engagement. As a certified Eco-Lighthouse hotel, Dragsvik prioritizes quality in every aspect—from sourcing local produce from farms like Tjugum, Rendal, and Alm to using eco-brands like SKOG–WOOD and implementing effective recycling programs. Guests can savor local flavors while appreciating the hotel's efforts to minimize energy consumption, including thermal heating, clean-burning fireplaces, and improved insulation.Other Highlights
The restaurant at dinnertime has a romantic ambience due to the soft music, low lighting, and candles. Guests can choose between a handful of nightly options that will likely include fresh seafood, a house burger, local beers, and a wine list. Lucky ones will be seated next to the large window for extraordinary views. The complimentary breakfast is also served in this space, offering made-to-order dishes and self-serve fruit, yogurt, toast, and nuts. Staff members can arrange excursions in the local area, like hiking and fishing trips, that include packed lunches.Like what you see?
