Pros
  • If you want to pair learning to surf with your trip to Costa Rica, this hotel doubles as an excellent surf camp option for beginners.
  • The location is ideal for being close to the beach and downtown Tamarindo.
  • If you opt for a surf package, there are a few add-on perks, like breakfast included in the rate and extra equipment like rashguards.
  • Overall, the accommodations are comfortable, with good options for families and groups.
Cons
  • Nearly half the rooms are shared dorm options, so book a little early if you want a private unit.

Authenticity

Costa Rica is a big destination for surfing, and the beaches around Tamarindo and Guanacaste draw the crowds seeking big waves. It doesn't get more authentic than combining your stay with learning the country's sport, even if you're a beginner. Plus, the hotel offers an ideal location just across the street from the sand and surf.

Location

Iguana Surf Camp's location is right across the street from Tamarindo Beach and basically in the downtown area. A short stroll takes you to numerous restaurants, cafés, breweries, and shops. Keep in mind that to enter the hotel portion of the business, you must go upstairs and walk through a restaurant. If you'd like to visit other beaches or explore the area, you'll want a rental car or transfer, as places like Playa Grande are about 40 minutes away.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The hotel is very small, with only five room options, two being large dorm-style rooms with bunk beds. So if you'd like to book, we recommend planning your trip early so you can snag one of the three lofted suites. All offer a choice of one king bed or two twin beds, plus ocean views. Overall, the quality of the rooms is surprisingly nice, making this a comfy and excellent option for travelers wanting the entire surfing experience in Tamarindo.

Other Highlights

There's a lot to love about Tamarindo, but its surfing certainly draws the crowds. If you're staying at Iguana Surf Camp to learn the sport, we recommend choosing the surf package. It includes the room and breakfast, transfer from the airport in Liberia, daily surf lessons, use of a surfboard at any time during your stay, a rashguard to keep, and an excursion to a beach with bigger waves on your final day.
