Kimkim's Take

Pros

  • The hotel owners are very hands-on, so you'll likely receive a warm welcome from them or see them around the property.
  • Enjoy swimming in the pool, which offers quite a relaxing ambience surrounded by vegetation and trees.
  • You can enjoy live music at the hotel on a Wednesday or Sunday night during the high season (December through April).
  • A short walk down the street gets you to the beach or downtown Tamarindo, where you'll find plenty of restaurants, cafés, bars, and shops.

Cons

  • Keep in mind that this isn't a beachfront hotel, nor does it offer direct beach access.
  • The property is close to a nightclub, meaning it can be noisy late at night and on the weekends.
  • Though still clean and functional, most bathrooms could use an update.

Authenticity

The enthusiastic owners spend a lot of time at the hotel, maintaining the grounds and making guests feel at home. Thanks to the dense vegetation and mango trees, you might see iguanas and howler monkeys as you walk about the property. For a more tame animal experience, enjoy the company of the resident cat. As a unique sustainability perk, any food waste goes straight to a nearby pig farm.

Location

Though not oceanfront, a short 5-minute walk takes you to Playa Tamarindo. Keep going, and you'll reach the downtown area. But despite not being in the center of the action, it can get a little noisy at the hotel, as it's near a club that plays music on the weekends into the early morning hours. To explore the area and other famed beaches of Tamarindo, plan to drive or hire a transfer. Playa Grande and Playa Ventanas are both about 40 minutes away.

Rooms & Bathrooms

With new owners acquiring the property in 2021, all the rooms have been repainted, and several other renovations are underway. Twenty-four rooms offer clean, bright lodgings with mini-fridges, air conditioning, and ceiling fans. Most units sleep two or three guests, though you'll find some options with multiple beds or a villa with a separate bedroom and sofa beds, both accommodating up to four people. The villa has been completely updated and features a separate living area, a full kitchen, and a modern design with laminate wood flooring.

Other Highlights

You can enjoy your meals at the on-site restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus a pleasant (and long) happy hour from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The pool is a definite highlight, small but shaded by tall palm trees and complete with lounge chairs and an outdoor bar.

I'm a kimkim staff member, and I was on a work trip and stayed at this hotel. I loved the location of this hotel as it is a quick walk to the beach and many shops and restaurants. Tucked away in a little jungle oasis in the middle of the town, the hotel and pool are surrounded by lush vegetation/ trees. The breakfast had an a la carte menu with great selections. The a/c was powerful and kept the room cool on hot/humid days! I will definitely stay here again! Read more

I have really enjoyed my stay here. The room was renovated, clean and comfortable. The bed was big and mid-hard which I really like. I was quiet and comfortable. The street where it's located has a poor surface and lacks parking spots for everyone. There's also no sidewalk to walk to the ocean. But it's close to the supermarket, restaurants, and 5-7 min walk to the ocean. WiFi worked, but it has not been very reliable.
If you like to be in the middle of action - that's a good choice.

Authenticity & Character
They had live music events and the hotel is covered by trees. You can hear the howlers in the morning, which is very authentic to Costa Rica. I've enjoyed big portions for breakfast.
Location
I wish there was a sidewalk to the beach and there was a lot of dust on the road on dry days.
Staff
The owner was very welcoming and staff tried to help if I had questions.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Everything in the room and hotel looked clean.

Hotel Pasatiempo was a very good experience for the cost. The grounds and pool were amazing. The room was adequate, and the staff was very friendly. The breakfast burrito was incredible. The only downsides are Saturday night can be a bit loud (most of Tamarindo is if you're centrally located) and you need to bring bug spray as there can be days with a few mosquitoes. Read more

Amazing location, you are almost in the center of Tamarindo, and can pretty much walk everywhere. The hotel itself has some updated rooms, and some older rooms, see if you can get a room with the renovations. My only complaint is that. they need to spray the dinning area for bugs. You can't really lounge in the bar area without being eaten alive by the mosquitos. Read more

Giant mango tree in the courtyard that monkeys run over! The common areas is decorated with Guatil pottery, and they also serve breakfast with local pottery.
Location

We got to stay in the Villa. It was basically a one bedroom house with a full kitchen and living room and nice covered patio section. When we were escorted to the villa the sofa bed in the living room looked like it had been used and not cleaned and a coffee cup was in the sink. The hotel employee assisting us had somebody come and makeup the sofa while we were out at lunch. Not a huge deal but not a great first impression either. The shower water pressure was weak.

The property is full of trees and animals. We saw an Iguana, monkeys, squirrels, lizards and cats.
The breakfast was served a la carte and was delicious. The restaurant staff was very friendly.
The pool was simple but very relaxing. Live music sounded good too.
