Casa de São Domingos, Peso da Régua
Charming, family-owned Douro Valley retreat with garden views, saltwater pool, and complimentary breakfast
I'm a kimkim employee and stayed at Casa de São Domingos for a work trip. It's a charming, family-owned property about a 15-minute walk to the... Read more
Overview
Kimkim's Take
- You'll be staying in a prime location in Peso da Régua, perfectly placed to explore the numerous wineries and rich heritage of the Douro Valley.
- The family-owned property feels authentic and welcoming, with plenty of room to relax in the cozy lounge, on the sunny terrace, or around the saltwater pool.
- Rooms are elegantly furnished with traditional decor and antiques, and some include balconies and river, valley, and bridge views.
- A generous continental or buffet breakfast is served each morning in the dining room, with cooked dishes upon request.
- The property is located slightly uphill from the town, and some parts of the walk lack sidewalks.
- There's no elevator in the house, although there are only two floors.
- The front desk isn't open 24/7, but the hosts are accommodating and can help arrange to store luggage, etc.
Authenticity
The family-owned Casa de São Domingos exudes local charm and character, and you'll feel more like you're staying at the country home of friends than at a small boutique hotel. You'll be greeted warmly upon arrival, and if you're lucky, you might even get a visit from the family cat. Locally inspired decor and antiques give the interiors an authentic, homely feel, and the complimentary breakfast offers a perfect start to a day of Douro Valley explorations.
Location
Nestled just outside Peso da Régua, the property is within easy reach of town while feeling removed from the center. It's a 15-minute walk to the bustling riverfront street, José Vasques Osório, lined with enticing restaurants and local shops. Bear in mind that the walk back to the hotel is uphill along a major road, so portions lack a sidewalk and can feel a bit highway-like. The location is ideal for exploring the valley's wineries by car, and local highlights like the Douro Museum and Peso da Régua parish church are just a few minute's drive away. There's also free on-site parking, though spaces are limited.
Rooms & Bathrooms
Each of the 11 rooms at Casa de São Domingos is unique, furnished elegantly with wood floors, woven rugs, and antique bedframes and wardrobes. Bathrooms are spacious and well-equipped, with walk-in showers and Portuguese-style tilework. Many rooms offer views over the countryside toward the river, and some feature balconies or terraces (though they're separated by a short partition and you might occasionally see and hear your neighbors). Larger groups and families can opt for the Triple Room, which includes a queen and twin bed. All rooms include WiFi, tea and coffee-making trays, and air-conditioning.
Amenities
An outdoor saltwater pool forms a centerpiece of the property, surrounded by lovingly tended gardens and grounds. Indoors, there's a cozy shared lounge complete with plush sofas and low lighting, perfect for socializing with your hosts and other guests or enjoying a quiet moment with a book. A complimentary breakfast is served downstairs each morning, with continental buffet options and cooked dishes upon request.
Family-Friendliness
Casa de São Domingos welcomes families. There's plenty of room for little ones to play between the saltwater pool, gardens, and game room, and they'll find thoughtful extras like board games and puzzles to keep them occupied. Triple rooms feature one queen bed and one twin, and there are cribs and extra beds available for an added fee. Keep in mind that the walk back from town is uphill and on a busier road, so a rental car is recommended for families to get around conveniently.Like what you see?
