Hotel Lisboa Plaza, Lisbon

4.9 (10 reviews) · Upscale
Historic family-owned hotel just off Avenida da Liberdade, with traditional decor, a cozy bar, and a rooftop terrace

Overview

The family-owned Hotel Lisboa Plaza has been welcoming guests since 1954 from its quiet spot just off the central, tree-lined boulevard of Avenida da Liberdade. Guests can follow the avenue south to reach landmarks like Rossio Square and Bairro Alto in under 15 minutes, or hop on the nearby metro and train links to explore farther afield. Behind the hotel's historic Art Nouveau facade, the renovated interiors are traditional and elegant, with inviting lounges, a cozy bar, a rooftop terrace, and rooms that blend Portuguese heritage with modern comforts, antique furniture, and marble bathrooms.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • The hotel's address between the leafy Avenida da Liberdade and the Lisbon Botanical Gardens gives it a peaceful feel while still being within easy walking distance of most central landmarks.
  • Rooms are comfortable and relatively spacious, featuring traditional decor, large windows, and marble bathrooms.
  • The small rooftop terrace is a nice spot to watch the sunset, with comfortable seating and an honesty bar.
  • An optional breakfast is served buffet-style until noon, and the on-site restaurant offers light snacks and 24-hour room service.
  • This is the most family-friendly of the five Heritage Lisbon Hotels, with family rooms and suites that sleep up to four.
Cons
  • The street-facing rooms can experience some noise, but the updated double glazing generally keeps it to a minimum.
  • All floors are reached by elevator, but there are no specifically accessible rooms.

Authenticity

One of five properties in the exclusive Lisbon Heritage Hotels collection, the Hotel Lisboa Plaza has been owned by the same family since its opening in 1954. Behind the stately Art Nouveau facade, you'll find interiors overhauled in 2015 by designer Graca Viterbo. The renovation preserved the hotel's old-world feel, with lots of glossy marble, polished wood, and antique pieces in the beautifully lit lobby and common areas. This is the most old-fashioned offering in the Heritage portfolio, but also one of the coziest, and the long-serving staff are known for making guests feel at home—starting with a warm welcome from the liveried door attendants and a glass of port at reception.

Location

The hotel is situated on a cobbled side street just off the leafy artery of Avenida da Liberdade, meaning you'll have most city sights within walking distance while feeling slightly removed from the busy Old Town areas. You can walk to Rossio Square and its train station or the medieval Bairro Alto in under 15 minutes, while a 20-minute stroll south along the avenue takes you to Praça do Comércio and the river. The Avenida metro is just around the corner, and the greenery of the Lisbon Botanical Garden lies directly behind the hotel. There's private parking available nearby at an added charge, as well as access to EV chargers.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The hotel has just over 100 air-conditioned rooms, from petite doubles to large suites, and most are furnished in a traditional style with pale walls dotted with etchings and watercolors, original parquet flooring or dense carpets, and large windows. Furniture is a mix of antique and modern pieces, with plush armchairs, polished desks, and printed drapes that continue the old-world theme. High-quality linens and handmade Portuguese Burel blankets keep things feeling luxurious, and the marble bathrooms have a mix of traditional tubs and modern shower rooms, all stocked with Castelbel toiletries.

Amenities

The hotel's elegant common areas are a highlight; nab a velvet couch or a fireside armchair in the lounge or living room, or sidle up to the Paddock Bar for a glass of wine in the evenings. The small top-floor roof terrace provides a sunny spot with chaise loungers and an honesty bar, and downstairs, you'll find the Café Plaza in a lovely wood-paneled room overlooking a tiny garden courtyard. A breakfast buffet is served here in the mornings, plus light meals and snacks throughout the day. Guests also have access to a petite but well-equipped fitness room.

Family-Friendliness

Hotel Lisboa Plaza is the most family-friendly of the Lisbon Heritage Hotels, and children of all ages are welcomed warmly here. While there are no specific kid-focused amenities, the family rooms can sleep two adults and two children, and the central but slightly quieter location is a good choice for exploring the city with little ones.

A more modern hotel in the inside, but the Library Bar was a charming place to have a drink while deciding what to do next in Lisbon!
Location
Metro and train stations nearby, close to good, local restaurants. As a solo traveler I felt very safe walking to and from this hotel by myself at night.
Staff
Everyone was so friendly, but Erica at the front desk was particularly helpful. She made dinner recommendations and helped get reservations at cool places on a busy summer weekend!
Cleanliness & Comfort
My bed was super comfy.

We LOVED this hotel!!!! The location is PERFECT!

Authenticity & Character
There is no music in the bar area which is really strange. The bartender told me that the owner doesn't like music playing. Odd since no one has ever been in a bar/lounge are at a hotel with no music. It made it awkward and we would take a drink to our room instead.
Location
THE BEST! Location! Dining at Gina (1 block away) is a MUST!

Lovely old historic hotel in the heart of Lisbon. Small rooms but clean and comfortable but ours overlooked the street so leaving windows open was an issue due to noise. Breakfast buffet fine but not extensive- small dining area and it was quite crowded for seating during our stay. There is a small outdoor deck on the 5 th floor which was nice to have. So close to the Ave. Liberdade for enjoyable tree covered walks and outdoor food kiosks and downtown Lisbon.
