Cliffside wellness resort outside Lagos with ocean views, three pools, a spa, and multiple dining options

Overview

Cascade Wellness Resort is a sprawling luxury clifftop retreat overlooking the Atlantic and wide sandy beaches far below. Situated within a 5-minute drive of Lagos' Old Town and the popular Praia do Camilo beach, guests have quick access to numerous hiking trails—some leading to the beach. Accommodations range from rooms and suites to spacious apartments and independent villas. Amenities include three pools, a full-service spa with a heated swimming pool, a kids' club, and a selection of dining options (three restaurants and two bars, one servicing the main pool), as well as a soccer field and golf packages to nearby courses for fans of the sport.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • You'll find Cascade Wellness Resort perfectly placed between Lagos city center and Porto de Mós beach, offering sweeping cliffside views.
  • Rooms offer beachy vibes with brightly painted accent walls complimented by neutral linens and wooden furnishings. Each has a balcony or terrace overlooking the garden, pool, or ocean.
  • The resort offers a comprehensive wellness experience, including three pools, a full-service spa, and numerous fitness options, such as yoga, boot camps, and a golf course.
  • Dining options are plentiful, with three restaurants and two bars on-site, providing a mix of international and local cuisine.
  • The location is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, with easy access to hiking and cycling trails along the Via Algarviana and Monchique Mountain.
  • Families will appreciate the kids' club and football academy, ensuring little ones are well entertained.
Cons
  • While the resort is a peaceful escape, it's location outside Lagos' lively center requires a short drive to access the town's main attractions.
  • Some areas of the resort may show signs of wear and could benefit from updates, but the staff is attentive and eager to address any concerns.

Authenticity

Cascade Wellness Resort doesn't have a deep historical background, but it embraces the local culture through its culinary offerings. The on-site restaurants serve local as well as regional dishes, in addition to international fare. Meanwhile, the minimal but modern beach-style decor, with bold colors and wooden furnishings, captures the coastal vibe of Lagos.

Location

Nestled on the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade, Cascade Wellness Resort offers a peaceful retreat just outside the lively center of Lagos. It's a five-minute drive from Lagos' Old Town and the Praia do Camilo, with its turquoise waters and iconic rock formations. The resort is also a short walk from Praia do Canavial's cliffs, providing easy access to hiking trails and panoramic ocean views. While the beach isn't directly accessible, the resort's location allows you to explore the area's natural beauty easily.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The property's five wings each represent a continent (plus Portugal) Portuguese navigators sailed to, most decorated in bright accent walls (cobalt blue, lime green, etc) and complimented with neutral whites, beiges, and blacks. Each room includes a balcony or terrace with views of the garden, pool, or ocean. One- and two-bedroom apartments have easy access to the sand-bottom swimming pool, while four-bedroom villas, perfect for larger groups, have their own private pool.

Amenities

Cascade Wellness Resort stands out with its diverse amenities, including three swimming pools, a full-service spa with a sauna, a Jacuzzi, a Turkish bath, and a cold plunge pool. For those seeking active pursuits, there's a soccer field, golf course (guests receive discounted golf package rates), and trails for running or cycling. The resort also offers three on-site restaurants, Senses, The Gastropub, and Mundi Restaurant, with international and local menus. The kids' club and soccer academy provide entertainment and activities for young guests.

Family-Friendliness

Families will find Cascade Wellness Resort accommodating, with a kids' club, babysitting services, and a soccer academy designed with kids in mind. Larger accommodations, such as suites and villas, offer ample space for families to relax and enjoy their stay. While the resort caters to families, it also provides a tranquil environment for all guests to unwind and explore the surrounding natural beauty.

The Cascade Wellness was good, but it didn't quite live up to the five-star rating in our minds, especially after staying at the Monumental Palace. The resort itself was beautiful, but some aspects, like the service and amenities, could be improved. We had some nice staff and some staff that didn't really care about what we were talking about. Also, they had just started adding a tip into your bill at the restaurant / bar but didn't tell you about it. So, if you didn't notice it then and you... Read more

Authenticity & Character
The hotel needs some TLC in places.
Location
Beautiful location but just a little far from town.
Staff
I think maybe they were short staffed at times.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The beds were two double beds put together. Why not just one king bed?

We have admittedly high standards when it comes to our resort hotels. Unfortunately, despite what appeared to be their best efforts Cascade Wellness just didn't meet the mark. Our first apartment (#511) was very disappointing-- a not insignificant walk to the main dining areas/pools with a view of the roundabout, combined with worn/dirty furnishings, dirty linens and black mildew rampant in the shower areas. We were disappointed enough that for only the 2nd time in my life, we requested a room change. The second apartment (#1111) was an improvement in terms of cleanliness/pool access. Overall, however, this resort needs refurbishment. The carpets/couches/draperies in both apartments need to be deep cleaned to remove stains and the furniture is noticeably dented and scratched. In the three days we spent poolside, the pool bar by the 'sand' pool never opened (we were there in mid-June and the pool was in use by many people). Landscaping does not appear to be watered regularly and walkways between buildings were in need of repair. We only ate at the hotel once after being unimpressed with our lunch, preferring either to go out and order in via UberEats. The front desk, however, did try to be helpful, providing good restaurant recommendations and, after moving us, checking to see if the new apartment was an improvement. Bottom line, this is not a 5 star, or even a 4 star, resort.

Location
Resort was convenient to Lagos and other towns, but given the environment (set on a cliff above the ocean) no easy beach access or easy ocean views.
Staff
Staff was fine-- but other than one woman at the front desk who really helped us with dinner reservations and with moving our apartment, service did not particularly stand out.
Cleanliness & Comfort
As noted in my review, our initial apartment was dirty enough and in bad enough repair overall that we requested to be moved to a new apartment. Stay away from Apartment #511.
