Parque del Lago Boutique Hotel, San José

3.7 (15 reviews) · Standard
Basic hotel near San José's downtown with friendly staff, on-site restaurant, and an airport shuttle service

Overview

Just down the street from San José's largest municipal park, La Sabana, is Hotel Parque del Lago, a basic property that works well for budget travelers needing a no-frills overnight stay in the city. While the immediate surroundings are more suited to business travelers, guests are only a short cab ride away to downtown and a 30-minute free shuttle transfer to the airport. However, if there are plans to rent a car, the hotel is a decent option since it provides complimentary self-parking and is away from the busy streets of the city's historic core.

Pros
  • Although not in the city center, you'll be just one block from La Sabana Park and opposite the Costa Rican Art Museum.
  • Being out of the downtown area has one perk: easier driving—plus, the hotel offers free parking.
  • If you need a few simple staples, you don't have to leave the property, as Parque del Lago has a small convenience store.
  • Breakfast is included in your stay at the on-site Iconos restaurant, which serves Costa Rican dishes as well as typical Western fare.
  • Hotel Parque del Lago runs a complimentary shuttle service to and from Juan Santamaría International Airport.
Cons
  • This is a fairly simple hotel with basic, unimaginative decor and sparse rooms.
  • If you want to explore downtown San José, you'll need a car or taxi, though the drive is 5-10 minutes.

Authenticity

Hotel Parque del Lago is a basic hotel in San José's city center and doesn't provide much in the way of amenities or character. You can expect a standard hotel that works well for those with a low budget—or those simply needing a place to sleep before flying home or heading out into the country. Its restaurant does offer a menu that features a few traditional items, like casada de pollo.

Location

If you prefer to be away from San José's busy downtown core (helpful for drivers who want to avoid traffic), Parque del Lago makes up for it by being steps away from La Sabana Park. This large green space is the city's biggest park and provides walking paths, a pretty lake, and the Museum of Costa Rican Art. But to reach San José's main sites, such as the Gold and Jade museums and the National Museum, you'll need to drive or take a taxi (about 6-20 minutes depending on traffic). The surrounding area can feel a bit rough, particularly at night, with some deserted buildings nearby, but the hotel itself feels secure with locking gates and a fence.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The rooms are basic but clean, comfortable, and inviting. Some include kitchenettes, hardwood floors, complimentary breakfast,  and city views. The bathrooms are clean with standard amenities.

Amenities

Hotel Parque del Lago's main perk is its convenient location for drivers. If you have a rental car, you won't have to battle the downtown traffic, and the hotel provides plenty of free parking as well as EV chargers. Other amenities include a guest lobby with complimentary coffee from Café Britt (a popular Costa Rican coffee brand), free WiFi, an on-site convenience store, a modest fitness room, and the Iconos restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner options.

Very good place to be for the first and last night. A walk around the area was OK - the other end of Sabina Park would probably be better as behind this hotel were a lot of garages and opposite a very deserted building with broken glass etc.. The hotel itself lovely, good breakfast just situation could perhaps be better. BUT as we were hardly in San Jose we did not have the chance to get a good feel for the area really. Read more

Good over night, no more really.

As per review - it didn't seem totally great area to walk around at dark - however we were not here for long at all and as such were not able to grasp a real feel for the area.

I like the local, unique feel of this hotel. The room was basic but nice and clean. The typical Costa Rica breakfast was decent. The surrounding streets in the area were a bit rough and it is near a busy/loud road, though we didn't hear it at night and they have locking gates/fence all around so we felt safe. We had a view of the town and mountainous backdrop from our room. There was a causal and tasty restaurant within walking distance, also a bank to exchange local currnecy Read more

Cute little hotel for an overnight stay. Didn't get the opportunity to explore the area, so unable to report anything outside of rooms, receptions, and restaurant. Rooms were a little small for the amount of furniture in the room, but not a significant negative, just an opinion. Dinner in the restaurant was REALLY GOOD!! Read more

More of a hotel for business travelers. Didn’t have a swimming pool. But close to a nice park. Seemed understaffed. Staff had trouble keeping the breakfast bar stocked. If you needed tea - good luck getting hot water. Not enough seating. Just unimpressive. No pool.
We took a bus tour of the city - younger people could certainly just walk to attractions
