Quinta de la Rosa, Pinhão

4.7 (7 reviews) · Comfort
Historic family-run wine estate with traditional and modern rooms, a restaurant with panoramic views, and a pool

Overview

Enjoy a hospitable stay in the cozy Quinta de la Rosa just 10 minutes from the charming town of Pinhão. This family-run property has been with the same family since 1906 when it was given to the current owner's grandmother as a christening gift. So, the vibe is more one of rural tourism than a traditional hotel, geared toward those looking to experience life on a "quinta." Head to Pinhão to see its 19th-century train station covered in azulejos or blue-and-white decorative tiles. This small town is a 2.5-hour train ride from Porto, and the hotel is about a 1.5-hour drive from Porto and its airport.

The hotel has around 20 rooms, alternating between traditional and modern styles. The rooms in the original farmhouse have vintage Portuguese and English furniture that captures a historic feel. Other options are more modern with simple and contemporary design. Some have balconies overlooking the river, and while most have showers only, a handful also have bathtubs. The rooms are scattered across the property that's built into a steep hill, and the spaces are connected by steps, making this less suitable for those with limited mobility.

A highlight of the hotel is its small swimming pool, enclosed by its lush garden. Wine enthusiasts can embark on vineyard walks, take part in one of the regular wine and port tastings, and even help tread grapes during the harvest season. The modern-looking restaurant offers panoramic views of the river and valley, and you can indulge in its menu of tasty regional dishes and wine pairings. The common lounge and library are cozy places to curl up with a book or watch some TV since the rooms don't have TVs.

This was such a relaxing, luxurious experience. We had a room that overlooked the Douro river and the pool was always nicely warm from the sun. The restaurant had delicious food, and their coffee in the morning was my favorite from all the hotels on this trip.
The only complaint that we had was that it was difficult to sleep due to all the flies in our bedroom, and there weren't many outlets or surfaces for electronics (the bedside tables were quite small and had large bedside lamps on them).

The flies in our room were annoying, and the bed also wasn't as comfortable as at other hotels.

Stunning hotel! We would be very happy to stay there again. Our room was very recently refinished (it smelled like they had finished that morning) and had a couple of odd quirks. Namely the front door was abnormally short such that my husband had to duck to come in. And despite the room being HUGE, the bathroom didn't have a door on it which we found uncomfortable. Views were incredible, breakfasts were great. Read more
